The larger issue is that the opinion is fairly racist as if being from Midwest America is the only thing that matters. She then goes on and mocks Brazil (where they primarily speak Portuguese) talking about learning Spanish. Just an ignorant situation all around.

Realizing that i don't really want to be an intimidating opponent. I'd rather my opponent and I both have a good time and that they're comfortable and happy. If people find me intimidating that's fine but I'm not gonna make any effort to be. If anything I try not to be.
Don't really have any feedback from the outside on this but between randomly getting shakey hands and coming off as flustered at points where i'm not, i think i'm probably like a 3. I honestly don't know though.

You should not shuffle their deck, you should stop them and call a judge, if you shuffle their deck then a key piece of evidence “oh dang their hand is insanely good” gets messed up

I watched the coverage of two matches this weekend (my teams and ashe’s) and the commentary basically felt like someone was doing a dramatic reading of MTG Twitter with a game of magic in the background.

I had somebody do a remarkably similar cheat against me once at an SCG (picked up a non-land with his w6 while I was looking down to get dice out) and was told by the very experienced and well respected head judge that the cheat was too obvious to be intentional

the "hard decks" are generally just decks where you need to learn some mechanics to play the deck competently. Where as a typical draft deck is hard to play cause who on earth knows if i'm supposed to be trading these 2/2s

It's wild how, if i'd won the last game of magic i played this weekend instead of losing it, I would be qualified for Minnie, Dallas and i'd have a chance to make it to Barcelona. Instead I am qualified for nothing and am 0% to qualify for any of those.

I’m not sure I like this framing. I find playing a game for stakes (other incentives) to be very fun. So why am I playing a tournament, I’m doing it for fun, but the incentives are part of what makes it fun. (I also cube for no stakes probably more than once a week on average)

Format is great. Format support remains awful. You can't have a rotating format with events that matter one season a year and expect people to buy in and play it.

Those general thoughts would be better in the dead time between matches, and it would be nice if the people doing commentary could at least pretend to care about the game state, the decisions players make, or the outcome of the match

It's a lot about tone and social cues. At more casual competitive events (FNM/prerelease) I do make an effort to gauge how experienced my opponent is and then play to match that. I think the issue is that some kinds of people are assumed to not be part of the in group

This is extremely real. Competitive players (particularly good/experienced ones) figure out real quick i know what i'm doing. Randos at FNM or prerelease are way more likely to condescend.

I do think that the hard part of playing magic at an elite level is much more about the complexity of the core game engine, and that part never really goes away, and the complexity of the deck you're playing doesn't matter that much
