Today I saw a man trying to figure out what groceries he didn't need because he didn't have enough on his gift card for all. It wasn't much, milk etc. I told the cashier I would pay his bill. He thanked me. As I left, he was waiting for a cab, crying. This shouldn't happen here.

The translators got it wrong. The Hebrew word ืืึนื / yom is often translated as "day." Yom in the T'nach has 4 meanings depending on the context. It can refer to 12hr of daylight, 24 day, a year or two or as an indefinite amount of time.
