is in progress and I'm starting to prepare my pre- proposal for PhD in Business Admin or a DBA. Hectic but good. Happy 2023🧡
I have been recording since September. The band is done and dusted; now recording the master vocals. In fact I was studio this afternoon. This tweet below is right on time😂it got the cat out the bag! It is so heartwarming to know people are eagerly waiting for my new music❤️
Album Credits. Business school challenged my understanding of an “independent artist.” It makes so much more sense now because truly and honestly, you need people and partnerships to create an album, especially one that you can respect. Thank you again🙏🏽❤️
When I wrote my Masters dissertation on Makeba back in 2007-2009, I thought I "knew" her. Oh the arrogance of youth🤣. Over 10 years later, I'm back to researching and writing about her. Only now do I feel like I'm scratching the surface of who and what she truly was.
What an absolute pleasure to be on
@wtftumi
tonight with these incredible women. The stunning host herself , Tumi Morake, Honorable Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and the indomitable

The love I have for this Queen has no bounds. What an honor to sing in her presence. I'll always tell her how her music was school to me. She is my "Mountain Shade"♥️♥️ Mother Sibongile Khumalo.
I have read every single comment about the album. I will respond. Just taking a day or two to exhale. Breathe a deep sigh of relief. Its been quite a journey! Giving you the space to listen and take it all in. It’s the least I can do after making you for 9 years😂Ndiyabulela❤️
The version on my album comes from the Hosana (Xhosa) hymnal yaseDutch/NG Kerk in Afrika). My great grandfather was the first black minister. I grew up attending church with my gran (Bulie) and hymn 92 has always been my favourite as a child. It’s just sublime, here you go🤗
I'm all over the place at the moment (mostly the airport😭) but I have to quicky quickly share this clip from Masicule in Makhanda. I am still on such a high from guesting on this very important project that brings choristers from all over Makhanda to sing together!
Here's my small offering on this Sunday afternoon! Filmed at Kaya FM in Feb. "Umlamb 'Ophilisayo" (written by Mandisi Dyantyis). What a joy to sing with
@TitiLuzipo
always!
I've penned my 1st newspaper piece, reflecting on my relationship with the piano. It's part of a collection of stories around pianist Bheki Mseleku. There's more to the piano than simply being a musical instrument. Published in The Mail & Guardian🙏🏽
I have an Executive MBA from the Henley Business School. Certificates and graduations are just a formality mos? Cos I'm not waiting till September to claim it☝ It is done! It is passed well! Once grief makes room, I will celebrate appropriately. Most likely through music. 🙏📕❤
On her 90th birthday today, I reflect on Makeba’s artistry as activism. I trouble the overstatement of the role Belafonte and the other men her life played in the trajectory of her success. Her name needs no co-anchor. Happy Birthday Mazi❤
2020 is my final year of MBA😳. Time has flown so quickly! From that 1st day in class overcome with acute imposter syndrome to being in my last stage..Wow! I've studied in silence and continue to (for focus). When I'm done, I'll share my journey. Also 2020=Album 3 😎 ♥️
What a great day. Got results for MBA Stage 1, I passed. With merit. No rewrite/supplementary needed. It's been a long wait. Hard work. Emotionally draining. The girls (family) took me out for Champers at Nicolway. Laughed till we cried😂😭. Ohh man, I love my family ♥️♥️
Yes I AM teaching at the UCT College of Music this year. I'll be lecturing in Jazz Voice, Jazz Vocal Technique, Jazz Ensemble, Masterclass and maybe a segment of South African Jazz History (I'd focus on Singers).😊
Worse things have happened than Artists receiving relief funding to sustain themselves during a pandemic EVEN if they don't meet the "criteria." If the money is there, pay it out. Artists have suffered enough indignity.
11 years since the death of Mama Miriam Makeba. It is still my dream to one day, one day...deliver a Miriam Makeba Memorial Lecture. I'd title it something like "Ilifa likaMazi: A Legacy hidden in plain sight"...One Day🙏
When the love brings you to tears! And all you can do is sit down and let the people sing😭🙏We create the Art. Then we surrender it. Thank you for permission to post this

