Every day, you have opportunities to do something like this for someone, keep your head up today & maybe you'll find a way to put some good in the world for someone.
Meanwhile in Canada:
During a severe thunderstorm, an elderly man was unable to cross the road.
When random strangers saw him — they ran over to help him cross.
This is what kindness looks like.

Today we decided to make a minimum floor salary for everyone
@SeerInteractive
- We've kicked the can on this idea for almost 2 years, figuring out the details is exhausting, so last week we said f**k it, pay everyone 65k minimum & we'll figure out the rest.
@DanPriceSeattle
Dan, I have a friend who works at a large gas company and YEARS ago he broke down for me how when prices for raw materials go up they raise their prices immediately, but the way they make their money is when those costs go down, they bring down the pump prices very slowly.
I'mma be honest, at first I wasn't sure I wanted to follow
@ShaunKing
as I didn't know him, and his stuff at first seemed pretty polarizing, now I'm do thankful for him, he's a single source of a view I just don't get to see on any news outlets.
Recently realized that running a profitable biz year after year gets you little attention. We've made 5x what in profit in a year what some startup raised, yet the attention is focused on
VC raises
The big "we're going to double headcount in 6 months" statements
And the exits
10 years running, we send flowers to every
@SeerInteractive
's team members mom, It started as me asking 7 people if they wanted to join my order when I was buying flowers for my mom, today, 155 moms got flowers as a thank you for sharing their awesome kids w/ us. Thanks!
When 1 picture sums up your whole relationship with a person.
Rand: Wil, you still working on that slide deck?
Wil: Yeah
Rand: Well let me calm your 7 month old down by walking him around the plane so you can finish.
That

Friends, I'm unfollowing nearly all accounts & putting people in lists instead. If I want a topic I'll go to a list, like the paper used to be. I'm doing this to improve my focus, i find I've jumped on Twitter for one thing & get dragged into something else. Lets see how it goes
@randfish
We congratulate the start, not the finish.
Raise money - congrats
Make money - crickets
Go into debt for new house - congrats
Pay off house - crickets
Get married - let's have a huge wedding for 10-30k & go in debt - congrats
Stay married - crickets
What would happen if you LOVED your job, were 100% content with your life & somehow ended up building a business worth $50 Million but didn't want any of the upside to benefit you personally? This is what would happen -
When you get a c-level in your meeting, be prepared what some of them might be hoping to see. Calm your inner geek & get to it.
NOTE: I've been blown up by a LOT of clients in my time I learned these lessons the hard way. I still make them on occasion.
Its weird to have someone thank healthcare workers first thing when hoisting the lombardi trophy and he doesn't have a mask. Not even around his neck. You wanna thank healthcare workers, i dunno maybe tell people to wear masks that is a good thank you too.
New approach to anger:
Last time I was really angry about something (doesn't happen often) - I drove to target bought $100 dollars worth of food, went home & made lunches for people experiencing homelessness, gave out the lunches to people until my anger was gone.
Dear digital marketers, none of your data is 100% accurate, learning to be OK with 90% or 80% accuracy is always better than guessing, and its usually better than investing TONS of hours in getting it perfect.
Allowing your client to give you ambiguous goals is a recipe for eventual disaster, learning the art of pinning your client to some kind of a goal is a key skill. I'll be recording a video about this in the next few weeks.
Don't ever let anyone get in your head & make you feel lesser b/c you are content where you are. We don't all need more stamps in our passports, more responsibility at work, more financial gains, dare I say, it probably takes more strength to kill that noise than to listen to it
This dude said hey I was at

last year did the stuff you showed, found 3.2 million in questionable clicks, decent ROI on that ticket right? ;) Secret speakers love knowing when people execute, so tell them, it means the world.
One of our lesser known perks, we had a great year this year so we made 45k available to help team member pay down student loans. As someone who didnt have them, I didn't fully understand how much they effect people.
I can’t thank
@wilreynolds
and
@SeerInteractive
enough for the student loan program. 😭 I also can’t say it enough: WORK WHERE YOU ARE APPRECIATED. Blog about the program coming soon.
Why is it when a white dude commits mass murder it's a mental health issue. When a bunch of middle eastern men fly planes into buildings committing mass murder, its an attack on America. Maybe both are attacks on America by hateful people who knew exactly what they were doing.
The most visited blog post EVERY month on Seer's website is was written 4 years ago, shockingly, its the one that took the longest to write, & is the most in depth. Be careful blogging weekly vs doing 3-4 major drops all year that could help people for years

