This morning, I was fired from Lake Michigan Credit Union for my efforts to unionize my branch. Although my coworkers and I were successful in forming the LMCUWA (Lake Michigan Credit Union Workers Alliance), LMCU decided to violate federal law by taking this action.
BREAKING NEWS: State Representative Carrie Rheingans has introduced legislation that would establish MICare, a “Universal Healthcare System for Michigan.”
This is not the end, it is simply the beginning of the next step in the process. I hope that this shows our state and federal lawmakers that now is the time to protect our workers by strengthening worker protection laws.
@ninaturner
We should nationalize every industry where the profit motive shouldnt exist and/or where the industry is vital to the survival of our country. Industries like health care, the railroads, etc.
BREAKING NEWS: The National Labor Relations Board has scheduled a hearing for my case against Lake Michigan Credit Union for illegally firing me after my coworkers and I held a historic election where we established one of the first credit union labor unions in the country.
@macck_attack
I was fired from the South Division Branch in Wyoming, MI. You can contact our Branch Manager there and say a few words of encouragement to my team. I know that my team would appreciate the shown of support
This legislation would finally recognize healthcare as a human right and will be “a publicly funded system, using today’s mix of private and public providers to deliver comprehensive physical, dental, and mental healthcare for all Michiganders with no deductibles, copays, or
@RepSlotkin
@RepRashida
We stand with
@RepRashida
. Our generation doesnt want our tax dollars to fund war and genocide. I myself have attend protests with Christians, Jews and Muslims all calling for an end to the violence. You have a responsibility to stop US weapons from causing civilians harm
premiums. The system will be designed to save Michiganders money by cutting down on excessive administrative costs and treating health care like a right, instead of a for-profit industry.”
I ask that you all contact your state representative and state senator and ask them to support this legislation. Now is the time to fix the broken healthcare system that plagues us. It wont be easy but together, we can get it done
Friends, today I officially filed to run for the open seat in the Michigan state Senate for District 29 in 2026. I will be focused on fighting for policies that have wide approval from the working class, and it’s not difficult to see why.
I am happy to announce that my coworkers and I at the LMCU branch known as South Division have announced our intent to unionize by forming the LMCU Workers Alliance (LMCUWA) and joining the Communications Workers of America.
@umichvoter
Right to work repeal, minimum wage hike to 15+, funding k-12 + higher ed, funding public transportation and housing, transition to universal healthcare, invest in renewable energy, drivers licenses for undocumented, repeal rent control ban, lower car insurance, gun reform, etc
@veenadubal
Thank you for explaining this. As a founding member of
@LMCUWorkerUnion
i am completely disgustes with the way this court has attacked workers
Breaking News: A Regional Director for the National Labor Relations Board has found reasonable cause that LMCU violated section 288 of the National Labor Relations Act when they fired for organizing a union in February of this year.
LMCU has been hit with another Unfair Labor Practice charge after they stopped showing up to bargaining sessions with their workers that unionized the South Division Branch in January.
This is yet another example of why labor laws need to be updated to hold employers accountable
@JStein_WaPo
Employer based healthcare, tax system that funnels wealth to the rich, ever increasing defense spending to a pentagon thay cant even pass an audit
This is a statement from the LMCUWA. We look forward to our union election on Friday January 6th, 2023 and to good faith negotiatons with LMCU’s upper management.
On April 1st, more than 400,000 Michiganders could get kicked off of Medicaid and lose the only access to healthcare they have.
This is an opportunity to move our healthcare system into the future through a state-based universal healthcare system.
When she was a lunch lady, my mom used to get in trouble because rather than refusing to feed the kids who didn’t have the money to pay for their food, she chose to feed every single kid that came her way regardless of the consequences.
This afternoon, I had the opportunity to submit a question to the Governor at an event in which she was answering questions.
She stated her support for legislation that would un-gerrymander county districts so that politicians at all levels are accountable to their voters.
I am proud to support the current initiative to bring Ranked Choice Voting to the City of Grand Rapids.
This initiative will give the people a bigger voice as we transition away from a 2-party system that stifles the voice of voters.
As I continue having conversations with our state elected leaders, I am growing increasingly worried that the disconnect between the people and our leaders is only widening.
Over 50% of people believe we should have a universal single-payer healthcare system in our country/state
New estimates show that Kent County and Grand Rapids need 34,699 new housing units by 2027.
That amounts to over 8,600 new housing units per year.
We are nowhere near meeting that demand.
I will do all I can to work with our legislators to achieve this goal.
Friends today I officially received my 500th signature and qualified for the ballot to be considered as the Democratic nominee for the 29th state Senate district in the 2026 election!