The last time I saw him was after my performance at Sibongile Khumalo's 60th b-day concert last September. He hugged me 3x and said "I want your greatness to rub off on me". I replied "Likewise Brah Hugh... Likewise".
My tribute article to "Mother" Sibongile Khumalo has been published in The Conversation (
@TC_Africa
) as well as London Jazz News (
@LondonJazz
). I have chosen to memorialize her through the prism of personhood🙏
First day as an MBA student at Henley Business School and already I'm busy with an assignment due tomorrow. Talk about stretching oneself and stepping into the unknown. The only artist/Musician in my class. It's going to be tough..but backing out is not an option😎
More than 10 yrs later, I find myself writing about Makeba again. It's different this time. I'm older, slightly incredulous. Finding that the role of the men in her life has been grossly overstated. We must unbundled her legacy. More on that another time. Happy Birthday Mazi🙏❤
We must learn to wait before posting about someone's passing. Affording the family an opportunity to speak first is a basic tenet of respect. Just because you know, doesn't mean you have to post. Wait a little bit. 🙏
Oh Ncesh! 🥹Thank you for this. Congratulations on your beautiful single “Ndinethemba Uzobuya.” I’m so happy you’ve stepped into your gift. I cannot wait to come to your show and experience you live. Your voice matters❤️

Ndingazanga ndaya nje emendweni I wouldn't think a song about it would tear me up like this especially since this is not my first listen but today igqobhozile. Thank you for this song.
Today I examined Jazz Singing prac exams at UCT. Always such a treat to spend the day being sung to. I'm always reminded just how beautiful Jazz is. The melodies, the lyrics, the stories. Everything.
I thought this song was a secret but I see it's already out on the streets. This song sends me. I've decided it's my Election Anthem🤣. "Ngeny 'mini bovuk 'abantu bamanyane, bathathele amandla kubo ngoba Ziyafana Zonke, zingamaXoki Zonke"
@dmandisi
imnkile lengoma shem. Yiyeke🤦♀️
I've passed my 1st assignment with MERIT💃(Operations Module). I must confess I expected less🙈. This MBA thing is so hectic. Feedback from marker indicates that I still have to develop a deeper level of critical thinking. Issokay. I'll get there.🤗
Your daughter is absolutely stunning😍. Ohh man, may she carry this energy and self belief well into her adult years and beyond. Sending my love to her, Umhle kakhuuuuuul♥️♥️♥️
My relationship with the Piano is about more than just music. I was raised by my grandparents. My late Grandfather Sam Xaluva bought me a piano when I was 12 years old. I got the best of his Love. Happy Father's day to Gqwashu the King❤❤
Join us tomorrow for what promises to be a robust discussion about African Music as High Art. I cannot wait to engage with such esteemed black women panelists. Register here:
I'm out of order for not mentioning that I will be performing at this year's Fleur du Cap Awards🙄I means seriously, why would I keep such stunning news from the people? I'm beyond thrilled and deeply honored to be a part of celebrating the best in South African theatre♥️
Catch me on

tonight! I'll be speaking in my capacity as the Vice Chairman of the SAMRO Foundation Board. The finals of the scholarship competition are this coming Saturday evening in JHB. The countdown begins NOW. Later

Thank you so much for having me as a guest. It was such a safe space to share snippets of my new album with people for the first time. You held my vulnerability with such tenderness. Everybody who was there is an angel to me💕🙏🏽
Safely back in Cape Town after a whirlwind of week in Joburg with Joy of Jazz! Still processing the amazing 2 shows!😭For now, it's back to the books, Strategy assignment due on Friday (far from finished) and back to teach my "feeling neglected" UCT students tomorrow. Rest? 😆😆
To everyone who listened to our songs, bought a ticket for our shows. To everyone who introduced someone to the music, the venues we played, promoters and host. Kuni nonke siyabulela sithi nangamso. Nisenze abantu ❤️

This image (by Tebogo Letsie) beautifully captures the essence of last night. 1st time on stage in 2021. I had quite abit of baggage to offload. I thank the audience for indulging me🙏🏽❤
On the bright side: My friend, my sister
@BrendaMtambo
, you were absolutely stunning. So appropriate. You looked regal. Would have been so beautiful to sing together but you held it down! You're a Queen. Love you to the moon and back❤
Season Two was filmed in Ginsberg, Qonce, at the Steve Biko Centre. Broadcasting from tomorrow at 15:00 on S3, with daily repeats at 09:00. Unearthing the stories behind books and art, in every literary city in the world.

