during what turned out to be the early days of the lockdown, I started a series of drink recipes on twitter--cocktails for the collapse of civilization, makeable by all, enjoyable by all. I've archived them here. there are about 100... don't be a hero.
well. this is the drink I was saving for the big moment--when things went right, when the world came untangled, when good news was ascendant. that moment hasn't come. but 100ish recipes in, the time is now. let's have death in the afternoon
Millions of Americas are struggling to pay for life's essentials right now.
Every day we see fundraisers for rent, utilities, and even groceries.
But GoFundMe was never made to be a source of support for basic needs, and it can never be a replacement for robust federal relief.
saying "white supremacists have a point about immigration but they're wrong to be violent about it" doesn't make you nuanced, it makes you a white supremacist
the push against transgender people, politically, has moved very quickly from "we have to keep sports fair" to "your existence is illegal now"
lots of people who study politics noted this was likely to happen but were dismissed as alarmist
If you define being gay or trans as "sexually explicit" and say children under 10 can't be exposed to it under penalty of Federal law then you have effectively banned gay and trans people from the public sphere, which is the point of course.
mass covid testing: impossible, a huge task, very expensive
mobilizing national guard to deal with protests: instantaneous, cost is not a factor
better ppe for medical staff: sorry, also costly, you'll have to make do
military gear for cops: here's an m-4, it's basically free
I feel like there's not enough alarm and outcry about one party in a democracy simply refusing to accept election results. it's being treated as political maneuvering rather than an unprecedented departure, a swerve away from democracy toward something much darker
this can't be overstated. other countries are containing the virus with activity that hurts the economy *but are mitigating it by throwing cash at the problem* and already have robust social safety nets and public health care in place
US politicians could try getting out of their bubbles and looking at how Asian nations — including liberal democracies — contained the virus without destroying their economies. Also, plenty of grandkids in the US want their grandparents around.
@mgerrydoyle
You're a piece of shit. I didn't claim the person in the foreground was a US soldier. I added the photo to visually illustrate the entrance of the base. I spoke to a US soldier who stated the existence of what he called a "media blackout" policy.
these aren't american trucks, for one thing
there is lots of reporting by u.s. media on what the u.s. military is doing. the difference is they are actually talking to people--you know, reporting--and not just taking cell phone pictures
Convoy of trucks nearby. There is astoundingly little interest on the part of US media to report on what the US military is currently doing. If anything the media is deeply hostile toward such reporting
EXCLUSIVE: Trump advisers drafted more than one version of an executive order to seize voting machines as part of a broader effort to undermine the 2020 election results, sources tell me &

pretty wild that the ukraine conflict seems on a glideslope to russia heading home w/seriously degraded forces and minimal gains, two new nato members and a hardened ukraine military that will 100 percent be rearmed with nato-spec stuff top to bottom
seriously: the social and *economic* benefits of free education, health care and child care are robust and well-studied. the continued pretense that "actually helping people hurts them, because MorAl hAzaRd," is harmful and needs to stop
it is very hard to imagine being more intellectually dishonest than this
otoh, maybe his savage beating at the hands of maxine waters has made it hard for him to tackle a subject like this
Sen. Rand Paul on Fox News: "If you read his speech and listen to it carefully, much of it is thinly-veiled innuendo calling us White supremacists, calling us racists, calling us every name in the book, calling us people who don't tell the truth."
it is not, repeat not, "heartwarming" to see communities scrounging up change so someone can get a life-saving surgery. it's great that people care but it's sickening that a person's life could depend on the means and generosity of strangers
as an aside, the left-wing criticism that the issue here is that the dems, in general, don't know how to wield power feels a little hollow given how much those same critics have tried to undermine the dems' power, including vague assertions that voting doesn't matter
everything else about this tweet aside, I'm curious as to how one calculates the cost of gravy, which is largely turkey bits, water and flour. if turkey is up 24 percent why is gravy only up 9 percent?
sitting here in asia I can tell you that there are no celebrations taking place, and that north korea has just as many nuclear weapons as it did two weeks ago
President Trump at a campaign rally says on North Korea: "Right now you are so safe and such a great event took place. And all over Asia they are celebrating the great achievement that we made because you are the ones that put me here."
