You may know me as The Bear. Now at
@FOXSports
. Let's talk - and bet - College Football, NFL, Horses, Soccer, MLB, Tennis, Golf and CBB. Love to Travel.
If TCU had an Oklahoma or Texas logo on its helmet, there would be ZERO doubt it was in - win or lose today - after a 12-0 regular season which included nine conference games. This talk of two-loss Bama jumping them with a loss is pure nonsense.
Saturday is the 2nd time in CFB history there are three matchups of teams 5-0 or better on the same day - 5-0 Penn State at 6-0 Michigan, 6-0 Alabama at 5-0 Tennessee and 5-0 Oklahoma State at 5-0 TCU...
I don't know what's going to happen in 2nd half in Atlanta. But all I know is if Alabama wins, you can't take Bama over Texas. Both 12-1, both conf champs, Texas won by 10 at Bama. You can take both, you can take Texas over Bama but not Bama over Texas...
There have been many motivational speeches in the history of this great sport, but I believe
@BarstoolBigCat
"I cant control my thumbs they are fat and they suck" speech prior to the game-winning/national championship drive will go down near the top of that list.
Congrats
@CycloneFB
on a special season. A lot of people dismissed you guys after a season-opening loss to what turned out to be a pretty good team. Stuck with it, swept OU/TX in reg season and while came up just short in Big 12 title game, impressed everyone in Fiesta Bowl win.
What if Brian Ferentz has been playing chess while we’re playing checkers all season? Imagine if Iowa comes out in shotgun, four wideouts and just slings it all over tonight. He who laughs last....
With the loss to FIU, Miami becomes the only team in the last 40 years to lose three times as a 14-point favorite in a single season. Canes lost to VT as 14-pt fave, GT as 18.5-pt fave and tonight to FIU as 21-pt fave. Canes also won 17-12 as a 30.5-pt fave vs Central Michigan.
3-8 Nebraska is currently a one-point favorite over 9-2 Iowa. It is the first time since at least 1978 - and I’m fairly confident to say ever - that a team 3-8 or worse is favored over a team 9-2 or better...
Top W-L record since 2017, Entering Today
Clemson 51-4 .927
Alabama 49-4 .925
Ohio State 44-4 .917
Notre Dame 43-7 .860
Notre Dame doesnt have to apologize to anyone. So they cant beat Alabama or Clemson in the CFP. Not many can.
Since playing for the 2009 national title, Alabama is an FBS best 151-17 and has won five national titles. Texas is 84-67, which is one win better than Northwestern. In fact, Alabama has more wins by at least 24 points - 92 - than Texas has wins in that span.
There have been 21 CFP games. 17 have been won by Alabama, Clemson or Ohio State. Expanding the playoff, which I haven't been a fan of, will not give us more title contenders, but it might be necessary to create more excitement among fan bases currently not in the CFP.
Ohio State has had eight DB selected in the 1st round since 2014 - Okudah, Arnette, Ward, Lattimore, Hooker, Conley, Apple, Roby. Nobody else has more than three in that span.
Power 5 QB with the lowest QBR this season
Spencer Petras, Iowa 3.4
JT Shrout, Colorado 13.8
Haynes King, Texas A&M 33.1
Adrian Martinez, K-State 34.0
Brennan Armstrong, Virginia 35.0
@KySportsRadio
And last year Bryce Young and Will Anderson played in the "meaningless" bowl game, which they blew out K State. There's a reason Bama and Georgia are in playoff almost every year. Great players and great culture is one helluva combo
Miami's 14-0 loss to Louisiana Tech marks the only time in the last 40 years a team from a Power conference (I'm including Big East, Big 8, SWC in that group) was shut out by a team from a non-Power conference in a bowl game.
So not only did Tennessee not get a No. 2 seed, it gets a three-seed and would potentially have to beat Arizona again to get to the Final Four. Bad job by the committee.
Since the start of the 2022 season, there have been 28 losses by a home favorite of at least 16 points in CFB.
Notre Dame has accounted for three of them.
No dog in the fight, thought that was a bad reversal. Thought by time WR had control of ball, he was sitting on the goal line. Turned out to be huge call.
Weeks Ranked in Top 10 Since 2010
Texas A&M 47
TCU 47
Baylor 40
Michigan St 40
Boise St 32
Oklahoma St 32
Washington 31
South Carolina 22
Nebraska 19
Arkansas 16
Texas 14
That win tonight for
@BarstoolBigCat
felt a lot like what another Ohio sports legend, LeBron James delivered. Got his start at Toledo, won first title elsewhere, came home to Ohio and delivered a title to a starved fanbase.
BREAKING: While the goal is for Tennessee's JoJo Smalls (ankle) to start today at Toledo, the main objective is to keep his workload to a minimum today and have him at 100% for next week's home game with Georgia. How it plays out depends on
@BarstoolBigCat
If Oregon plays an easier opener than Auburn, its 11-1 entering tonight and ranked 5-6-7. Instead it played Auburn, lost close game, now 11-2 instead of 12-1 and have no CFP hopes. At 12-1 they would be in mix for a spot. Risk of the loss outweighs all. And that stinks.
Last night I was at a classic national championship game. Now Im in Augusta. In two weeks Ill be back with my GameDay crew at the Draft. 16-yo Bear wouldnt believe the things he would get to see/do in the future. Immensely grateful to work and see the events my job brings me to.
