I'm happy to announce that, starting today, I'm joining PHLY to be their lead Philadelphia Flyers beat writer.
We're aiming to be the one-stop shop for all Philly sports, covering every local sports team with the best articles and podcasts in the city. Can't wait!
I'm sorry, if you're from Boston and still want to present yourself as a tortured sports fan, you'll have to answer to this for at least the next 10 years.
You're better off just embracing the sports fan villain role.
You're the opposite of cursed. Accept it.
I find it utterly bizarre that the Gritty story is written as if the character of Gritty is a sentient being that can be charged and arrested with a crime and not a dude in a costume with an actual name.
The Braves series felt personal, you just wanted to see the Phillies stick it to those losers. I have nothing against the Diamondbacks. They're just in the way.
The Flyers bought a Gritty billboard in Toronto for the playoffs that can be seen on the way to the Scotiabank Arena because of course they did

The hard truth is this: America didn't really start taking COVID-19 seriously until the sports leagues canceled their games. That's why player strikes/protests matter. Because sports are so ubiquitous in our culture that when they do something big, you have to pay attention.
Keith Yandle said that Carter Hart is one of the first goalies to actually ask him about Yandle always saying "thank you" in the middle of a play to his goalies when they play the puck behind the net for him. "Are you saying thank you?" "Yep!" "Well, you're welcome!"
Jamie Drysdale said he planned to go home during the break, not on a teammate trip.
"Then everyone was like, 'What are you talking about?' I literally didn't have to do anything. They booked the ticket for me, they set up the hotel, everything. I literally just had to show up."
The fact is, the PHI org & Ivan Provorov's own teammates wanted last night to be about supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
Instead, Provorov centered himself, & made it impossible for his teammates to make the statement they wanted to make.
Can't imagine they're happy about it.
The thing that I keep coming back to today about Claude Giroux is that for an entire generation of hockey fans in Philly -- basically anyone in their mid 20s, and maybe even up to early 30s -- Giroux IS Philadelphia Flyers hockey. This truly feels like the culmination of an era.
The whole point of a team wearing Pride jerseys is to send a unified message that LGBTQ+ people who like the Flyers are seen & welcomed, that the team supports them & has their back.
Provorov made it abundantly clear that he didn't want to see or welcome that group of FANS.
Gonna step away from the comment section and Twitter for a while on this one, for obvious reasons.
But if you're angry at me for laying out the issues with Provorov's decision & what message it sends to LGBTQ+ hockey fans, you're welcome to unfollow.
The fact that Carolina was willing to take on three more seasons of 37-year old Brent Burns at $5.28 mil per year but weren't willing to give Tony DeAngelo the $5 million per that he wanted says something...
Flyers Pride Night on Tuesday was meant to be a show of support for the LGBTQ+ community -- from the entirety of the PHI organization.
Ivan Provorov's decision to not participate in it contradicted the entire message, and was an embarrassment for the org:
Per a source, I'm told that is looks like Matvei Michkov is indeed going to terminate his contract with SKA St. Petersburg. It looks like he's coming to Philadelphia this season.
Voracek on the fans: "We kinda always had a love/hate relationship, but they are really passionate. It was a pleasure to play in front of them. It was fun sometimes to hear to shoot the puck about 17 times a game."
Not sure why I didn't realize this in the moment, but Drysdale is starting with a strong base of fan support solely because he's the guy they got for Gauthier & rooting hard for him will feel to Philadelphians like they're sticking it to Gauthier.
Fans in this city run on spite
Suspect you're going to hear a lot about how the Caps looked lethargic and out of sync and clearly not at their best. Just like you heard the same things about the Bruins on Sunday. Perhaps PHI is just very good at getting teams out of sync via relentless disruption & pressure?
Carter Hart did not have a good game tonight.
Carter Hart is not off to a great start this season.
Carter Hart is an extremely talented young goalie.
Carter Hart will most likely be fine in the long-term.
All of these things can be true.
The NHL may be banning the use of Pride Tape during Pride Nights.
But Scott Laughton expects he'll still use it regardless.
"I’ll use the tape – if I have to buy it myself, I will. Go about it that way," he said.
My story:⬇️
The funny thing is that if the Niners players would have just accepted the fact that the Eagles team last year was better than they were I probably would have rooted for them this year
Per NHL Edge, Owen Tippett now has the fastest top speed of a single player this season in the NHL at 24.21 mph.