I cant wait to officially launch my campaign early next year!
The people are ready for change!
Happy to share that although I’m disappointed at LMCU’s petty actions, including refusing to voluntarily recognize our union and closing my personal and commissioner campaign bank accounts, the efforts to unionize LMCU have not stopped.
It is an honor to announce that the staff at the South Division LMCU branch have just voted to formally create the Lake Michigan Credit Union Workers Alliance (LMCUWA) and join the Communication Workers of America (CWA).
@MischlerLogan
@ninaturner
You cant have competition in the healthcare “market”. How much would or should someone pay to stay alive? I think its a hell of a question to ask someone
Tonight I spoke at the Grand Rapids City Commission meeting in support of building new housing and the new rental maintenance code that would help address lead concerns in our city
I also offered my support as we begin this term. The only way we fix issues is by working together
I am happy to announce that the Kent County Progressive Caucus was reformed tonight and I was elected as one of the two Co-Chair’s, along with Lily Cheng-Schulting.
I am looking forward to helping lead and develop this caucus as we work to elect Progressive candidates to office.
Today, the LMCU Bonita Beach Road Branch in Florida announced they’re intent to unionize and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts. The labor movement will not be stopped or silenced.
that anonymous twitter 22 year old guy raised $170,000 for state senate and house candidates as a long shot effort, just whatever tiny role I could play in getting a Dem trifecta elected. Not my career, just here for good vibes. Can’t please everyone and that’s okay 🙂
First, we stop people from falling off the Medicaid cliff in April.
Then we pass a public option at the state level.
Finally, we pass universal single payer healthcare into law.
Let’s get it done
I am tired of politicians using this line to not push for what the working class deserves.
“Dont let the perfect be the enemy of the good”?
The working class is standing up for what we deserve. Nothing is perfect but we sure as hell are going to fight for ours
I’m looking forward to joining our auto workers on the picket line this weekend. For Michigan’s sake, I hope the strike is short lived. As someone who used to negotiate international agreements, I know that no one should let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Our Congresswoman endorsing an ex-CIA staffer while openly funding apartheid is sadly, not surprising.
Michigan deserves better, and that is why I am supporting
@hillharper
and why voters are increasingly doing so as well.
We deserve true fighters for the working class in DC
West Michigan in critical in determining the political future of our state. I'm honored to joined with so many other leaders here in endorsing
@ElissaSlotkin
for U.S. Senate.
This morning I met with State Representative John Fitzgerald of Wyoming so that I could share some of my priorities and concerns around what I’m focusing on in our district and what I’d like to see changed at the state level.
The only way we can fix issues is by working together
I have just heard that the Michigan House of Representatives has set a vote for Wednesday to formally Repeal the right to work for less laws that were rushed into law in Snyders administration
The time has come to undo the harm that was done to working families across this state
I’m excited and happy to announce that Grand Rapids Public Schools Trustee Jose Rodriguez has endorsed our campaign to represent District 29 in the Michigan state Senate!
Both Jose and I have worked as substitute teachers and i’m confident that together, we will accomplish alot.
@McdonaldRivet
On the contrary, Legislators had an opportunity to do what the people and voters want, and chose not to. Democrats are in control and theres no excuse for moving these bills at the last minute in the dead of night.
Shows why we will remain one of the worst in gov transparency
@GovWhitmer
Then please support HB 4893, the MiCare bill which would guarantee healthcare as a human right in MI and implement a universal healthcare system
I am proud to say that I won a full 64% of the vote yesterday! It is an honor to be elected as the first Latino to the Kent County Commission. I am so thankful to all of those who voted for me.
@umichvoter
@MWPolitics101
Did Representative Wegela not also run and get elected? They are doing the job they were elected to do. But i’m glad youre supportive of primaries, i’ll be interested to see whether you’ll call for primaries against State Dems that don’t support things like universal healthcare
Reports of companies breaking child labor laws in our County are disgusting and are sadly only the latest example of how far greedy corporations will go to put profits over people as they line their pockets.
We must do all we can to hold companies and executives accountable.
Hill Harper is going to be the only card-carrying union member in the United States Senate.
And if God wills it, I will be one of if not the only union member in the Michigan state Senate
If I'm elected to the U.S. Senate, I'll be the ONLY senator who's a dues-paying, card-carrying union member, and one of VERY few small business owners.
People want to see themselves reflected in their representation, and right now Michiganders don't feel represented in D.C.
We’re about to bailout banks again and meanwhile, student loans haven’t been cancelled yet because of a frivolous lawsuit pending at the Supreme Court.
