@JoeOrgana
Before I got sick I tried the gym, I managed to go three times- once I got in a fight with an old man about Brexit, once I got sexually harassed and once I got injured because the gym dude thought it would be funny to teach me to use the machine wrong
@DisabledEliza
I’m trying to rid my speech of ableist language and there are so many more words than I even expected. And now I’ve started I notice more when others use them and it makes me so uncomfortable
@oldenoughtosay
When I had my allergic reaction (caused by pharmacy), you could see the rumour go round the dept as everyone came round to peer at me.. and each dr asked for the contact details of the place
@RachelCDailey
I was on the tube in my wheels yesterday and had to ask people to move so I could park in the wheelchair space- the dirty looks I got for daring to ask to manoeuvre into the one space put aside for wheelies
@DisabledEliza
“I fell off a unicycle” which sounds ridiculous and also has the benefit of being the truth
Or I did once ask when the asker had last had their prostate checked (presenting male) and when they did the shocked pikachu face said “well you asked me an invasive medical q too”
@ItsEmilyKaty
The afternoon slump! Between 2-4pm I just cannot function, doesn’t matter what I try and I ended up eating skittles at 2.30pm every day to try to and get past it
@DBeasleyHarling
I was 12 when I realised Uncle Tim and Uncle Eddie were gay.. I knew they were together but it just didn’t click for me! My younger brother told my parents he wanted to be like them and marry his best friend (adorable 😍)
@UntoNuggan
Drs didn’t realise two of my medications were contraindicated until I ended up on a cardiac ward- my mum figured it out in 5 minutes once I started having symptoms.
@bluejay19xx
As a Christian it irritates me so much when others ask to pray for me, because they’re praying for my disabilities- a huge part of my identity- to disappear, when what I actually need is access to language, to support, to tech etc.
@TinyWriterLaura
When I fell out the chair they got me to transfer into because I was in so much pain and then couldn’t do the exercises because I went hypo and had a pots episode the assessor noted ‘Elli refused to do the exercises despite not appearing to be in any pain’.
@ZJAyres
I would be tempted to put these ones in:
‘Elli is crap at maths and will never be a physicist’ - Mr Hill, 2012
‘There’s never going to be an ‘Elli Theory’ of anything, you won’t get that far’ - Mr Parson, 2012
My mum was advocating for me at hospital today and corrected the nurses when they said ‘hard of hearing’ because I use deaf and I’m honestly so proud of her

I have been waiting and praying for a wheelchair contest, im so excited to see what they’re going to do and how they’re going to adapt the dances
I got my PIP decision yesterday and after over two years of fighting and appeals and tribunal and changes of circumstances it says that I get the enhanced rate of care and mobility. I could cry with happiness

I discovered when I got my HSD diagnosis that ALL of my apparently disconnected diagnoses were linked to HSD. Suddenly I had a link and that changed my drs approach!

I bring my mum to all my appointments, and a lot of other places, because I’m deaf and a wheelchair user and also faint at random intervals so I need her there. Bringing a parent/ advocate is not a bad thing

I’m a PhD student in Semiconductor Physics! I look at super cold structures and how it makes the electrons and atoms interact! I have no photos of me in the lab so have this one of me in Cornwall last week 😊

Hi, I’m Elli and I’m a disabled PhD student at UCL. I study 1D transport in Germanium, and in my free time I run a society and a Guide unit!

One of my friends drew a tree on our exam and wrote ‘I don’t understand the question but the tree is made of atoms’ and the prof gave her a mark because it was a pretty tree (physics)

As a fat historical reenactor, I make all my clothes and I sometimes alter original patterns to fit me, however also I OFTEN DON’T HAVE TO ALTER THEM because they are made for fat people too!!
Husband knows I’m really sad about not being able to camp anymore due to my various body issues so he’s going to help me camp in the garden this weekend. What a man 😍

