Our pastor came to our house this morning for a pastoral visit. It was a indescribable blessing. We drank good coffee and he listened to us share a little more of our story. Then he prayed for us and encouraged us.
A couple reflections:
If you are suffering, depressed, and see only darkness today - you are not alone. Remember:
- Jacob’s limp
- Joseph’s tears
- Job’s agonies
- David’s Psalms
- Elijah’s desire to die
- Hannah’s weeping
- Jeremiah’s lamentations
- Paul’s thorn
- Jesus in Gethsemane
Recently I have been waking up in the morning with more anxiety than normal so I have been praying Jesus prayer from Gethsemene. Many days I can barely make it through the first half without my mind spinning off into a thought. So I start again and keep praying.
Sometimes I fall
There are a few things that are bothering me about a public apology going around online by a well known pastor of a large church.
One, it is a terrible model for others to follow and many will follow it. This is a lead pastor speaking to tens of thousands of people. People will

Overwhelmingly people agree with this message! The handful that disagreed refused to have a conversation.
Children cannot consent to puberty blockers.
@BillboardChris
Reminds me of the child welfare official we met in Laguna Beach who was about to retire. At first she didn’t want to talk but then said screw it the issue is too important not to speak about no matter the consequences!
Here are 10 ways churches can help their pastors serve with joy (Heb 13:17):
1. Pay them fairly.
2. Ensure they are sabbathing. Let them keep healthy boundaries.
3. Provide a generous sabbatical every 4-7 years.
4. Cover 100% of any counseling they and their family need
1. Visitation is a powerful and vulnerable pastoral practice. Our dogs jumped on him and an old watch alarm in a drawer of ours went off. He entered into our daily life just as Jesus enters into our world.
There is a popular parenting principle in the church that says obedience should be immediate and cheerful and if it isn’t we use the rod.
"Delayed obedience is disobedience."
"Obey with a happy heart."
Where does the Bible require this of parents and children?
No anniversary or birthday but just want to say I love this woman and ask you to pray. My wife has battled a whole host of health issues over the years. The last 3 years in particular have been worse than ever. Through it all God has been so faithful and sustained her and us. We
4. If you are a pastor and have considered visiting your congregants I highly encourage you to give it a try. Another way to do it is visit them at work like

3. We felt seen and heard. That is a beautiful thing to experience. He knows us a little bit better and how to specifically pray for us. He will share that with the other elder and prayer team to further care for us.
This morning our church announced that our small network of churches raised over $200k to provide gospel-centered, clinically-informed, affordable counseling to our members!
Here's a tip for your church sabbatical policy:
1.5 days for every month worked.
Write that in the benefits package and require pastors take a sabbatical for refreshment & renewal every 5-7 years.
Trauma not grieved becomes stagnant in depression, numbed through addiction, projected through scapegoating, avoided through spiritual bypassing, spiritualized through a martyr complex. We live in traumatic times. Take care of yourselves. -

Happy 21st birthday to my oldest son! I don’t know a more adventurous, compassionate, and faithful young man. Our country is blessed to have him serving. So proud of him!
Major prayer request!
A pastor friend’s 6yr old daughter had a serious head injury today and just had emergency brain surgery! She is still in very critical condition.
Please pray for Lucy!🙏🏻
A few years ago I woke up one Monday morning and felt something was wrong.
I didn’t immediately know what it was.
I wondered if I was depressed. Burned out. Or maybe I lost my sense of calling.
I couldn’t figure it out so I decided to take some time to pray and get counsel.
Tim Keller and David Powlison’s Pastor’s Self-Evaluation Questionnaire is an excellent resource for pastors and ministry leaders.
Their evaluation is divided into two major sections:
1. Personal holiness
2. Pastoral skills

Going on a sabbatical? Here are a few book recommendations to stir your heart for Christ:
Gentle & Lowly - Dane Ortlund
The Bruised Reed - Richard Sibbes
Lessons from the Upper Room - Sinclair Ferguson
What books would you add?
Health Update: Today, Dad is being discharged from the hospital to receive hospice care at home. Over the past few days, he has asked us to pray with him often. He expressed many times through prayer his desire to go home to be with Jesus. His family is very sad because we... 1/3

My wife had that happen as she was just falling asleep. Person tried to make it to the bathroom but stopped mid-aisle and puked all over the two aisle seat people in front of them including my wife. It was awful! The one time I was thankful for a middle seat!
"A wounded spirit may be the result of diseases which seriously shake the nervous system. Let us be very tender with brethren and sisters who get into that condition."

