Myth: Forming a union will turn over of the right to deal with OUP individually to a third party.
Fact: WE are the union! There is no third party. Employees will still be able to deal with OUP on an individual basis; the union will have a say in decisions that affect *everyone.*
Our demands are simple:
-Job security in a diverse workplace
-Dignified compensation keeping pace w/ cost of living
-Defined job responsibilities
-Improved career development & evaluative processes
-Formal recourse to address longstanding issues of sexual harassment & layoffs
🚨URGENT CALL TO ACTION🚨
We learned that OUP has hired a notorious and expensive union-busting law firm, Jackson Lewis, in response to our union effort, with the aim of sowing fear, mistrust, and division among staff. 🧵
This union is made up of people who love OUP and are committed to building and improving this historic institution. In light of changes across the publishing industry, we see collective bargaining as the best way to preserve a strong, vibrant company for years to come.
We have come together from across the company's departments to improve our conditions collectively. Forming a union will enable us, and future OUP employees, to advocate for changes in staff conditions to make the company a stronger and more sustainable institution.
Yesterday, OUP management confirmed they will not voluntarily recognize the union, citing the desire for a truly democratic process and the chance for every eligible employee's voice to be heard. 🧵
Let’s be clear:
We believe in
@OxUniPress
and its mission; we want it to succeed. But we also recognize a need for critical changes at this moment in the company's history. All we hope for is the cooperation of senior management in this process.
#OUPUSAGuild

Only we, the workers, can make OUP’s mission a reality. A union will improve company morale, management/staff relations, and the quality of our work by giving us a collective voice in decisions that directly affect us, our work, and our mission.

#UnionizeUP
As employees of Oxford University Press, we are honored to uphold the company’s mission of furthering excellence in academic publishing. We believe in publishing educational materials that are accessible for everyone, prioritizing scholarship over profit.
Since unionizing is inherently a democratic effort, who are we to argue? We are confident that the support we already have -- over 70% of eligible employees -- will remain strong until our vote is held in a few weeks... (2/3)
Today was our first day of
#bargaining
with management for a fair contract for OUP USA employees! We’ve worked so hard to get to this stage and are so excited to enter this next step of the union process. Follow along via our socials to stay in the loop!
#UnionizeUP
Our priorities are intended to ensure the sustainability of OUP’s centuries-long legacy and to serve as a model for fairness and stability across the industry. We hope to prove that bookmakers deserve more for their often overworked, underpaid efforts.
Overwhelmingly, we are unionizing because we care about our company✊, believe in our mission📚, & love our colleagues and want the absolute best for them🥰
We asked our supporters what they're most excited for. Here are some of their answers. 🧵

Last week, we presented a proposal for OUP to offer paid leave to employees seeking gender affirming or reproductive care in states where access has been criminalized by the recent Dobbs v. Jackson decision and anti-trans legislature.
📢We need your help! OUP Mgmt has announced they will give us an update on where they stand this Thursday AM. Before then, we need as much support as possible! Here are the key🔑 actions you can take.

“I am unionizing because I believe in having stability and diversity at our company. I believe that the work we do at OUP has great value. Our day-to-day lives should reflect that, and the best way to achieve that is through a union.”

#Publishing
is an industry largely restricted to the elite and the rich -- people who can afford to work for low pay, or people who already have literary connections. That needs to change to reflect the diversity of our readers *and* the world we live in.

With more than 70% of eligible employees in support of the

Workers at Oxford University Press are threatening to strike, alleging the publishing house is deliberately moving jobs abroad, have stonewalled the union in salary negotiations, amid other unfair labor practices.

EXCLUSIVE: While locked in a contentious battle over tech staffers unionizing, NY Times management’s counsel mistakenly sent its game plan to the union.
The employer, across multiple instances, hired people outside of the Guild’s jurisdiction after bargaining unit members left the company. If this practice is allowed to continue, the very existence of the Guild is threatened.

@OxUniPress
, D&I is just one of many initiatives about workplace culture. For us in the Guild, it is absolutely core to our mission and to OUP's mission. Today, we're posting some testimonials as to why
#DiversityandInclusion
is so important to us.
By representing OUP, Jackson Lewis has now extended its anti-unionism into

We need you to tell OUP: fire Jackson Lewis immediately. Union-busting has no place in higher ed or academic publishing, ESPECIALLY when OUP's mission is to place scholarship over profit.

We are having a public rally via Zoom TOMORROW, Wednesday, September 1! DM this account for the link to register -- it's open to anyone and everyone! We will be celebrating our progress and rallying support for the final push!
That's all for now, folks! Again, we are hoping management will voluntarily recognize this. We've been given a timeframe of sometime next week to hear more info, so please keep up the support! Spread the word beyond Twitter if you can.

And another update... ⏮️Last week, we sent a list of ground rules to

management in the hopes of ensuring a fair and consistent election. If this were a true democratic election, both parties would have equal time and opportunity to speak. However... 🧵

Many of us worry about job security not because of personal or company performance, but because OUP's layoffs are sudden and nearly always create much more work for remaining colleagues. This needs to change.
