Use just the attack or bottom end from a kick drum by duplicating the track and phase reversing one of them. Insert an EQ on one of the tracks and boost or cut at the frequency you're after. Everything except the EQ'd frequencies are perfectly out of phase and completely silent.

If you make a kick drum shorter, the low end will have less impact and the kick drum will be heard as having less bottom end. You can shorten a kick or bass sound to clean up bass heavy mix or increase the legth to have a more powerful mix.
