Saw a GR review on a great book where the reviewer gave a 1 ⭐️ because there was too much Spanish w/ no glossary and then proceeded to say the author should be ashamed. Here’s a hint. If you pick up a book by a Latino author about Latino characters there might be Spanish in it.

I remember when I was teaching middle school in OR, one of my Mexican-American students told me I was the 1st M-A teacher she’d ever had. She remembers me telling her, ‘You’ll light the world on fire someday.’ I found out she went into teaching and is now a principal. 😭

A few years back I was on a waitlist and I didn’t get a coveted spot at a renowned writer’s workshop. I was disappointed because I had plans to get feedback on my novel. That same year I got a book deal for said novel. Point is, don’t wait for others to validate you. Write.

Listen, I’ve worked with 13 year old kids in gangs, out on the streets, engaged in criminal activity. I wrote a novel about them. And I’m still no expert, but I do know this. They are children and not men. All children should be loved and mourned when we lose them.
