Most Influential HR Practitioner 2024 | KPMG Director Lead for Health Workforce | Prev NHS CEO & CPO | FCIPD | HPMA HR Director of the Year 2019
Does anyone else have a partner who works in the NHS and works their contractual hours, then comes home every night and does another 3 hours writing notes or researching conditions? Asking for a friend
@goodchild1
Delighted to be joining KPMG in November as Director of Workforce - I am looking forward to continuing to work with colleagues across Health & Care on their workforce challenges, and further develop the fantastic and innovative work KPMG already do in this space.
Just saw an interview with leader of the Labour Party where, when questioned why he was on holiday, he rightly said I have another important job - being a dad. Too many mums & dads are made to feel guilty for taking ‘family time’
To help inspire & break down perceptions,I’ve been collating career/life journeys of NHS leaders -today I can start sharing them with you! My book ‘how did I get here?’ shares these stories (p.s. no one received payment, and I make no income from the book; it’s just to inspire)
Can’t quite believe im in my final 2 days
@Medway_NHS_FT
thank you for the tea & cake gathering today. It was lovely to see so many colleagues come and say goodbye & share stories of the last 4.5 years together.
So proud of
@liznyawade1
being shortlisted for deputy HRD of the year
@HPMAAwards
- she is in great company too. Enjoy this moment Liz, you have earned this!
Simple analogy for today. You’ve been canoeing across the sea for over a year. You can finally see the beach and you’re getting excited. You don’t Chuck the paddle in the water and hope for the best - you keep paddling until you’re safely on land.

A bit quiet on here this week - our baby boy was born on Monday so enjoying these special moments. Thanks to the amazing team at kpmg for for allowing guilt free time off
@mallen1_nhs
And a very fond farewell to
@Medway_NHS_FT
thank you to every single member of the Medway family - these were my final words. It’s been an absolute privilege being your CEO, and you are in very safe hands under the leadership of
@GeorgeFindlay99
So today marks 25 years in the NHS for me. I look back with fond memories, pride and adoration for the lengths our colleagues go to care, directly & indirectly for the communities they serve! A few thank yous to those who have supported my journey so far!
Last day tomorrow with
@NHSConfed
I’ve had the absolute joy of working with amazingly talented people-I’ve learnt so much from them & much about myself. Thank you to the policy & regional engagement team;to the acute network advisory group;the brilliant comms and events teams 1/2
Great advice;
1.Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming
2.Slowly is the fastest way to get where you want to be
3.The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next. So keep climbing
Whatever happened to all the messages about just being kind to each other? The last 3 years have caused pain for so many people - let’s just be decent to each other and respect & embrace our differences.
When you get an out of office that shows such kindness, leadership & compassion, but yet you expected nothing less from them 😊

Well done to the entire team
@Medway_NHS_FT
on CQC report published today - a large part of the inspection took place in my final weeks as CEO. Lots to do as ever, but a positive report showing continued improvement. A credit to the fantastic staff, volunteers and community.
Looking forward to day 1 at
@kpmguk
@KPMGHealthcare
on Monday! Keen to continue my long standing relationships and work with like minded HR & OD professionals on the workforce challenges.

In my final few days
@Medway_NHS_FT
it was great to see the new staff gym near completion. Something staff had asked for since 2016 - I hope you get to enjoy it very soon.
Please do not confuse media reports of lower covid cases as an immediate sign of things getting better.There are still many patients in hospitals with covid, & the NHS is still under immense pressure.Please keep doing the things that keep us all safe

@NHSConfed
COVID-19 infections are soaring but there’s fewer hospital admissions, so what’s the problem for the NHS? Here’s a short thread on why small numbers can create big problems 1/15
So great catching up with
@LesleyDwyerCEO
this week - great to have her back in the NHS. Too busy catching up we forgot to take a pic, so here’s one from the old days :)
Buying a new front door. Good conversation;style agreed;price agreed;timescale agreed & nice comments about our new home. He says,’so it’s Mr & Mrs……’ I say ‘Mr & Mr Devine’. He hurriedly finishes taking details & we never hear from him again despite my calls/email. So sad.
In a world that can be cruel at times, hearing 2 friends receive fantastic news this week about things they only ever dreamed about has made me feel so happy and believe that we must enjoy the special moments more
I can certainly resonate with this. This is the most honest, humble story I’ve read in a long time. Thank you to these CEOs for showing true leadership - vulnerability and authenticity

Where is workforce in the list of SoS immediate priorities? I sound like a broken record I’m sure, but I think we are either understating, or ignoring the obvious workforce challenges over the coming months, and years.
I think the message is fairly simple. If we want to get back to normality, without any current or future restrictions, we have got to protect our NHS over the winter, and protect each other.

