We are sad to note the passing of Kate Wilhelm (1928-2018), writer, teacher, and leader, a giant in the field. Her first F&SF story was "A Time to Keep" (Jan, 1962). Her most recent was "Attachments" (Nov/Dec, 2017). She will be missed.

We're seeing a lot of end-of-the-world and COVID-19 stories in the F&SF submission queue right now. (Prolly just a coincidence.) Missing in so many of those stories are surprising moments of community and grace like this. (

My block takes the 7PM applause for essential workers super seriously. Here's my incredible hero husband heading out to an overnight shift at a hotel where homeless folks with COVID-19 have been put up, while neighbors 4 stories up bang pots in gratitude.

F&SF published 63 stories in 2018 (3 novellas, 21 novelets, 39 shorts). 22 (more than a third) were by writers making their 1st appearance in F&SF. 5 were by writers making their first pro genre sale. It could've been 6 if we were just a bit quicker to buy

Subscriptions help us now more than ever. Anywhere from a quarter to half of the sales for paper copies of any issue of the magazine occur through bookstores -- we're not seeing those right now due to the shutdown. New subscriptions will help us get through this.

We're sad to see that
@ShimmerStories
is closing after 13 years of enriching readers. F&SF shared some writers with Shimmer but we also appreciated that Shimmer had its own voice and perspective. A rich diversity of magazines makes the genre better; Shimmer has been part of that.

Many stories we published were rejected elsewhere first. Many of the stories we reject get published elsewhere. Like

(who has a new story coming in our Mar/Apr issue) says: "Right desk, right day, right story, write better. It never stops being true."

This is a reprint of a story first published in F&SF, which had been submitted 21 times before finally being published. It is ALSO the first story I've managed to sell to this particular set of reprint anthologies.

It's always a good day to remember Clifford Simak, a journalist with the Minneapolis Star who also wrote frequently pastoral sf. He published half a dozen novellas and some short stories in F&SF from the 1950s-'70s. "The Autumn Land" (F&SF, Oct 1971) was a Hugo finalist.
Today is the 115th anniversary of Clifford D. Simak's birth. I've put together a collection of reviews of stuff by him I read in old magazines, including "Time Quarry" (aka TIME AND AGAIN), which was serialized in the first three issues of Galaxy.

This. The worst thing. We receive more great stories than we have room to publish, and some of them just don't quite fit or don't quite work for us so we have to pass. Then we watch the other magazines, hoping to see them appear somewhere, and when they don't... ☹️

Another truth about publishing. Sometimes we publish a story and it gets almost no comments or reactions from readers, and we're like "WHY WHY CAN'T YOU SEE THIS IS A GEM PEOPLE LOVE IT GIVE IT ALL THE AWARDS."

This is why when writers ask for writing advice so many editors just say "Read our magazine." Some authors understand immediately why editors say that and start to study while others complain that they weren't given any useful advice.
I've learned more from reading successful authors than I have by perusing Thou-Shalt-Not lists.

Happy belated birthday also to Ben Bova, who published many stories in F&SF, most famously perhaps "Inspiration" (F&SF, Apr 1994), which was a Nebula finalist, and of course several stories in his Sam Gunn space entrepreneur series beginning with "Sam Gunn" (F&SF, Oct 1983).

"Flowers for Algernon" originally appeared in the April 1959 F&SF. Other editors wanted him to rewrite it to give Charley a happy ending and a romance but F&SF's editor Robert Mills liked it as written. Keyes also published the well-regard and much-reprinted "Crazy Maro" in F&SF.

Fritz Leiber published 30 stories in F&SF during the 1950-80s and was a book reviewer for us during the 1960s. He won the Hugo for "Ship of Shadows" (F&SF, Jul '69), and both the Hugo and Nebula for "Ill Met in Lankhmar" (F&SF, Apr '70) and "Catch That Zeppelin!" (F&SF, Mar '75).