@taylorcoil
Wonder how much visibility into search terms we lost? We went from 98% visibility down to 78%....overnight.
This is tens of thousands of queries we would have mined for inefficient spend that we now do not have access to.
Who pays for that? Advertisers.
For everyone (like me) who thinks we don't need Another celebrity (Oprah) in the White House, read this by

employees mom or mother figure. Don't know the ROI on this but it allows me to express gratitude to the people who support our people.
Our children shouldn't have to hold signs like this.
They shouldn't have to be at protests like this.
And their parents shouldn't have to crush their innocence this early by explaining what this sign means.
Be careful of spending so much time getting good at something that you don't put enough time into getting good at explaining how that something improves business outcomes that executives care about.
I'm super close to wrapping up a post on what it is like to lose your largest client, & how to minimize the damage. I feel there's just not enough discussion about these kinds of things. Hope you share things you do on the post, it makes all of us stronger.
Overheard in an airport lounge from a manager to a co-worker
"We'll figure this out together"
Regardless of what you do, what industry you are in, that is a GREAT manager. My other fave...
"I won't let you fail on your own, we might fail, but we'll fail together"
When someone says you are killing it at work
Don't say "thank you"
Instead consider replying with "what did you see in me that made you say that"
The first one can make you feel good
The second teaches you what behaviors to replicate to keep killling it.
I used to suck at sales, in 2000s I was getting beat by ppl selling offshore SEO at similar prices. I got a sales coach, he forced me to ask 7 Qs before I made any statements. It was weird & awkward, but today looking back, it had helped me in so many areas of communications.
Someone sent me this today...Causes of death vs what people search on Google vs NYT coverage vs Guardian coverage. Man I wonder what this would look like with my local news - Also this viz is pretty darn good too.
IF there's 1 reason to follow Goodable, it's that from time to time they post stuff that reminds you, it's easier than you think to be a good human. It's a challenge to keep your eyes open for things you could walk by as "not my job" & flip to "I can do a little extra good today"
This Amazon driver was delivering a package when he noticed snow covering the owner's walkway.
So he went back to his car, got out his shovel, and decided to shovel it for them.

In Utah, two opposing candidates are running for governor.
They wanted to do something to make politics more civil — and remove the hatred and negativity.
So they came together to make this.
I have felt helpless with a few friends, co-workers, clients going through some real life challenges. REAL shit that I can't do anything meaninful to help alleviate. If you are an employer or employee, try to cut people you work w/ some slack, they might have some stuff goin on.
You take a trust hit when your customer who prepaid for a year comes to you saying "hey can we get out / some relief" & you reference contracts as your reason why you can't help them at this time. Those actions are never forgotten, short term good for you today, long term bad.
With Google taking away search terms it might take advertisers longer to find things like when rap songs are triggering your keywords, I saw a bank drop 60k on 21 savages "bank account" before they caught it, agency made $$, Google Made $$, Client was left holding the bag.
What
@randfish
is saying here is key. Search people if you are not re setting expectations on how much traffic you'll get from Google organic you've got problems.
2016 - 26 organic clicks to 1 paid click
2019 - 11 organic clicks to 1 paid click

This is also Kensington in Philly, Google it, each the news and it's all bad. Today my kid is in a soccer tournament in a pay what you can league. Is the next Messi coming here? No.
But I'm here shocked by the volunteers who have cleaned this field and got it into good shape.
Google has a big update coming, I got a chance to sit with their team & get a feel for what this means. Here are a few of my thoughts, with an example of the kind of non helpful content I've seen ranking and will be looking out for as this update rolls out
I don't know what to say other than watch this. I hope to raise my kids to know their facts and know how to speak truth to power.
@GaryChambersJr
called on all people here who are involved from the police, white people, black people, he called on everyone to do their part.
Watching tiger woods win is amazing, it's got a different feel this time because I have sons both of whom are black/part black. You wish they were just a bit older so you could tell them that just 30 years ago tiger wasn't allowed to play at Augusta Natl b/c he too is part black
When humans do something bad it gets all the coverage / social media, but the reality is every day millions of humans show up to do good things for other humans.
Thank you
@Goodable
for reminding me that the good ones outnumber the bad ones 1,000,000/1.
This is Andriy. He's eleven and loves Lego.
When his family fled Ukraine, he had to leave his Legos behind. So his dad put a call out asking if anyone had any they could send him.
He thought a few people would help.
Instead, they got hundreds of Legos from around the world.
In Sweden you get a text message telling you that your blood has been used to save a life. This is a very smart way to make a connection to donors in a way likely to encourage them to keep donating.
More CEOs don't give themselves a salary than you think, they work their asses, launch products, speak at conferences all while not taking a pay. If you are brave enough to share please do, links, stories, whateve...It's a reality people need to hear.
Some mornings entrepreneurship looks like this. Fixing PowerBi files for a team member so they can kick ass for clients. They don't show this on shark tank. Trying to win @ business looks more like this than anything you've read this week. Files fixed time to walk the dog.
There are some human beings I'm so glad are on this planet. This is one of them. We can geek, we can talk real shit, & homegirl is always a ray of positivity.