Referee Anthony Taylor took just seconds to react to Christian Eriksen's fall and called the medical team on instantly.
One of the many heroes on the pitch tonight 👏

1/2 Lots of discussion about the merit of
#InternationalHRDay
- I know countless HR colleagues who care passionately about what they do, how they support safe & effective care of our patients, and our colleagues. They are a credit to the profession and deserve the recognition!
The need to think more creatively & strategically on workforce planning is now. Turnover is only better due to the pandemic and people not moving and vacancies (published by NHS digital) show a worsening position, particularly in nursing in acute & MH.
10 weeks in at
@NHSConfed
& grateful for for the support! New acute network set up ✅ advisory group launched ✅ new web page ✅ blogs ✅ webinars ✅ round table events ✅ member views represented with positive outcomes ✅ collab working with other Confed networks✅

Great seeing
@liznyawade1
surprised face when friends gathered
@SaraTurle
- but equally lovely was the random stranger who congratulated Liz, told her she looked like a kind person, and how she loved seeing the look on her face as she opened gifts

@LucyStn
We used to have a ‘cup of coffee’ conversation to provide feedback either directly or via someone else. You’re not unprofessional - it’s unprofessional (and wrong) to think it’s okay to be rude & condescending to colleagues.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback about my book of fifteen career/life journeys - it’s the inspiring stories and vulnerability of the amazing leaders that make it so special - plus the advice to their 16 year old self - I enjoyed reading those!
Coaching/mentoring lots this week.
Why do we believe that by a certain age, we should have achieved certain things, or compare ourselves to others and then feel inferior. One thing they was said to me years ago - ‘be where you are, not where you think you should be’
Why do people set up anon Twitter accounts just to send nasty messages to people? Then delete them? I really love the benefits of social media, but nothing makes you want to delete your own account than when someone messages you a barrage of nasty messages for no reason

What a year for HR & OD ! Tonight’s it’s the
@HPMAAwards
! I’ve had the honour of winning a team award with

and an individual, and they have been highlights of my career. Good luck to everyone, you are amazing! Be proud!
Congratulations to
@AKPritchard2
on her appointment to CEO. On behalf of us all at
@NHSConfed
, huge congrats, and we look forward to working with you. Amanda is a hugely credible, compassionate and authentic leader.
As a previous NHS CEO and HR Director, I can genuinely say transactional HR automation is a game changer and must be a priority for most health & care organisations,including ICS’. We are showing significant improvements and in year return on investment. Get in touch to hear more
We will continue to represent the views of NHS leaders on mandatory face masks in healthcare settings.We cannot forget that covid is still here,and hospital acquired infections can have devastating consequences for patients and a community.Let’s do the things that have helped us
Todays mood - I think I can’t believe it’s 2 months since our little boy arrived in the world. Then I look at the bags under my eyes and realise it’s certainly been 2 months ….
Today, the amazing Justine Wood goes on maternity leave! She has been by my side as CEO from day 1. Everyone thought we were crazy in 2018 when we agreed she would work full time, but only 1 day in the office - but it worked, quite simply because she is amazing
@Medway_NHS_FT
Hello! I hope you have a great Christmas! Thank you for sharing great content, for interacting with my posts, for your messages of support in high & low times - and to those special people, for always listening with fascination (my favourite ever piece of advice
@WestM61
Couldn’t agree more Michael. I’ve spoken to a number of HR professionals this week - compassion, empathy, integrity and commitment are words that come to mind - plus a genuine drive to keep improving the employee experience; valued staff = safe care
Happy AHP Day! I’m married to one and see everyday his commitment, empathy, resilience, dedication and constant desire to learn more to improve care for patients - proud of you

and my brother in law too!
