Dick: Are you involved in tax avoidance?
David: I’m in the privileged position of running a museum that loses $15 million a year. That’s a lot of avoidance.

Now we are naked, wondering what to wear, so it’s a little embarrassing that everybody is watching. But for Mona, any future fits. We’ve made such a mess inside the museum it won’t be before October, but we’ll be back with bells (and lights) on.’

We’re flicking the switch: Ryoji Ikeda’s spectra returns this Thursday, from sunset to sunrise, at Mona. Continues until Sunday for
@Dark_Mofo
. Warm drinks and ferries running until late. Book here:
‘Mona opened ten years ago. That matters, because I have ten fingers and you, very likely, have ten fingers, so we count in tens. Our tenth anniversary—that’s a big thing to us decimal creatures, and it’s been made a bigger thing due to COVID-19.
We’ve had a big private event cancel at the last minute, so tomorrow we’re using the leftovers to throw a party for Tassie instead. Expect performances throughout the museum. There’ll also be live music on the lawn and more than the odd frosty pilsner.
You loved Ryoji Ikeda’s spectra [tasmania] at our first
@Dark_Mofo
. We all did. Now, on the winter solstice, join us in Mona’s grounds for its return: a towering pillar of light reaching into the night sky. Thursday 21–Sunday 24 June, sunset to sunrise.
These artists dreamed of an exhibition on the moon. Perhaps Tassie is as close (or far) as they are going to get.
ZERO runs at Mona until 22 April 2019.
A changeless thing, a legacy and a totem. A temple to light, to the history of ideas, a processional and a journey through the birth canal: Walsh on Pharos, the new wing of our museum.

Would you like Mona to experiment on you? The museum will remain closed until late 2020 at least, but David’s reopening Faro for experimental dining before then. Will you submit?
Mona will temporarily close from Wednesday 18 March while the COVID-19 situation unfolds. We will continue to review our options; more info to come. Read David Walsh's statement here:

Now’s your chance to find out: we’ve extended The Faro Experiments to include Friday nights, from 21 August. Limited lunch bookings still available:
Mona is (still) shut, but the feasting continues. Experimental food, juicy treats from our wineries and brewery, plus art to order off the menu. Plus live music. Plus your only way in to explore the shuttered museum. Plus plus. Bookings essential:
Since November Tim has been sitting for us as usual—except he’s in Europe, staying up all night to sit in our time zone.
Tune in 10am–4pm AEDT tomorrow for his final sitting, streamed live from Germany. Watch it in the museum or via
We’ve been forced to pause—we are thinking about the last ten years and the next ten years. The world won’t be the same, so Mona shouldn’t be the same. How it changes depends on how the world changes. Ten years ago, we were all dressed up, with no place to go.
Dick Smith: We should make the big tax payers famous, so they can feel like they’re showing off. It’s all about who has the biggest dick.

Black Friday. Pretty debased affair, all told. People climbing over octogenarians to get their hands on a 4K TV, etc. Gross. So we’re doing Brown Thursday instead. Different kind of gross—it’s going to be the shittest live-shopping event of the year. RSVP:
Not every museum makes a dog skivvy. There’s probably a reason for that. Here’s the skinny (dog). Niche product. Only sixty of them. Not cheap. Handmade. 100% merino. ‘Art Critic’ embroidered on the back. Let your dog look as pretentious as you do.