Here's a little perspective you may not think of that comes from being a black speaker at a conference...often times the staff who clean up the plates and open the doors (to make sure you are allowed in rooms) are black.
Why I made 150k available to the parents & sig others of my team member at this time summed up in 1 sentence.
It's not that commendable, its stuff we learned in the sandbox.
An air ambulance needed to take off from a small airport in Alaska, but a storm had knocked out the airport's electricity.
When residents found out, more than 30 people showed up with their cars — lining the runway with their headlights so that the plane could take off.
In Toronto, a supermarket was mistakenly left open on Easter Sunday.
When shoppers went inside, they found it deserted with no staff.
According to the police, nobody stole anything.
Those who took groceries left notes with what they took, so they could return to pay later.
While people would like you to think so much is wrong. I'll tell you this, you couldn't pay me to be born 50 yrs ago. I couldn't marry my wife, my same sex friends would have been in the closet, women would have been expected to be raising babies. I'll take 2019, warts & all.
Every morning (almost) before work I run, and every morning I see the world wake up and I watch the sun come up and it's a reminder, whatever I didn't like about yesterday I'm alive to make better today. Happy Friday y'all. Make something better if you can.
Got my 17 years
@SeerInteractive
reminder on LinkedIn.
Thankful I still love my job 17 years later, I'm nowhere near burnt out. I attribute that to our team & being bootstrapped.
I love it when I am interviewing someone and they have someone (cat, kid, sig other) walking around in the background and DO NOT apologize for it or even flinch at it happening.
We're all doing the best we can with the tools we got in this pandemic.
Philly CEO

*$3M/year in bonuses for 215 employees
*$1,500 stipends to laid-off family members of employees
$62,000 employee donation budget
Ooooh Google, I see you. While this might not put a dent in Amazon, it's genius and actually helpful for people to more easily be shown a zero cost option.
Can't help but think how many things happen where we don't have video. If these guys were willing to stomp on that guy's neck like that IN FRONT OF CITIZENS without so much as thinking, shit we should stop. Imagine what they do when no one is around.
@DanPriceSeattle
@SeerInteractive
You've done enough buddy. Next time someone tells you "you are putting it out in public for ego" remember that if you keep this to yourself you wouldn't light a fire in people like me.
I love zoom fatigue, because that means I'm on zoom a lot, and if I'm on zoom a lot, I have work, and I have a job, and if I have a job I can afford things I and my family want and not be as stressed as people who have lost their jobs ... Grateful for all the zooms

Looking forward to finding an inbox solution that automatically removes people who send "did you get my last email" emails that I've never replied to, to spam.
A lot of people ask me what can I do, I'm trying to figure that out too, but one thing to do, is consider becoming a big brother / big sister, a lot of youth need someone to help check in on them right now.
Today we hired our cleaning crew as a full time employee (Philly) w/ full benefits, here's why that is important to us:

✔️ 401k
✔️Full benefits / HSA
✔️ Education stipend, etc etc.

culture add > culture fit
Recently read that...
how does this person add to the culture vs fit the culture.
Add is like putting ketchup on fries, its different but makes the thing better,
Fit is more fries, as it fits well with all the other fries in the box

Once a CEO has enough, decisions like this are easy to make.
My financials are going to look like crap for a few years, still worth it
Some people might be pissed, still worth it
Now we have 30 new questions to resolve, still worth it.
We owe it to our team to create a floor.
