I've told this story before... but here it goes again.
I have been into tabletop games since 1994 - which relative to many of my peers today - is a long dang time. When I got into the hobby, I was young and basically the only girl and often the only non-white person playing.
Anyway. I'm keeping my seat at this table.
Board gaming should be inclusive, safe, and fun. I'll do whatever I can to help that evolution continue. And I appreciate everyone who is doing what they can to help that progress.
An Asian girlfriend, Black best friend, or non-white adopted children do not give white folks a racism pass nor do they inherently imbue a deeper understanding of or authority over the experiences of non-white people in this country.
I honestly never thought it'd happen, but the police are taking action against a person who's been harassing me (and others), charges are filed, and online restrictions are in place. The relief I feel is... immense.
FWIW, after I had saved up I realized I wanted a coffee table/gaming table and while I thought Wyrmwood tables looked lush - they didn't offer one. I ended up with a
@rathskellers
table and effing love it. The quality, customization, customer care, etc has been phenomenal.
I won’t retweet his horseshit take… but any man who says “don’t do business with people who don’t drink booze” is incredibly ignorant. Just another example of an industry insider who works hard to keep it locked down to the exclusionary AND DANGEROUS status quo.
Fuck that.
Who's Vaccinated?
95% of US physicians
Nearly 100% of US Senators
100% of Republican Governors
100% of Democrat Governors
100% of living US Presidents
Who's not vaccinated?
Over 95% of people recently admitted to the hospital for Covid symptoms or who've died of Covid
So I put myself in front of a laptop camera, clenched my hands out of frame, and recorded.
I am blatantly non white. I am blatantly not male. And I was blatantly claiming a space, asserting my opinions, and trying to show - hey... board games aren't just white dudes.
Board game rule books are SO much easier to read if you already have a general sense of the game play and game flow. I find 3rd party content (overviews/summaries/video/podcasts) to be super valuable tools in helping me consume rule books. Thanks to everyone making that goodness.
My 10yo wants me to share, with my “internet friends,” the posters she’s designing for her school about the importance of kindness and the value of friendship.
So here you go, friends!
Board gamers: Quit whining about Black slavery in games! It’s historically accurate!
Also board gamers: Black cowboys in my Wild West game? Quit pandering to the PC SJW police.
“Historical accuracy”
Love the shirt but I wore it to Costco today and had this convo with a stranger, no joke.
🧔🏻: Great shirt! Do you know what it means?
👩🏻: ................. yes.
If you come to my house to provide a service and you express even a passing interest in the board games that fill my home… you are not leaving without at least one new board game. Nope. Not possible.
(Today the plumber left with NMBR9 and Kingdomino.)
Did I get to go on
@HISTORY
and talk about board games?
HECK YES.
Did I get to talk about the original
#RollAndWrite
, Yahtzee?!
HEEEEECK YEEEES!!!
There are at least 3 eps of
#ToysThatBuiltAmerica
dedicated to
#BoardGames
this season
This one covers Clue, Yahtzee, Scrabble!
I definitely know being able to afford a very nice gaming table is a huge privilege… but to be fair - gaming is a huge part of my life and I’d been saving up for it for awhile. The table is a big deal for me so apologies if I talk about it a bit. I’m just so happy about it.
All this to say...
When you see someone trying to make space for themselves in this hobby... especially a someone from a demographic traditionally marginalized here.
And your reaction is to mock them based on their gender or sexuality ... rethink that.
Really hope
@Gen_Con
moves out of Indiana when this contract runs out (hey - they can move, they've done it before.) Feels gross to be pouring money into a state that strips away healthcare from people.
The stories I could tell about being young, Asian, female, and into games in a crowd of men are 50/50 split between fun and deeply unpleasant. Deeply. It's a big reason why I advocate so strongly for anti-harassment and safety in gaming. But I loved games. I wasn't run off.
For the health of the growth of board games and the safety of those in the community - I strongly believe keeping ga mer ga te out of board games is absolutely critical.