Me: How was the show last night?
Mandisi: Ahh it was really good. Spent a lot of time afterwards chatting to Esperanza (doesn't say surname ingathi baziPeto😳)..
Me: ohh...Esperanza?
Okay...Spalding?
Mandisi: Ewe Nomfundo!
Me: ohh..So uthini?
So good to be home in PE. Arrived this afternoon. From the airport we went straight to Blawa Butchery owned by Bhut Zola Yeye in New Brighton to buy inyama yombengo neRostile...You know you're home when all of a sudden umbane uku5 and funeka uyowuthenga kodwa uyafika😁😛♥️
Last night I had the honor of being the MC at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Media launch. It was daunting but absolutely amazing. Not only that but I also got to perform a collaboration with Zoe Modiga and Aus Tebza. I couldn't have asked for a better evening.
@JoyOfJazz
♥️
Great recording artists don't automatically make great performing artists. One can be amazing on a recording/album and weak on the stage (as a performer).
Have you ever?😭 My students have been so understanding of my exam preparation phase. I'd be in the middle of teaching and I would just drift off thinking about an MBA module🙈They totally understood. Not just the 1st years, all of them. I'm grateful.
#UCTJazzVocalists
In teaching students to be great performers, I also try and teach then to be good audiences. If you cannot respect/listen to those on stage, you cannot expect to be respected or listened to while on stage.
Busiswa and Moonchild came all the way through!!!! NIZIPHETHE👏👏👏👏. The biggest congratulations to these fierce black women and all the South African artists who feature in Black Is King. Makwande 👸👸
My 1st year students were so amazing on my Top Billing shoot this morning. Of course they had to take a selfie with Ayanda Thabethe before we headed to the next location😂. They sang the late Victor Ntoni's classic composition "Seliyana".

#SAJazzHeritage
Yesterday I played Sibongile Khumalo's recording of "Seliyana" during a lesson for a student who is learning it. Then suddenly it hit me "its her birthday tomorrow".I unraveled right there and then. The student just yielded for the grief wave that struck like a sharp chest pain.
Sending out positive vibes to anyone sitting at their desk (or lying in bed) writing! I was so convinced that when I finish my MBA, I'd take a break from research and writing. Finished in December. Dololo difference. What a joke ma daahling!😷📕📖
The guilt I feel when I have to miss lecturing due to travel for gigs or school...or both😭MBA Stage 2 starts on Monday. International Business🤨. Looking to record new Album during the June vac. All of this HAS to happen. And it will. Nakanjani bathandekayo😎😍🙌
I seldom attend alumni events but I decided to honor this invite. The Vice Chancellor hosted a cocktail event as a precursor to the Jazz Festival. Glad I went, saw some old faces from student days. Didn't quite make it across the street to the festival🙈came home to rest instead.
The richest decision I made for myself in 2018 was to apply and enroll for an Executive MBA at
@HenleyAfrica
. As a musician, I really thought I was reaching by applying to Business School. It's extremely challenging but I'm growing in ways unimaginable. Imposter syndrome lost💪
Did the UCT Memorial 10km race this morning. Was abit disturbed when a group of black women on the side of the road very loudly body shamed a fellow black female runner for having big hips..right in front of her. It was so mean. WTF? Why must we do such to each other though?😭😳
What an insightful interview I had with Tutu Puoane, probing her adaptation process of Lebo Mashile’s evocative anthology of poems to music on her latest album Wrapped in Rhythm (Vol 1). For the love of black women’s work, go on and have a read (and a listen, and a buy)❤️
Tutu Puoane’s new album is a thing of joy. Here

I just froze. My name is on the program for Mam 'Winnie's Memorial today. I know nothing about it. I'm in CPT in my pyjamas. God knows I would have sung like it was my last time. How did I miss this honor? Just spoke to Brenda. She got this❤
