This. The worst thing. We receive more great stories than we have room to publish, and some of them just don't quite fit or don't quite work for us so we have to pass. Then we watch the other magazines, hoping to see them appear somewhere, and when they don't... ☹️

@fandsf It is also sad to actually publish a great book that never gets the attention it deserves.

This is why when writers ask for writing advice so many editors just say "Read our magazine." Some authors understand immediately why editors say that and start to study while others complain that they weren't given any useful advice.

Happy belated birthday also to Ben Bova, who published many stories in F&SF, most famously perhaps "Inspiration" (F&SF, Apr 1994), which was a Nebula finalist, and of course several stories in his Sam Gunn space entrepreneur series beginning with "Sam Gunn" (F&SF, Oct 1983).

Yesterday Ben Bova turned 87. His most recent novel, EARTH, was published earlier this year. I've reviewed an earlier novel, THE PRECIPICE, plus a few short stories (including his first two):

Ferdinand Feghoot stopped by the F&SF editorial offices in Surprise AZ to show us some pictures of a Game of Thrones cosplay created by two college kids who made their Arya and Brienne costumes completely out of stuff from their campus apartment. It was a Stark and dormy knight.

Carol Emshwiller appeared as a writer in many issues of F&SF and on the cover of many issues as a model for her husband, the artist Ed Emshwiller, or Emsh. If you don't know her work, it's worth tracking down. We're going to RT a variety of links about her, just because.

"Flowers for Algernon" originally appeared in the April 1959 F&SF. Other editors wanted him to rewrite it to give Charley a happy ending and a romance but F&SF's editor Robert Mills liked it as written. Keyes also published the well-regard and much-reprinted "Crazy Maro" in F&SF.
