This Hemicorallium colony, a genus of pink #corals belonging to the family #Coralliidae, was spotted by our #CorpsofExploration in the Central Pacific with a #basketstar, #Gorgonocephalidae on top, which relies on passing currents for food like small crustaceans and plankton.

#DidYouKnow: The Volkswagen beetle-sized #ROVHercules is built to withstand pressures at a depth of 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) with more than 6,000 pounds per square inch (psi) of force. That’s about 2.5 miles deep!

The rounded, bubbly shapes of these pillow lavas are a clue of quickly cooling rock that formed shortly after erupting underwater. #Pillowlava formation is visible today at #Kama’ehaukanaloa (formerly known as #Lō'ihiSeamount), southwest of the big island of #Hawaii.