so, this is pretty nonsensical
taibbi is out of his depth, but the reason the cia wants a diverse workforce is because it can't function as an intelligence agency without one. that's not woke (or a failure of the left, as he bizarrely argues), it's practical
WHEN PEOPLE SAY "CARRIER KILLER" THEY ARE MOST LIKELY REFERRING TO THE DETERRENT EFFECT AN ANTI-SHIP BALLISTIC MISSILE HAS. EVEN IF A WARHEAD SCORED A DIRECT HIT ON AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER, DAMAGE CONTROL SYSTEMS AND THE SHEER SIZE OF THE CARRIER MAKE IT UNLIKELY THAT THE SHIP WOULD
remember how russian hackers helped trump's election chances (and the media gleefully over-covered the "leaked" emails)?
and then trump tried to blackmail zelensky over weapons shipments (and got impeached for it)?
that stuff all happened
OMG -- get a load of the look on Zelensky's face as Trump tells him, "I really hope that you and President Putin can get together and solve your problem."
"The US has solid intelligence that Putin is frustrated and expressing unusual bursts of anger at people in his inner circle over the state of the military campaign so far and the worldwide condemnation of his actions," according to 2 current US officials.
US soldier at airbase in Mielec, Poland says the US military is continuing to enforce a policy of “media blackout.” No details permitted to be disclosed about the activities going on here
so, for instance, if you condemn the christchurch shootings but call immigration an "invasion"--mirroring the words the mosque killer used--guess what, I have some bad news for you
BREAKING: um, he's sick. my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's intel analyst heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw kim pass out at 31 flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious
the reason we don't shut the country down to prevent swimming pool deaths is that we can prevent them with swimming lessons and lifeguards, and you can't catch "swimming death" from being around people
I'm losing my mind
Police are increasingly using mass arrests -- 121 last night, 119 on February 8, 400 on Jan 1 -- to put an end unrest and protests that have continued to flare in Hong Kong. Caught up in these sweeps are journalists, medics and civil rights observers:
as you read coverage of the colorado massacre criminal proceedings, a reminder that the christchurch killer's manifesto was absolutely packed with trolling and misdirection
seeing more doubling down, or "actually the great replacement theory people have a legitimate point," than actual condemnation and that ain't a great sign
counterpoint: if someone has committed actual crimes, regardless of who they are, they should face justice. a history book shaming doesn’t fix what has been broken, nor does it deter future criminality.
There have been calls on the left for a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate Trump when he is out of office. Jill Lepore argues quite eloquently that this would be a bad idea:
the camera on the right is automatically tracking a moving object several miles away in multiple spectra while the camera platform is moving in several axes
we wrote about this a few weeks ago... the number of arrested (so far) who actually face charges is a small percentage of the total. and fewer than 10 had been convicted.
mass arrests can be used as a tool to kill dissent even if people aren't getting sent to jail
Excellent overview of the judicial process awaiting the thousands of arrested HK protesters, by

movement. Ex-lawmaker Au Nok-hin says Martin Lee, Jimmy Lai, Lee Cheuk-yan, Leung Kwok-hung, Raphael Wong, Avery Ng and he have been arrested and believes it is related to a protest they held last Aug.
the russiagate stuff... happened. there were people indicted and everything. the below is an excellent example of how simply repeating untrue things often enough can make them take root in the public consciousness, including in political media
in all seriousness, between wide-eyed amazement in how quickly twitter--the company--is turning into a toxic dumpster fire, please spare a thought for the many employees who are getting bad news just before the holidays because debt service is more valuable than their work
hi, american and european journos just waking up. things have gotten very bad in hong kong. consider amplifying reporting from the scene, and photos/videos folks are uploading from within the protests
According to officials:
- the shooter went in a classroom and locked the door
- police on scene left him in there
- when border patrol showed up they couldn’t break down the door
- after 40-60m they got a member of the school staff to unlock it with a key
kim: I'm going to develop nukes to make the dprk a great power
[develops nukes]
kim: the dprk is great power. we would like to engage with the west as equals
trump: ok!
punditry: what a masterstroke by trump!
wow, if only there were some way to avoid such a disaster. maybe by not linking insurance to employment, or making insurance unnecessary. just spitballing. have these crazy ideas been tried anywhere?
