With 250 million known protein sequences, and poentially billions more in the next few years with initiatives like @EBPgenome, an abundance of data opens the door to applying the approach on an unprecedented scale and revealing life's ancient history.

The work, led by @cnotred, can help build more reliable evolutionary trees, a critical resource used by the scientific community for understanding the history of life, monitor the spread of pathogens or create new treatments for disease.

CRG researchers have merged genomic and structural data to tackle saturation, the main obstacle for the reconstruction of ancient relationships. Crucially, the approach works even with the predicted structures of proteins that have never been experimentally determined.
