Mary Lou Retton's daughter has now raised over $300,000 to cover the medical bills of a millionaire conservative who *refused* to buy health insurance. If only there was some way to pool our money to provide health insurance to all Americans. Some sort of Universal Health Care...
There are only 9 states with a larger population than LA county, and one of those states is California. We need to tie the Senate to population, or we need to abolish it. This is not what democracy looks like.
team, let's make a pact to never again say "pre-existing conditions." the entire rest of the world calls it your "medical history" and everyone alive has one.
fun fact: america was moving toward the 30 hour work week right until reagan broke the air traffic controllers strike. we're easily 5x as productive as our parents were, and we don't make 5x their salaries: 40 hours is just absurd.
BIG NEWS: I’ve just introduced legislation in Congress calling for a four-day work week. It’s well past time that Americans have more time to live their lives, and not just work. Retweet if you agree, we need to make this a reality.
Mary Lou Retton is in the ICU, uninsured, with severe breathing problems. This is awful, and I wish her a speedy recovery. Omitted from most coverage is that she is a millionaire Republican, willfully uninsured, likely unvaccinated, and I'm guessing COVID positive.
@mjbjes
same, friend. i'm an active proponent of universal health care, but in the meantime i pay for my insurance so i never need to rely on handouts from strangers. for a republican to ask for these sort of handouts is a level of hypocrisy i was not prepared for.
@LT_Greenwald
damn. i'm sitting over here in my 1 bedroom rental, paying monthly for my health insurance, and she lives in a palace and her daughter is asking for thoughts, prayers, and cold hard cash. wth.
@yunatalks
no, no they do not. i once pointed out that i was the only woman in a meeting of 35 people, and the men were *shocked.*. as if we weren't all in the same room.
NEW: Splitting 5-4, the Supreme Court temporarily blocks a federal judge’s injunction that would have made it easier to vote by absentee ballot in Alabama during the pandemic. The court’s four liberals noted dissents.
this is exactly how we eradicated polio: we made the vaccine mandatory and we administered it in public schools. folks can opt-out of vaccines as long as they understand they are forfeiting their right to enter public spaces.
This is alarming: CA's new COVID surge would have put many counties back into the most restrictive tier under our reopening blueprint.
It's time we do something uncomfortable: make vaccination mandatory—at schools, gyms, hospitals, workplaces, etc. Thread—

here. We registered 1.5 million voters last year and spent just under $200k on voter reg. So agreed: there are better uses of money than this presidential campaign.
we could solve the minimum wage debate *today* by tying it to the GS scale used to set military and government salaries. there is literally no need to debate this: we already have a data-driven system used to set millions of salaries, that is adjusted for region.
@fuckyouiquit
I once spent about an hour explaining health insurance and student loans to some European colleagues. One finally asked, “how does anyone get to be middle class with all those bills?” Bingo. Sigh.
cats are the only thing i love more than democracy, and i'm thrilled to announce that have joined the as board secretary.
@feederofcats
has big plans and a work ethic to match. donations are tax-deductible. (i am so friggin excited about this)
I'm SO excited to announce that I have officially founded Friends of Bear Cat Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit org. This has been a long time coming and would not have happened without the amazing support you all have given me and the cats I take in ❤️
@SMartMe21
i prefer that the citizens of the US hold the power, and if those citizens happen to be congregated in certain areas, then it would logically follow that democratic power would also be in those areas. this isn't about geography, this is about population density.
If it's safe to mail tax refunds, social security checks, stimulus checks, draft cards, prescription drugs, driver licenses, credit cards, US passports, and the actual ID you would use to vote... then it's safe to vote by mail.
@JortsTheCat
@BetteMidler
no,
@BetteMidler
, no! not everyone can breastfeed. for some moms or babies it just doesn't work, and you also need time, and space, and wellness, and all of those things. even if everyone could breastfeed, formula is so helpful for the babies and the mom. <3
for real, y'all. feinstein's seat is why the republicans poured tens of millions into hijacking the governorship with this recall nonsense. they can't win in a fair fight, but they sure as fuck can win with this backdoor bullshit. Vote NO on the recall.
For folks not inclined to vote in the
#CArecall
, this is not an implausible scenario:
1. Larry Elder wins because of low turnout.
2. Dianne Feinstein becomes ill or dies, giving Elder an appointment to the Senate.
3. Control of the Senate flips back to Mitch & the GOP.
@3vanSutton
my blocklist grows. as you noted, it is wild watching people be triggered by the idea of universal healthcare, as they chip in over $300,000 to cover the medical bills of a multimillionaire.
Crypto bros need to stop demanding FDIC insurance and government bailouts. Your “currency” is decentralized, bro. Banks are not involved in your ponzi.
Today on international women's day i would love to hear from straight women how their lives are improved by dating/marrying straight men. As a lesbian, it seems to me that straight men make your lives harder. But I'm eager to be educated!
Voter turnout expert here chiming in to say that texting 10 friends and reminding them to vote is highly effective. Ballots must be postmarked by Sept 14. No stamp needed. I'm personally voting NO on the recall because it's an undemocratic power grab by bad actors.
Hi friends, the CA recall election is our Brexit. Seriously, it’s the same size economy with potential reverberations across the world. The polling is actually close. It’s not enough to just vote NO, it’s too important. Spend 10 minutes today and text ten friends:

Y Combinator has its CEO personally sitting in on interviews to make sure no one is ever hired or given funding if they have any critique of neoliberalism.
@NK_Adjei
@JoeSondow
so my team and i ran a direct mail voter reg campaign. mailed 10s of thousands of forms to recent movers. i'm still getting the return to sender mail, six months later. when the fuck did those time-sensitive forms arrive?
i'm really going to need political "experts" to stop defining "young voters" as anyone under 50. as wonderful as it is to be a young voter again, this is really fucking up the data.
@feederofcats
my 19.5 year old baby is currently refusing to eat the brand and flavor of cat food she's eaten exclusively for years now. so she says HI JAZZ, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
Today I confirmed that the number of House Representatives was last changed in 1924, and that the House can readjust this number at any time. 2024 will be a great time to reapportion the House and strengthen our democracy.
@ArmandDoma
the words "settler colonial process" do not make sense in this context. israel is not a colony, and refugees are not settlers. i feel like i'm going mad at the moment.
I recently confirmed that I registered just over 650,000 people to vote in 2018 on just over $200k. This isn't my personal best (that was 105,000 on $5300 in 2012), but the cost per form does rise as the numbers increase. Ask me anything about reg and I'll do my best to respond.
everyone, meet mabel. she started about a week ago. i think she's on the program design and evaluation team, which means she has a phd. she's only a few weeks old, so that's *really* impressive.
@ironmikevoss
@nope_its_lily
my cat and i both had ultrasounds one year. same machine. same area of our body. he required a bit of a shave first. his bill was $400 and I paid cash. mine was something like $6000, billed to insurance, maybe more. i almost asked the vet to do my ultrasound instead.
In post-Dobbs America, some girls can travel hours to get an abortion; some can't. This is the story of one of them.
She was raped. The nearest abortion was nine hours away. Now, she's a mom. Soon, she'll start seventh grade.
the world is burning and things are challenging right now, but i woke up to a text letting me know that a $1,000,000 donation had just hit the VoteAmerica bank account, and that is truly some good news.
Montana passed a bill yesterday that makes it a crime to dress as a different gender than you were assigned at birth, which effectively makes it illegal to be trans
The current Republican argument against holding criminals accountable is that accountability will only incite further crime. They are literally saying aloud, if you arrest us, our fellow Republicans will commit a greater number of even more violent crimes.

the cat has me thinking about shareholder activism. how many union pension funds hold shares of poorly behaving companies, like
@Starbucks
? Union folks, hit me up: there is something here we can work with.

@fuckyouiquit
has anyone told you yet about the joy of an in-network hospital that employees out-of-network doctors? not that you would have anyway to know before the $3000 bill arrives.
These threads are painful to read, but necessary. The police don’t keep you safe: you’re thinking of the social safety net we keep eroding so we can give the police more money
The NYC subway shooting provides a useful moment to reflect on one of the least discussed aspects of the policing debate: the incompetence of U.S. police.
JFC,
@AOC
isn't even 30 yet. as someone who is over 40, i feel like we all need to go to DC and protect her. form a literal shield around her so she can continue to work as a public servant without worrying that her life is on the line.
calls for unity from the folks who incited an insurrection and have spent the past 40 years denying the basic humanity of their fellow citizens should be ignored. accountability will unite us, not further compromising our values.
@AriBerman
30 have passed, almost 500 bills have been introduced. AZ republicans introduced a bill that would let them overturn the popular vote. it failed in committee, but the fact that they even tried is chilling.
@sarahehunt01
@feederofcats
we will all work for haley soon enough. once we get democracy back on the rails we can focus on our true passion: rescuing cats.