It's the movement so awful I don't even want to write the term in full because.. been there, done that.
Soooooo... there's a game on
@Kickstarter
(being run by the publisher who just threatened to "make me a good time") who's got a frog throwing the wh*te p*wer symbol on the rulebook cover. Just awful
If you don't get the symbology being used here, you've missed the last 5 years.
Worked since I was 15... 2 jobs in college... tears and sweat to be without student loan debt.
It’s not my fault others can’t shed their debt like me!
And you want to let people off the hook for their student loan debt when I had to work for it?!
Cool! Sounds good to me. 💯
I’m still doing the thing*. I don’t post a ton about it cuz no one wants to see that.
But today I’m sharing because I hit 5k for the first time in… 14? 15? years.
*the thing is running**
** I really don’t enjoy doing the thing
I admit it... I’m thinking about all the people who’ve ragged on my love for digital board games over the years.
“Keep your digital out of my board games.”
Technology was never the enemy of analog gaming. I guess it’s nice to see more people realizing that.
Keep G amer Ga te out of board games.
This means not supporting individuals (and their contributions to board gaming) who are proponents of that hate movement. No contracts, no paid content, no social promotion, no partnership. Not for them. Not ever.
Happy Valentines Day.
I’m am severely displeased with this decision. We have zero indications that unvaccinated people will commit to wearing masks in this country. And with the highly contagious variants spreading this seems like remarkably short sided choice and ill timed announcement.
Another health & safety update! With our surveys showing 87% of attendees vaccinated, we are dropping mask requirements for vaccinated attendees while requiring masks for unvaccinated attendees, and changing exhibit hall entry. Read the full update here:
Eric called out a group of notorious dogpilers and then those dogpilers screamed with faux outrage "HOW DARE" and then proceed to dogpile and then brigade reports to get Eric's account shut down. It's almost like Eric was 100% correct about them.
Eric M. Lang is a great asset to the tabletop game community, and it's horribly wrong that his Twitter account has been suspended due to harassment and phony reports of account violations.
Any femme who’s been groped, hit on, slobbered on, assaulted, or drugged at an industry event will tell you how much absolute bullshit “don’t drink? you’re hiding something” is.
Flip the script! What’s the agenda of a man who enforces social alcohol consumption as work req?
I like
#RollAndWrite
games. A lot. (In fact, I even helped seal the term in hobby games the way it's used today.) I've bought and played a TON of these games from all around the world.
I love everything about Roll and Write games - except...
I played a board game with my next door neighbors last night. I just... walked out of my house, took 10 steps, walked into their house, and we played a board game. It's the board gamers dream!
But then I kind of crushed them. 😳 I didn't mean to!
I hope I get invited back.
Day 1/30 of school closure:
🧦7yo “tried on” every single sock he has
🌶11yo snuck Takis and got sick
🔌7yo broke the laptop power supply
🐶11yo destroyed a dog toy cuz “I dunno”
🍓🥭11yo left exactly 2 cubes of frozen mango and 2 frozen strawberries on the floor
Day ONE
🤦🏻♀️
It’s been almost 2 months since I quit my soul-killing job in advertising... and I’m still not used to spending my Sunday nights dread-free.
I cannot believe how much time & energy I’ve wasted on Sundays... precious time squandered on miserably being a cog in a shit machine.
Unsolicited advice for folks wanting to start making tabletop content - come in warm, not hot.
Warm - excited, friendly, interested, engaging with the community at large, gain industry knowledge.
Hot - demanding, entitled, click baity, controversy for clout chasing, etc
It's ok for people to not like board games.
They can just not like them for whatever reason and we, as board game fans, can just go "that's cool - want to watch a movie instead?"
My heart is full…
@613mandi
and I finally laid down Ep 1 of the new
@SaltNSassGames
tabletop games podcast. It felt good (albeit a bit surreal) to be recording again. So excited to unleash this into the community (soon-ish).
I promise you - board game publishers are not juicing the shipping fees to make a profit.