I had the opportunity to teach through Genesis 3 again this past weekend. I was freshly reminded of God’s incredible mercy towards sinners. In his “kindness He leads us to repentance.” We see that so clearly in how he cared for Adam & Eve in their shame and fear.
I hear from at least a pastor a week that inquires about counseling or sabbatical coaching because they have started having panic attacks for the first time in their life.
Pastoring has always been hard but these last few years have brought unique challenges.
There is a place for public theologians (speaking the gospel to the public, blogging, YouTubing, etc) but the greater need is for pastoral theologians (preaching, personally caring for the people in the local church, visitation, counseling, etc).
Grateful for Chris raising awareness and speaking up for children on university campuses across North America. Here’s a snapshot of the confusion and disorder in our society
I’m curious, how many pastors and ministry leaders who have been serving for 10+ years have never taken a sabbatical? Would love to hear why and what would help you get one?

This is significant! I pray that we will see the end to the madness of gender ideology sooner than later. Too many young people are being harmed to stand by quietly.
The American College of Pediatricians just put out a 🔥🔥🔥 statement calling out all the major medical associations by name for pushing the gender transition craze on kids.
They ask for these groups to "IMMEDIATELY stop the promotion of social affirmation, puberty blockers,
Something that I try to remember when I go into a counseling session is this:
Jesus is present and actively involved in this moment. I don’t bring Jesus into this moment, He is already there. I am joining Him.
5. Give them an annual marriage enrichment stipend to cover a trip away with their spouse.
6. Pay for continuing education, conferences, etc
7. Ensure they have a healthy book budget and ministry meal budget.
8. Pray for them and their family regularly.
9. Thank them often.
I pastored in a gospel-centered church that unashamedly preached about the beauty of the biblical sexual ethic and still 80% of the young adults that regularly attended were taken back when they found out that pre-marital sex was not God’s design! This is not surprising.
It is wild to me the Sabbatical expectations that have become common among evangelicals.
Can you imagine the welder in your church going to his foreman & saying, "Been five years, can I have a 90 day paid sabbatical?"

What a church says on its website says a lot about Jesus and Christianity. It is interesting how many focus on what we do or who we are vs. what Jesus does. Here are a few churches I really appreciate:
1. Grace Bible Church, Cambridge, ON
The doctrine of the imputation of the active obedience of Christ has been one of the most hope-giving, life-transforming, mission-motivating doctrines of the faith. I cherish my Saviors death and life for me.
This past Sunday night, I addressed the resurgence in the Reformed and Reformed-adjacent world of the doctrine of the “imputation of the active obedience of Christ,” and the aggressive push some are making to have the embrace of this doctrine serve as a supposed litmus test of
10. Recognize the incredible complexity of their job. It is the hardest job in the world - dealing with spiritual and physical realities, intense suffering, and all the messiness of sin - representing Christ in our world.
I find that there are a number of people who seek out biblical counseling or therapy that just need a really good friend who can help them:
1. Reflect on your life
2. Recognize God’s grace
3. Practice abiding in Christ
Update for all who have been praying for my wife. The surgery went really well and she is doing great! The surgery was just over 4hrs. The doctor said it was the longest surgery of this kind he has done and he’s done a lot! I am so grateful for your love.
A subtle and dangerous lie that pervades the church in the midst of suffering is that it can be alleviated by “more faith" and Scripture.
Jesus had perfect faith yet was a “man of sorrows” and experienced unimaginable suffering.
The Heidelberg Catechism is the biblical counselors catechism:
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A. That I am not my own, but belong— body and soul, in life and in death to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.
This approach by Adams is abhorant. I can’t believe they would allow to remain in print. As someone who identifies as a biblical counselor I want to make this clearly known.
This is the founder of Nouthetic counseling, now renamed ACBC. Jay Adam's work and books are still used and still the framework for the underpinnings of the movement.
When the foundation is rotten, much of the fruit will be too.
Particularly relevant given the TGC article...
