Made a 100% correct call at HP today to end a game. 1 parent threatens to follow me to the parking lot. Another sees me after the game with their kid n points at me n says “we lost to that guy today.” Just go home, take your meds, n blame me 4 ur failures. I couldn’t care less 🤡

Today is what youth baseball should be everyday. Every team competed, left umpires alone, players behaved, and fans were respectful. Had 5 games. This has historically been one of the worst tournaments to umpire. Haven’t had one issue yet in 2 days. Thank you!

A pro scout came up to me after a plate tonight and said he really appreciates when I’m on the plate when he’s scouting b/c he knows it will be a good zone. That makes me feel good. My goal in travel ball is to have a good, consistent zone that scouts can work w/watching players.

I had a coach in Jupiter approach me after I scolded 1 of his players for complaining. A lot of coaches can learn from what he did. Instead of immediately losing his mind n making me run him, he calmly told me to let him deal w/it, and we had a conversation. It was refreshing.

Yeah, on my field this is an ejection. Bat flip up the line near the coaches box, failure to timely run the bases. Unsportsmanlike conduct for recklessly throwing equipment and taunting. Flip your bat towards your own dugout, and run the bases. I’ll compromise, but this ain’t it.

Travel ball was always meant for the elite teams and players. Bring back local rec ball leagues for everyone else. Daddy’s need to stop starting new teams because their kid isn’t starting at SS and hitting 3rd on an “elite” travel ball team.

Regular baseball is over for me finally. A few showcases left. It was a great year 4 me personally. I umpired 331 PG games. I only do what I do
b/c I love the game & the people. I appreciate the coaches and players who support me. A lot of great memories from 2021. Thank you!

2022: 316 PG games, 58 HS games, 4 college baseball games, 24 HS girls softball games. Still 5 weeks left in PG w/10 games a weekend typically. 402 and counting. Done this for 6 years strait. Add another 50 HS basketball games. I’m officiating almost 500 games a year 💪

Had my worst week of umpiring in awhile. Missed 2 calls in the field, blew a responsibility, and was just not good in general. I love being the guy coaches come to and they hope I’m on their games, and I try to give my best, and give everyone a clean, fair game.

I’ve noticed a new trend with this new group of HS catchers. P misses his spot and they get frustrated and give up on knocking it down. If I can’t call a HS game with a catcher that works hard I will not continue to work HS games from behind plate. I’m sure most umpires agree.

To all my plate dodging colleagues that show up saying “I had the plate last night.” Tonight is my 3rd plate in a row b/c it’s my turn with these 3 guys. If it’s your plate, it’s your plate. Period. Very few work more games than me. I never show up without gear. Ever.

Umpires who work in a lot in the summer. Get rid of your west vest, and get a force 3. Take all the extra pads off. Liquid IV or pedialyte everyday before you start. Do not take this GA heat lightly, especially if you are on turf.

Another guy that breathes umpiring is John Poulin. No one works harder than John. My favorite thing about him is he has great fields and great plates. Appreciate the good ones folks. We are losing them to higher levels soon. Look at these sharp mechanics.

New coaches. The scariest coach is the one that knows what he is doing. The coach that will sit back, watch the game with objectivity, and follow appropriate processes if umpires REALLY mess something up. Doesn’t mean never saying anything, just pick your spots. Keep credibility.

I doubt any WM have enough experience with BW to be an expert. WW are no different anyway. They pretend to be submissive and cooperative in the beginning then try to start being bossy over time. It’s a power struggle in every relationship. Have to learn to love the challenge.

I’ve had to strike out a lot of catchers looking lately. I hate striking out catchers, but I cannot disturb the peace of the game to give you a borderline pitch b/c u r the catcher. I have to call my zone ALL the time. Think of us as your friend on Defense and enemy on Offense.

All this does is validate the 80% of college umpires we can’t get to work in summers. They tell me “it’s not worth it.” Incidents like this keep raising umpiring pay, so by all means, keep acting afool. It will just cost more next year to get the same umpires 👌

Had 2 college umpires on a 13u consolation game today @ 8 am on a Sunday. Had to eject 2 fans and a coach over a call that was 100% correct. 1 is a retired SEC umpire. Fans going crazy @ the fence cursing @ umpires, coaches not knowing the rules, etc. 2 sides to the story.

This is how bad the umpire shortage is in HS and MS. College umpires are quitting HS because of the hassle of trying to call for 2 assignors in the spring, and can’t develop young umpires in 13u b/c of crazy parents and coaches. Losing umpires from both ends.

Does the easiest/hardest thing to do which is he swings at the right pitches. He has quick enough hand and great balance in his load to adjust late to offspeed pitches. His approach at the plate is very advanced. Love watching him and good pitchers battle.

Fun facts. The catcher is Johnny Estrada’s son, Drew is going to GA Tech. Really good player. There are rules coming for bat flips next year in NCAA and HS. So we will have a rule next year that will allow this to be an ejection. Haven’t heard exactly what the rule will be.