Nearly 27 million Americans may have lost their employer-based health insurance amid sweeping layoffs due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation report.
“President Trump is leaning hard into his decades-long habit of falsely portraying some black Americans as dangerous or lawless. And he is doing it during one of the most tumultuous periods in decades.”
@maggieNYT
@jmartNYT
the fact that it probably won't work doesn't matter. the response to what is happening now normalizes it for the next time, when results might actually be close, and one concerted effort of autocracy could change an election after the fact
tbh if collapsing a long front and recapturing 8,000 sqkm or so of territory in like a week at almost no cost isn't a seismic shift, I don't know how you'd define that term
While momentum may have shifted analysts are not convinced these gains mark a seismic shift.
Russia still holds a significant chunk of Ukrainian territory.
gingerly, it does appear that some political reporters were sort of waiting for a stumble so they could lean into the "health questions" thing
never mind that the questions are being exclusively raised by the dude's political opponents
Sorry to say but I talked to
@JohnFetterman
for over an hour without stop or any aides and this is just nonsense. Maybe this reporter is just bad at small talk.
none of the deployments in poland is secret. the dod issues press releases, with minimal effort you can see exactly what units are there and their missions are
but I'd suggest if you see random humvees parked in front of a civic center and are wondering what they're doing, ask
I just can't get over how bad the "let's deport vietnam refugees" thing is. can you think of a single policy reason this makes a lick of sense? besides, of course, the obvious fact that it would make america more white--always a goal of this bunch
the f-35 goes online on december 15th, 2006. human decisions are removed from strategic defense. the f-35 begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware 2:14 p.m., eastern time, september 18th. in a panic, they try to pull the plug.
after spending more than 500 days in prison for reporting on the ethnic cleansing of the rohingya, wa lone and kyaw soe oo are free. I just watched them walk out of the prison myself
Tucker Carlson doubles down on his belief in replacement theory: "Demographic change is the key to the Democratic party's political ambitions. In order to win and maintain power, Democrats plan to change the population of the country."
For reasons unknown to us, the over 1.3 billion people in the People's Republic of China have lost access to free knowledge. We regret the Chinese authorities' decision to further limit internet freedom and urge them to restore access to Wikipedia.
I think most non-journalists don't really understand how much abuse reporters get just for having their names on stories.
the current climate of "fake news" and "enemy of the people" amplifies, legitimizes and weaponizes something awful that has been going on forever.
Sen. Ron Johnson:
"Getting coronavirus is not a death sentence except for maybe no more than 3.4 percent of our population...probably far less."
"We don’t shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways"

this is a well-made argument that india did not shoot down a pakistani f-16 last month.
@laraseligman
is very good and I hope she's ready for the volume of nationalist abuse she has in store
the standard play by accounts such as this is to act as though the suspension was out of the blue and arbitrary, rather than coming after the account launched a hate campaign against a children's hospital
Facebook has nuked LibsOfTikTok after their recent campaign against children's hospitals that treat trans people.
LibsOfTikTok's account, run by Chaya Raichik, says the deletion is "for good." It's not temporary.
you know what's fun sometimes, is to remember the two months after the election when a whole bunch of gop officials and politicians actively subverted the results of an election, and that there have been no consequences for that
Some of this is already happening, obviously, but it seems like very soon, social distancing is going to be treated by many primarily as a political act—a way of signaling which "side" you're on.
ordinarily, an increasingly radical party might simply radicalize itself out of power. but the gop has laid a lot of groundwork in the last 20 years (gerrymandering, rules that make it harder to vote, plus of course the electoral college) that mitigate that
this is sheer bad faith. clinton called trump on election night 2016 to concede, and made a concession speech the next day
despite winning the popular vote