Shipping fees - especially when you're shipping between different countries (let alone continents) - are VERY EXPENSIVE.
No one likes the costs, but they're a reality.
Board gaming... tabletop gaming... can never be safe as long as you keep inviting harassers to the table, accept their -isms as "the other side of the coin", and act like a shared love of gaming is enough to make a positive community.
I am all for board gaming's new or revived interest in finding ways to make the industry safer and more inclusive. But I will tell you right now that I am skeptical of any solution that does not actively involve women of color in crafting said solutions.
When you punch out a game, do you create player packs from the get go?
I read the component list and setup and do my best to sort it and bag it up for player ease (even before I read the rules.)

#NowOrNever
Sigh
Y'all.
"Dudes" and "Guys" are GENDERED TERMS.
They are not gender neutral.
They are male terms that have become (as male terms often are) the default for a mixed gender generalized term.
Please do not argue with me that "Dudes" is neutral.
As convention season kicks into high gear with Origins – a reminder regarding booth staff and awareness. Many don’t want to face the fact that harassment exists in analog gaming. But it does. And you may be surprised how much of it happens right in front of you.
One of the most rewarding things I hear from folks is that my presence in content helped them. Occasionally I hear that I helped someone feel like they could make content too. Sometimes I hear I helped make someone feel less alone or acknowledged. And wow. My heart.

💗
You know what? Don't tell me to lighten up.
Don't tell me to ease up on the negativity or criticism.
How about you recognize the persistent obvious problematic imbalances in the industry and help? Get your head out of the sand and do something. But don't tell me to lighten up.
Seen some folks fret about what to do with their Wyrmwood products now. Look - you cannot unspend that money but you can choose what company you support with dollars and promotion (ie social media) armed with new unfortunate info.
I used to keep a blog for longer form thoughts. Here's something I wrote in 2017 after an "incident" in the board game podcaster world.
Long thread. It was an article. I feel compelled to post it again now.
Gaming cannot become safer & more inclusive with silence.
#1
commitment gamers need to make to improve gaming?
HOLD EACH OTHER ACCOUNTABLE.
Don't let crappy comments/jokes go unchallenged & for gosh sake - SUPPORT WOMEN SPEAKING OUT.
I appreciate all the lovely things folks are writing. I'm not ignoring them... but I'll be honest - I'm kind of grieving so am just... not interacting with them right now.
Mandi and I will be continuing on with content and hope to have your support in the future with that.
With the news that the Dice Tower podcast is ending, I wanted to thank
@425suzanne
&
@boardgamerpinup
for their contributions to the show. You gave it new life, valuable insights & pure joy—I can’t wait to see what y’all do next! Other folx: reply to show Mandi & Suz some love!
Welp. I just got tagged to a bunch of alt-right outlets so... I'm going private again.
I'm also reviewing my new followers later so...sorry if you're awesome and get swept up in that.
I need to start a Discord for board gaming parents so we can set up virtual game nights with each other and where everyone understands when every night we all apologize profusely to each other for backing out because the day was incandescently exhausting.
I just need to say that my podcast partner and friend,
@boardgamerpinup
, is an amazing woman. Board gaming is lucky to have her playing games, talking games, and also embodying the spirit of
#InclusiveGaming
. I'm honored to know her.
But the KEY REASON for me starting in content was to represent the fact that people like me existed in the hobby. We loved games too! And being a disembodied VO over app game capture video wouldn't be effective to achieve my purpose.
TO REPRESENT I HAD TO BE VISIBLE
7YO: Most people die around 200
ME (FROM OTHER ROOM HALF PAYING ATTENTION): not really, most people die between 60 and 90.
7YO: ... in Super Smash Bros?
ME: 😶
7YO: Mama, how old is Grandpa?!
Thank you to folks who are being exceptionally kind to me right now. I appreciate you. I don't know if I express the joy and love I have for this community often enough. But thank you. Your quiet (and loud) support is amazing. If you think this tweet could be about you, it is.