I can tell you that I’ve been on the field with many championship winning coaches, and the one thing I’ll tell you they all have in common. They treat umpires and other coaches with respect. It’s about the people, not winning and losing. Always remember that.

Im harder on myself than fans or coaches will ever be. I think about the games as much or more than most coaches or players. Analyzing every mistake, so it doesn’t happen again. Officiating is like playing. You do your due diligence on ur mistakes, and move forward.

There’s an umpire I was mean to in HS baseball szn b/c he will not do baseball plates b/c he’s a girl softball umpire. Well it’s girls softball szn, and I’m a baseball guy. Im scheduled w/him for a DH this week, I tell him I don’t do girls sb plates, he sent the games back 😂

Any players that follow me. Don’t look down on officiating. It’s a great way to stay around the game you love, and learn an even higher level of the game. You can be taught how to handle every situation correctly, and take intelligent action to stay safe before and after games.

Ejected a 13u coach yesterday up 10-2, when he called me the 10th player for the other team. He asked me why he didn’t get a warning 😂
Its funny that when teams win they earned it, but when they lose it’s our fault. Give me your trophies too or kick rocks.

Find it disturbing and almost funny that I have to warn teams this year about barking at the P nonstop during his delivery. This is now illegal and was a focal point of our training this year in GHSA. It’s bench jockeying. On top of that, act like young men and not dogs please.

I started out as a travel ball umpire. I started with the 8u Premier league. I have watched travel ball evolve into such a great product on the field. I’m talking about the players n their skill level. Every game I had last year in Jupiter was a well played game. It’s great ⚾️

One day I’m going to share all the messages I get from umpires plate dodging asking me to do plate multiple days in a row. If you don’t want yo do your share of plates, you are not an umpire 🤷🏻♂️ it’s disturbing at this point.

Can’t wait until reality sets in for some of these schools and teams. We are now having large number of officials refusing to work certain places b/c of fan/coach/player behavior. Coaches are going to start getting fired b/c schools can’t get officials. Control your program 🤷🏻♂️

What should never happen is an umpire getting assaulted, or followed to his/her car no matter what. Deal with it the right way. Develop a relationship with assignor or coordinator. Don’t forget to call when a guy does a really good job either.

No, some behavior is inexcusable. Call umpire coordinator, and let him know the umpire doesn’t take your game seriously. Umpires aren’t victims, especially in higher level ball. Just don’t go so far that you lose credibility b4 the call to the coordinator.

One of the best things about officiating right now is that b/c of the shortage and ppl having to work down to officiate games is that I get a lot of time with D1 basketball officials and working HS games with me. I spend the whole game asking them questions in timeouts 😂

There will be new behavior rules when there are no officials in 3 years. I guess games getting moved around and canceled is not phasing them. Keep letting the kids run the sport and assistant coaches will be officiating the games. Good luck with that 👌

Definitely a loaded demarini zen type drop 5 or 10. This is why most kids quit after 13 when they have to swing BBCOR. Those long HR’s become fly outs and they can’t adjust to the failure. Get rid of drop 5’s and 10’s period. They are dangerous and hurt kids development.

Young kids quit umpiring b4 we can develop them. Coaches, help umpires, don’t berate them. When I was starting a few coaches took it easy on me and would talk to me. It helped a lot. This younger generation is sensitive. You can’t go Lou Piniella on an inexperienced umpire.

Lance Parrish was the 4 hitter on the ‘84 WS team, and hit a HR in the series deciding game. Rarely is he mentioned up there with Tram, Whitaker, and Gibson. Gibson hit 2 HR’s in that game to outshine Parrish but the Parrish HR came at a big moment in the game.

My first look at him in person. Dominated the game. Hit a solo HR in a 2-0 game, saved a hit with a great catch in CF, and beat out a bunt for a hit with his speed. His speed was what I was most impressed with. It’s shocking how fast he is.

I dealt with the guy that tried to threaten me. He wasn’t a real threat. He didn’t want any smoke when he seen I was ready to deal with it. It’s just sad to me they don’t understand they take away from the game and the kids with their pettiness. Some of it is part of officiating.

Furthest HR I’ve seen hit on field 3 in person. Kid has been doing this kind of thing since he was 15. One of my favorite things about umpiring youth is watching kids grow as a player through the years.

Parents aren’t teaching loyalty, commitment, and overcoming adversity. Too much daddy ball at lower levels. Instill these things at a young age, so they can adapt better to higher levels. College coaches don’t care where ur kid was ranked in HS I promise you. Job is on the line.

Had my girls softball game canceled today because there were shots fired at the school and they are on lockdown. How are these kids getting access to firearms? We as a society have to do better. I am 100% pro 2A, but can we not make sure angry teenagers can’t get to them pls?