I empathise- mine were anti some vax so I’m missing some random ones and every time I try and talk to the drs they’re like ‘you’re an adult you should have had this one as a child’ YES I KNOW
@kellymakena
At our old house our bedroom was on the ground floor and the window looked right onto our bed, I’m chronically ill so I was often still in it when the morning school run happened and I had one particular child who would check if I was in bed every day and report it to parent
@DeathCab4Callie
I had to change from an experimental to a theoretical PhD because they refused to get me a wheelchair for the clean room and said if I couldn’t safely stand I wasn’t allowed in.
@butchanarchy
We left a church when I was 8 and first diagnosed with T1D bc a lady came up to me and told me I was diabetic because I was a dirty sinner
I just had to tell the cashier in the local shop that it’s okay to say I’m disabled. It’s not a dirty word for pity’s sake

I went to appeal and then tribunal and I was given standard care and high mobility and the judge was very surprised I’d not been given it immediately
Except they won’t say it’s your disability- it’s ‘redundancy’ or ‘streamlining’ or pushing you to quit because they won’t do accommodations or do them so slowly you end up more disabled than when you started
@bibicosplays
They literally can’t fire you for your disability and must provide reasonable accommodations. What that generally means is you’re not good at your job
Since all my (male) physics hero’s seem to have been outed as horrible people recently does anyone have (female) physicists to recommend? Bonus points for disability or neurodivergence!

Today I am filled with imposter syndrome, but for my disabilities. I feel like I can't be in that much pain, I must be a wuss, and surely I'm not deaf because I can sort of hear people some of the time and so I must be overreacting. Anyone got any tips?

This isn’t a prank, this is mean and cruel and very unkind. A prank is something harmless and funny that everyone laughs at, and is not at the expense of the prankee.
Have to keep pausing when reading ONE FOR ALL for a little cry because

perfectly encapsulates the feeling of isolation from being chronically ill and somehow has managed to describe POTS perfectly

I got told my disability ‘wasn’t that serious’ today because I transferred from a car to my wheelchair. Genuinely didn’t know what to say.
@Nina__Tame
I have found since my deafness increased now when I go to hospital the HCPs have stopped asking me for permission to have others observe. It’s terrifying when a group of HCPs is hovering watching you and you don’t know why
@jenheemstra
Definitely didn’t do this right the first time around, and suffered for it. Second attempt starts next week and is already going MUCH better!
Every time I’m ill, I start at the lowest doc level and every time it gets escalated to A&E/ hospital bc I am so worried I’m imagining it I underplay symptoms to the point where I can end up hospitalised.
this pernicious myth that we’re out here exaggerating our symptoms for attention is LAUGHABLE* compared to the reality that we are out here convincing ourselves that we’re imagining major traumatic injuries.
*like very very angry villain laughter. this shit is my villain story.
Dear Mother who gave me a dirty look as I exited the family bathroom, I also wish I did not need the space for my crutches and dodgy ankle but unfortunately I do. The disabled bathroom was in use and I can't stand in a queue

It’s also happened before when people have been unwell/ injured- it’s not like it’s something that’s only happened for Tasha. It’s always been accepted that sometimes people get sick- deaf people are allowed to be sick too
@golemgabi
When I was at uni there was a fire alarm so I went to the disabled shelter in place, and there was a button for an intercom for the reception. I pressed and waited and was there for as long as the alarm lasted. When I questioned it, the receptionist had turned off the intercom
@porridgebrain
My diabetes consultant always writes whole paragraphs about how my studies are going- she said it’s because I’m a person not a bunch of symptoms
@AutSciPerson
I left my PhD last month, and my mental health has returned, my physical health is improving, and my spouse has said they’re happy to get their wife back. I’ve had space and time to get back into my hobbies, and I sleep so much better.
@AmyClarkin
Aged 19, my gynaecologist told me to get pregnant to stop my painful periods. I told him I wanted my PhD first so I needed an alternative..
I am being ‘gently encouraged’ to consider another PhD project because I am ‘too disabled’ to do the current one without major adjustments. Do I (a) fight to stay or (b) go along with it and have a say in my new project?

A student in my uni class came in with the flu, sat behind me and coughed over me for 3 hours, despite me asking him to leave and/ or move. I ended up in hospital with flu fighting to breathe. Disabled people have always known the dangers.
My supervisor just tore my draft apart and I thanked him because I’ve had no feedback on this work until now and I’m just so happy that I have some goals to work towards