Gonna take a wild guess that it happened on this particular play. It was staggering in person how fast Tippett was moving here.
The week NASCAR is having is wild. The pre-race stuff before Sunday's race, Bubba Wallace driving a BLM car owned by Richard goddamn Petty, & now this. They're absolutely pissing off a lot of longtime fans. Good on them for doing it anyway.
Regardless of how this game and this series ends up, Carter Hart is so legit. Don't know how you can watch him in these playoffs and not come away convinced he's going to be one of the standard-bearers at this position for the next decade.
Giroux gets first star, gives one last salute to the crowd, and heads up the tunnel, possibly for the last time as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Tonight is the Flyers' annual Pride Game, obviously a cause very important to Scott Laughton. He said yesterday, teammates Joel Farabee, Cam Atkinson and Comcast Spectacor CEO Dan Hilferty went with him to meet with members of the LGBTQ+ community who will be part of the night.
That this ends with Alex Meruelo -- who apparently will get a five-year exclusive monopoly on trying to bring hockey back to Arizona -- didn't even show up for the final Coyotes game speaks volumes.
Awful he'll be able to hold their expansion chances hostage for 5 years.
Addiction is just so horrible. The Hayes family were under no obligation to reveal what they did today about Jimmy, but doing so only highlights what a tragedy his passing was.
People in Philadelphia are going to be excited about baseball again. For anyone who spent their summers at CBP between the years of 2007-2011, you know how cool of a thought that is. No better place to be in the city on a summer night during those years.
This time last year, Nolan Patrick wasn't even practicing due to his migraine disorder. Oskar Lindblom was still in the early stage of his cancer treatments. They're both in the lineup today, and I just have to say, that's pretty awesome. Sometimes, things do turn out okay.
If that was Giroux's last game with the Flyers -- and it very likely was, that was certainly the vibe today -- they did it right for him. Organization put on a great night, fans were loud and appreciative, and his teammates came through to get him a win.
Нападающий Матвей Мичков покидает СКА и в межсезонье присоединится к клубу НХЛ «Филадельфия Флайерз». Права на хоккеиста в КХЛ закреплены за петербургским клубом.
Given the tenor of the fanbase and the state of the Flyers, a change at the top was basically inevitable. That said, it's wild that ownership let Fletcher run the trade deadline & sent him out to talk to season ticket holders last weekend only to fire him a week later.
What a win by the Flyers. Facing one of the best teams in the league, on the road, with them rested and the Flyers having played last night, and without Sean Couturier (and Jamie Drysdale).
And they won anyway.
Dorion - we owe it to our players to do something to help the push. Our players said please do something. I also made a promise to Claude Giroux to get something done.
Gostisbehere: "It's just straight not good enough right now. We're letting guys just fucking absolutely beat us up in front of the net. It makes our goaltenders look like absolute shit, and it's not fair."
It is very funny that whenever there's a post-whistle scrum and an unknown Flyer is at the bottom of the pile, it all untangles itself and invariably it is Travis Konecny
Can confirm that Matvei Michkov did secretly visit Voorhees on Friday morning to meet with the Flyers brass.
Then met a much bigger Flyers group including all of the scouts this week in Nashville.
The interviews, needless to say, went extremely well.
PHI hires Tortorella, & then saddles him with RHDs bad at D & buys out a good defensive wing. Torts says the PHI room is "splintered," yet they dump their highest character player & replace him w/a guy who was kicked off a team.
This plan makes no sense.
I love most of the players from this Phillies era, but Rhys was different because he went through The Shit with us. I'm not saying anything that everyone else isn't saying, but it's a bummer he can't be part of this anymore, even if it was absolutely the right move to let him go.
After trading away one of their better defensemen the day before, with an all-rookie recent recall third pair, the Flyers still go into Sunrise and win in regulation against the best team in the NHL.
Wild stuff.
There's something darkly comedic about Flyers fans dreaming in the lead-up to the deadline that they'd trade Giroux for assets and then sign him back in free agency, and Chuck Fletcher does exactly that but with Justin Braun.
AV: My one disappointment in tonight's game is that Oskar had his first game back at home, but couldn't play it in front of Flyers fans who could give him the big cheer he deserved.
