New buildings are used for c.70-100 years, while clinical practice, standards and risk change far more frequently. Adapting existing buildings is challenging – but Andrew Poplett’s @IPS_Infection ECD ventilation strategies & management of derogations talk tackled this very topic.

A thought provoking presentation from Dr Mike Weinbren at the @IPS_Infection ECD conference - highlighting the importance of identifying risk in design, the need for systematic learning in healthcare construction…ultimately preventing infections at source is far more effective!

Considering the end-to-end pathway from admission to discharge is a great way to bring this year’s conference to a close. @drmarkgarvey is our final speaker – summarising a number of the essential topics discussed today – water, air, environment, disinfection and more. #IPSECD

Air is a major part of our environment and healthcare design. Although not a new concept, air cleaning has grown in prominence since Covid-19. @CathNoakes suggests considering the disease, transmission route, who is at risk and where when determining the best solution. #IPSECD

Using a scientific approach, involving risk assessments, to choosing the right disinfecting products. Could other, newer chemistries provide alternatives to bleach - reducing the impact on staff & patients, without degrading surfaces? A great challenge from @tgauci1 #IPSECD

Where to start when considering the development of a hospital environment… ‘It may seem a strange principle to enunciate as the very first requirement in a hospital that it do the sick no harm’ - Florence Nightingale, 1859. A fantastic reflection from Dr David Jenkins.

The impact on our carbon footprint from the pandemic has been enormous. Driving the right behaviours and practice will be essential if we’re to deliver against Net Zero targets. @SustainableHLB presentation is really timely with some great practical solutions for Trusts.