The now 11 P5 schools from which GameDay has not broadcast a show, ranked in order of odds on who I think will be the next first-timer to host a show.
Iowa State
Minnesota
Maryland
Duke
Virginia
Wake Forest
Cal
Syracuse
Illinois
Kansas
Rutgers
Barring any unforeseen changes in the AP Poll, next weeks Penn State/Iowa game will be the first regular season Big Ten game between two Top 5 opponents without Ohio State being one of them since 1997 Michigan at Penn State.
Jayden Daniels only leads the nation in total offense by 57 YPG at 408.2, which is more than 80 teams average this season. He’s accounted for 38 TD, which is more than 81 teams have scored. I mean, what are we doing if he doesn’t win the Heisman?
With
@CollegeGameDay
headed to Minnesota next week, there will be only 9 Power 5 schools from which the show has not originated - Syracuse, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, Kansas, Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois and Cal.
Tonight’s 37-point win over Auburn is Tennessee’s first SEC win by at least 21 points since 2016 vs Missouri, 28 SEC games ago. The 37-point win is the Vols biggest SEC win since a 52-14 win over Ole Miss in 2010.
@BarstoolBigCat
First it was Brock Purdy's first start, then it was his first road start, then it was yeah, but those weren't playoff teams to end the regular season, then it was first playoff game. Now its the Cowboys are the first 10+ win/"real" team he's faced...
Big 12 season awards just came out. Iowa State won most of 'em.
OPOY: Breece Hall
DPOY: Mike Rose
Coach of the Year: Matt Campbell
Off. Newcomer: Xavier Hutchinson, ISU
Def. Newcomer: Tony Fields II, WVU
Off. Freshman: Deuce Vaughn, KSU
Def. Freshman: Young, ISU/Coleman, TCU
What if Brian Ferentz has been playing chess while we’re playing checkers all season? Imagine if Iowa comes out in shotgun, four wideouts and just slings it all over tonight. He who laughs last....
Miami won by 33 pts, committed 1 penalty, forced 4 TO, held No. 3 team to under 275 yards. Since 2004 only 1 other team has beaten a Power 5 opp by 30, held it under 275 yds forced 4 TO and committed 1 penalty - Ole Miss vs a 3-3 Tennessee team in 2014.
The current gap between the Top 3 and No. 4 in recent years is big. It didn't matter who was No. 4 today, Alabama was going to win convincingly. And yes, Notre Dame should have been No. 4.
Saturday will be Alabama's 164th game since the start of the 2011 season. It will be the first time the Tide are playing a regular season game without having a chance to win the national title...
In its bowl game, Alabama will play its 167th game since the start of 2008. It will be just the 7th time the Tide take the field without a chance of winning the national championship.
One of the greatest runs in college football history is over. Nick Saban informed his team today that he's retiring, sources tell ESPN. He won six national championships at Alabama and one at LSU.
Seed to reach Final Four from Virginia's region last 5 years. Craziness.
2014 7 Connecticut
2015 7 Michigan State
2016 10 Syracuse
2017 7 South Carolina
2018 11 Loyola Chicago
Michigan is a machine. Played one bad game all year. Had every reason in the world to be flat today off games vs Iowa and Ohio State and with Illinois up next. Nope. Steamrolled IU. Whatever Juwan Howard and Phil Martelli are doing... just keep doing it.
Couldn't be happier for Jalen Hurts. Didn't transfer. Was a good teammate. Got better. Got his chance. And now will go down forever in the annals of Alabama football history.
I don't have a Heisman vote, but if I did, it would go to
@Trevorlawrencee
. If the award is supposed to go to the most outstanding player, I don’t think anyone fits that description better than him…
@BarstoolBigCat
This is why you work 20 hour days during the season. This is why you sit up at 3:30 am with the clicker in your hand watching one play over and over looking for one small advantage. This is why all those donuts met their final resting place. For tonight.
One really can’t draw conclusions from bowl results, because there are so many circumstances in each game. But the Big 12 going 5-0 after seeing their defenses get torched in recent years is a good feat. OU, ISU, OK ST and WVU all have legit Ds
Yep, Miami’s final three games were losses to FIU, to a Duke team which had lost 5 straight entering the game and a shutout at the hands of Louisiana Tech in the bowl game. Just needed to double check that.
Genuinely happy for
@ISUMattCampbell
and
@CycloneFB
Been so close to so many big wins but just came up short. This year, 4th quarter comebacks to knock off ranked Oklahoma and Texas teams and appear headed to their first Big 12 Championship Game.
BYU at Coastal Carolina will be the 6th Pre-Bowl December meeting between two undefeated teams. The others:
2009 SEC Title Game - Alabama vs Florida
1969 Texas vs Arkansas
1947 Notre Dame vs USC
1945 Army vs Navy
1939 USC vs UCLA
Iowa State has been ranked 26 weeks since 2017, including four weeks in the Top 10. From 1936 to 2016, Iowa State was ranked just 40 weeks and only once in the Top 10. Three of Iowa State's four all-time preseason rankings have come in the last three years.
There have been ten instances this season of a team favored by greater than 16 points losing at home. Notre Dame is the only team to have it happen twice.