Ristolainen said he wishes he had Tortorella as his head coach when he was 18. Feels like his game has taken big strides under him, particularly in terms of killing plays and d zone work.
Amazed at what the Flyers have done these last 5 months. Re-signed Ristolainen. Traded Giroux. Bought out Lindblom. Traded for DeAngelo. Signed Deslauriers (to a 4-year deal!). Passed on Gaudreau.
It's like they're actively trying to tick off the informed section of the fanbase.
Giroux: "That video... I wish they would have showed the video at the end of the game, because to show the video and then go for a shift right away, that was tough."
Kinda shocked that a trade of this magnitude is happening before the Cup Final is even finished. Usually GMs wait until post-Final to make their big moves. Heck, his president of hockey ops is still calling games for TNT!
Briere not messing around here.
It was my opinion that Shayne Gostisbehere's time in Philadelphia had run its course & that he needed to be moved this summer. But man, he was a fun player to watch when he was on his game. Was a bright spot in a very dismal era of Flyers hockey, and hope he's remembered as such.
I wanted to share some news with everyone:
Today is my last day at The Athletic.
This was my decision, to be clear. I’m so grateful to The Athletic for giving me my first chance to cover the Flyers full-time, & I’m incredibly proud to have been part of TA for 6 great years.
A lot of people -- myself included -- felt like the Flyers were foolish for not rebuilding last summer and putting themselves in a better position to grab a star in a loaded 2023 draft.
They didn't tank. And they got one of those stars anyway.
A key distinction between Philadelphia fans & most other fanbases:
When a Philly team loses a tough game: "the whole team sucks, they're chokers, the coach is a joke, total embarrassment"
When a lot of other cities do: "we got cheated and it's everyone's fault except our team"
No shock to me that Drysdale came down with something. It's almost like running yourself ragged for four days straight and dealing with a super stressful life event weakens your immune system.
There were some problems with my mic in the zoom call with Voracek after I asked my question, created an echo. He stopped talked, said "For fuck's sake, Charlie!" Then cracked up.
Always a fun guy to cover.
Hayes said that if this is the end of his time in Philly, he'll cherish Giroux's 1000th game and playing with his buddy Keith Yandle. But his top memory was in the bubble, when Oskar Lindblom came back for G6 of the Isles series. Says he'll remember that the rest of his life.
Hart: "Guys are testing positive with no symptoms or mild symptoms. I mean, the league's got to find a way to change that. I mean, we're either going to keep playing shorthanded all season long, or games are going to keep getting postponed. I think's a joke. It's got to change."
It turns out the Flyers are only going to have to wait one year for Michkov. Originally, the expectation was 3 years.
Obviously, only time will tell if Michkov lives up to the hype. But Briere's "big swing" at last year's draft sure looks to be paying off.
The Flyers gave up the sixth-most goals in the NHL last year, and their response from a roster standpoint appears to be bringing back their entire defense corps (including Nick Seeler & Kevin Connauton) and adding Tony DeAngelo to it.
It's pretty easy to see why fans are ticked.
Nolan Patrick said that he's leaned on his teammates during this recovery process, and that they've been great. Said Chris Stewart in particular is someone he's talked to a lot. Outside the organization, he's talked to Dan Carcillo too.
Especially for Flyers fans in my age range, Wayne Simmonds is a franchise legend. Glad to see the Flyers are doing him right and honoring him like this as he retires.
A lot of Flyers players wearing Pride Tape for warmups on Pride Night. I can see Laughton, York, Foerster, Tippett, Farabee, Sanheim, Konecny and Atkinson FWIW. Could be more.
If a guy doesn't want to play for you, and won't talk to you to give you the chance to try to change your mind, not really much else the Flyers could do.
The key for them now is Drysdale. They develop him into an impact first-pair D-man, it's fine. They don't, & hoo boy...
I think it's abundantly clear the Flyers are frustrated with Gauthier. Briere was professional, but didn't hold back with info from their perspective. Torts was Torts. Even Sanheim basically said if he didn'twant to be here, we don't want him.
And they have every right to be.
I'm not saying this to be mean, as it's your choice whether you want to subscribe or not. But uh, I'm not going to stop posting articles that I've written at the publication that I write for?
Really gotta hand it to the police for responding to protests about police brutality by performing daily if not hourly acts of police brutality and getting caught on tape doing it. That'll certainly prove to the world that the protests aren't necessary.
