One advantage I find about moving to Sydney is that I finally meet journalists who also speak Cantonese. The very moment when we talk about our China reporting in Cantonese, a door toward those emotions that you’ve hidden for years suddenly opens.
Mary is absolutely right here. I might also add that language is at the core of our identities and who we are, and an alternate kind of identity that is not dependent on, or even opposed to, an authoritarian state is also threatening.
