It’s great to cold email an organization that impresses you and ask about a job. It’s a long shot, but amazing for both parties when it works. If you do, then part of your task in the email is to show that you can be good at the job. "I'm a big fan" isn't enough. If the organization impresses you, then they're probably impressing a bunch of people and you're trying to stand out from a pool of good applicants. (Unless you have excellent taste and are getting in early before it's well known, which is one reason that spotting things early is so powerful, but that's a different topic.)

The smallest coin the US ever bothered to mint was the half-cent. When it was discontinued in 1857, half a cent was worth somewhat more than a quarter is worth today, and that was for a much much poorer country. Inflation has made all of our coins pointless.

@eshear If my mom died and the funeral was scheduled for Monday then I'd make it to *that*, so clearly there's a sense in which I *can* make it. Nevertheless no one is confused. I do use "I can make Monday work if necessary but I'd prefer Wednesday if it's convenient" sometimes.

Any successful plan to reform the universities will involve dozens of decade-long jail sentences and thousands of firings, at a bare minimum. I doubt anyone has the stomach for that. Burn it down, carry forward the project of the Enlightenment somewhere else.
