Mom adjusts her sari, the color of marigolds, puts on her coat, and we head back to the car. Stop for gas, which is a lot cheaper here than in Chicago, only $2.83/gallon. The drive on Southern State is nice, colorful leaves still on the trees.

The priest was in the vehicle behind the one which was hit. Like other priests, he suggests I come more often when I'm in town - but, to his credit, his sales pitch was different.

The puja is over, Mom and the priest make some small talk before we head out. The priest is just four years older than me. Turns out, he was on the pilgrimage in northern India earlier this year where we had a relative killed when a boulder hit their bus.

He actually has a good voice, and unlike Mom, can carry a tune. I walk around - and while it is a holy place, it's also practical. All the kitchen gear is packed in the back.

The three of us are the only ones in the temple. The puja lasts for about an hour. The two of them are seated in front of the deities, I'm seated in the back, not on my phone. Just taking it in.

In my experience - priests have two hairstyles - mostly bald with a few wisps of hair around the edges. Or, a full head of curly, unkempt hair that grows in every direction. This guy was the latter.

Well, we did have to stop at the grocery store on the way, cause she want to pick up some fruits as an offering. We get to the temple, and we're greeted by the priest - a black Puma hoodie over saffron robes.

Mom asked me to drive to her to temple today. It's been a year since my brother's myeloma diagnosis. He's been through a year of intense treatment, and she wanted to give thanks. I said sure, better than taking her shopping.
