And while we have your attention on the 38.7k threshold affecting research: this is what the "prestigious" postdoc fellowships at "prestigious" universities pay (1 of the many reasons we've been on strike). -Under these new rules you couldn't even accept an offer if you got one.

UK academics don't usually know this. At the moment, if you fail to get a permanent post in German academia 6yrs post doctorate, you face a job ban - you either go up (v few tenured posts, v long app periods of 1-2yrs, visa holders:more issues), or out.
This is being cut to 3yrs.

Been a rough start to 2021. But on the upside there's the cat. Nearly one year ago I spotted a tiny starving kitten in a building site, who I couldn't get close too because she was so terrified. Not much of that left now.

Omg, I have a story for you. The BL who enjoy ridiculous ID demands towards non-British nationals a bit too much once asked me for a "bank letter" after my passport, id card, driving license, tenancy agreement, enrolment certificate, council tax bill & tax return were not enough.

I honestly haven't missed £400 conferences &£80 dinners.
As a grad student I had £500 travel allowance for my entire PhD. Such fees are completely prohibitive for the not independently wealthy & "refund culture" really doesn't help.
No lessons learned from Covid.

As there is nothing known about how the Turing scheme will actually work, comparisons as to what scheme is "better" are without substance and purely for show.
I just find it so offensive how some people constantly feel the need to express the clearly ill-considered conclusion that I have too many books -- especially when it is so glaringly obvious that the actual problem is that I have too few bookcases.

"JAAAAANE, It's that British Library again with one of those letters" "Jane" with a knowing face gets to work, the printer starts spitting out pages-1,2..6 "get a stamp, that'll make it more official" "which one" "oh take both" signing & stamping ensues. I watch in astonishment.

The reform intends to pressure unis into creating more tenured posts, as it would be in their interest not to lose highly qualified post docs. But it creates no framework for mandating or financing that. It assumes that this is how it'll be interpreted, and thus duly implemented.

Over-dramatic sigh of relief "yes that's exactly what i described earlier: it's *the only legally valid* bank letter." A new reader pass is printed. This took 90 mins. The brit next to me presents a driving license. they have no second ID. A card is printed. Took less than 1 min.

We were doing one of these interviews last week, and the student was talking about how sometimes they found it annoying when we had paper copies of books instead of ebooks. I can get them on the kindle, they said; the books are only £10. How come you can't buy us enough ebooks?
This, I'd it goes through, is catastrophic. Even in the most ideal of circumstances 1) it takes time to create posts& change the currently v convoluted appt syst. If you've got 3 yrs, they can't take 1-2 years to appoint s/o. You'd have to apply for full prof straight out of PhD.

This is also v tied to publications, especially of books. Do they know how long academic publishers sit on book proposals and articles, let alone how long they can take to get published? 2-3years not unusual here, and 6mth review periods for journal articles also not uncommon.
You can't "reform" the bit w the people already most affected by the current situation, without reforming the framework that's meant to accommodate them. They are good enough already. You have to reform the structural environment to give them somewhere to go with their expertise.
@NoreenMasud
They sent me to the nearest branch of my bank. Obvs a "bank letter" (not a statement, that was also not ok) isn't a thing, and I describe desperately what was asked of me. Lady looks at me po-faced: "Is this the British Library?" "Yes" [lady swivels round on chair] ...

I was awful at maths.
Went on to do a PhD at Oxford anyway.
The onslaught on University education under this government is mind-boggling, and chilling.
So yesterday I learned that the Tories have snuck in that if you fail Maths or English GCSE even once you are no longer eligible for Student Loan and can only make it through Uni if you are self funded.

There's been a very neatly orchestrated effort by the UK govt/press to drown out those voices as much as possible. In my research I've monitored press/govt communication for the past few weeks& this method is called "spiral of silence". Create noise, drown out unwanted truths.
Not going to RT but let me tell you as s/o w a degree in Communication&Media Science: it's what's enabled me to spot&understand media manipulation. Me teaching school kids those skills has opened their eyes. Beware of those who don't want you to understand how manipulation works.
