On this day in 1981 we experienced a great snowstorm the first of several snowstorms in the Winter of 1981-82. Temps dropped to -20c locally. The cold started on Dec 7th and lasted until Jan 15th 1982 with just a short milder interlude. They don’t make winters like that anymore!

If you think today is cold and frosty let me take you back to April 26th 1981. The Midlands experienced a severe snowstorm with 10-20cm of snow for most of us with power line icing causing extensive power cuts too. It was the latest and most potent April snow in recorded history.

Tomorrow is the 48th anniversary of the great June snowfall which fell on 2nd June 1975. Snow fell widely in the morning. Many of the West Indies cricketers playing at Buxton where 3cm fell had never seen snow before. Snow even settled on low ground as far South as London!

A special gift. A 365 day temp weather rug! Each colour represents a different temp at midday in Leicester during 2023. The mat starts in Jan and goes to Dec It shows clearly the mainly mild winter and the very hot June and Sep and the very cool Aug day at 12c. Fabulous Ruth!!

What we have just experienced is called a line squall! This is line between the milder airmass and a much colder one. Sometimes the boundary is very marked with Cumulonimbus clouds going up to 35k giving us very dramatic weather for a short time!!