We have socialism for the rich; rugged individualism for the poor.
My budget includes a heck of a lot to help every student thrive:
📚 Highest per-student funding ever
🍎 Free breakfast and lunch for every public school student
🏫 Continued funding for mental health and school safety
🌳 A free trip to a state park for every 4th grader
Friends I am happy to announce that I have been endorsed by Kent County Commissioner Lisa Oliver-King in my race for the 29th District in the Michigan state Senate!
The only way we will win is by building a wide coalition of people who care about our communities. Thank you Lisa!
I hope that during this next term, our state legislature focuses on making real investments in public transportation and urban walkability. We have an opportunity to rethink what kind of society we want to live in for the rest of this century. Let’s not waste it.
Friends, i’m happy to announce that Lily Cheng-Schulting has endorsed our campaign for the 29th District in the Michigan state Senate!
As Co-Chairs of the Kent County Progressive Caucus, Lily and I are helping to build a movement for and by the people! Thank you Lily!
Just finished reading this piece in the
@MIRSnews
Newsletter from last week Friday.
I couldnt agree more with
@EmilyDievendorf
Democrats have the majority in Lansing. They must not be afraid to use it.
Voters did our job. Do yours and get popular policy done, including HB 4893
LMCU has been hit with another Unfair Labor Practice charge after they stopped showing up to bargaining sessions with their workers that unionized the South Division Branch in January.
This is yet another example of why labor laws need to be updated to hold employers accountable
Michigan needs ranked choice voting reform at all levels of government.
During the 20th century, past generations reformed their election laws around primaries and transparency requirements.
It’s time for our own modern reforms and ranked choice voting must be among them.
From yesterday’s
@MIRSnews
letter:
A Graduated Income Tax would pass in Michigan and boost turnout.
I hope there is momentum to put this on the ballot next year.
The massive Medicaid unwinding starts in April — with millions expected to lose Medicaid coverage.
@philgalewitz
reports on what's to come with the Medicaid unwinding:
Here's what you need to know. ⬇️
I started collecting the 1000 signatures that I need to qualify for the ballot to represent the 29th state Senate district, so if you live in and are registered to vote in Wyoming, Grandville, Kentwood, East Grand Rapids or the south side of Grand Rapids please sign my petition!
In July, it was reported that the state of Michigan offered a single company almost $28 billion dollars in tax breaks over 50 years for them to come to Michigan.
If we can do that, we can create a single-payer healthcare system here. Please donate today!
Health care is a right, not a privilege. No one has fought harder to make that principle a reality than my friend,
@AdyBarkan
.
It was an honor to be with you and your beautiful family at the FDR Four Freedoms Awards. Ady, you urge us all to
#BeAHero
— you are mine! -NP
Today, the Kent County Board of Commissioners voted to create and fund the Kent County Affordable Housing Revolving Loan Fund. This fund has the potential to grow to hundreds of millions of dollards and it was a real privilege and honor for me to vote in favor of this fund.
Michigan now ranks as number 39 out of 50 in health measures.
This is down from number 32 in 2008.
We can do better. It’s time to pass universal single-payer healthcare so that every Michigander can have access to full healthcare without going bankrupt.
I am not a politician.
I am an activist first, elected official second.
I dont play political games, nor do I owe loyalty to a party or the establishments hierarchy.
There are those who seek power for the sake of power. We must shine the light on those who thrive in the dark
I agree with the Governor that the details of this legislation are important and I am heartened to hear that she agrees on the concept.
I will do all I can to help get this legislation signed during this term.
The real problem is that we pay for healthcare through our car insurance.
This is simply incomprehensible and bad policy.
We must pass HB 4893, the MiCare Bill, which will create a universal healthcare system.
By doing this, we will lower our car insurance premiums for all.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration opposes the auto insurance ‘fix’ legislation pending in the Senate. DFIS submitted a letter to the committee yesterday calling for a ‘narrower solution’ and saying the bills ‘swing the pendulum too far.’
#mileg
Putting metal detectors in schools and requiring see-through backpacks is not the answer to gun violence or the presence of guns in schools. I understand the need for parents to see their school administrators taking action, but turning our schools into prisons is not the answer.
I hope we see movement soon on a Driver’s License for All bill in the Michigan state legislature. It’s concerning that it is now mid-March and a bill hasn’t been introduced yet while other states are sending similar legislation to their Governors.
My Michigan state Representative
@JohnforMI
tonight voted to maintain Michigan as one of the worst states in the country for government transparency, as did
@hoodforthehouse
,
@caglanville
&
@RepKristianG
.
This is extremely disconcerting and I only hope they revisit this issue