1) The poster is the butt of the joke - not the spouse
2) It's not implying dishonesty between partners
3) It doesn't insult the intelligence of either party
4) It doesn't degrade the hobby
5) It doesn't imply an unhealthy addiction to a hobby
6) It features a dog
Jubilee was the first Asian girl I ever got to see in a cartoon... or basically any kids media other than an occasional Sesame Street kid.
Other kids made fun of her because of her sparkle fingers and I'd fight (literally got into a fight) for her. Forever my fave.
Illustrations for a card-heavy game can be VERY expensive - to the point that it makes the difference between a game being made or not.
But it is wrong to use AI generated art for illustrations in a commercial card game.
There is a legit problem, but AI is not the solution.
And here's a glimpse at what we'll have for you to check out at PAX Unplugged.
Just remember: If you play Berried Treasure with
@425suzanne
, she gets to go first.
HAHHAHAHAHAHHA
Y'all. This is my personal twitter. I drop f-bombs.
I FUCKING LOVE SWEARING.
I don't swear on the podcast because it's intended as a family friendly show. Time and place, y'know.
But you're here? I swear. Don't like it? Don't flounce. Just GTFO.
(Seriously - for those who get tired of my advocacy for inclusive gaming or dislike the words I use or the way I approach it? Blame the folks who shit on me in my early days of content. They shaped the way I handle this stuff.)
When I was 18, two guys (30+ and 40+) played a game of Magic and the winner got to go on a date with me.
Neither had asked me if I wanted to go on a date with one of them.
What is your most "I can't believe I kept playing Magic after this" moment?
Here's mine: I'm going to my first ever PTQ. I'm SO nervous because I've never played at competitive REL before, only FNMs.
Round 1: Die to T3 Pack Rat
Round 2: Die to T3 Pack Rat
lmao 🐀
The thing Twitter users seem to forget about “debate” is that debate is an activity agreed upon between the parties. There’s mutual consent.
Running up in someone’s mentions and then demanding they debate you is not how debate works.
Some super niche
#BoardGame
micro-conventions I want:
- Dead CCG Con
- Legacy Game Con
- Obscure Dexterity Games Con
- No English Rules Game Con
- Trick-Taking Games Con
- All Roll And Write Con
Who's in?
All you publishers and designers reaching out to Black folk in board gaming asking them to review your policies or statements - you had better be paying them.
Look folks. You're gonna piss someone off. You're going to upset a percentage of your audience/consumers if you say nothing, if you say something too softly, if you say something too strongly, if you say something they take personally, if you say something they don't believe...
Flash forward as board game content was growing, and I was seeking and not finding many women or many non-white people. This felt so wrong and discouraging to me.
So. You know... be the change you want to see and all that jazz.
I started making video segments about BG apps.
ME: Board Game prices are a barrier to inclusion and the industry needs to be mindful of this
ALSO ME: Board Game makers/artists deserve to be paid fairly for their tremendous hours and talent poured into games
ALSO ALSO ME: WAAAAHHHHH Why are fancy trays so expensive?
CUSTOMS: what is your destination?
ME: Essen
CUSTOMS: for work?
ME: For fun!
CUSTOMS: Essen is fun?
ME: It is if you play board games!
CUSTOMS: ...
ME: It’s a big board games convention - The Spiel
CUSTOMS: ...
CUSTOMS: ...
CUSTOMS: I’ve never heard of this.
ME: 😞
Many board gamers don't like mass market "exclusive" games... I'd like to add my perspective as 1) someone playing hobby games for 25+ years 2) spent nearly 20 years at marketing agencies for Fortune 100 clients 3) works in the BG industry now.
Sometimes when I feel bad about the thumbs down my content gets, I remember that 164 people down-thumbed MR. ROGERS.
There will always be a few souls out there that aren't being the kind of people Mr. Rogers believed they could be.
I had NO idea how to make a video. And I tell the tale often of how the first YEARS I used Windows Movie Maker and the built in camera on my laptop to record. I mean - for reals. This is so janky and rigged. Looking back I can't believe I did this.
