Colours in for a living; hardly ever stays in the lines. Bristol born. International IB geography teacher. Examiner. Opportunities come to pass not to pause.
Here is an ongoing list of competitions for students to enter - some many not necessarily jump out as 'geography' but what's stopping your students entering science and English compeitions when using a geographical theme?
Is it ok to ‘just’ want to be a teacher? Got told today I’m selling myself short as a bog-standard teacher. Kind of upsetting in all honesty when people use terms like that
🧵 I’ve wanted to be a teacher since 1994 after undertaking my geography coursework on the settlements of Rocinha. Today I got to visit. I WILL START OFF BY SAYING - STOP TEACHING ABOUT THIS FAVELA FROM YOUR TEXT BOOKS
Well here it is...the final piece. A booklet for the 'Danger of a single story' unit on Africa for KS3. Fancy teaching Africa through a decolonised lens? Feel free to download the booklet or individual resources here

It is…and then I also think about the mother driving her 16 year old daughter to his house. She is complicit in this ~ we can all say what we would do as parents but my child would not be driven by me to a 31 year old man’s house.
@LateefSaka
I live in Istanbul…you need a visit. Also try Lokum…I’m pretty sure that’s what Edmund was eating when he said ‘Turkish Delight’ 😂 the chocolate and nut version is delicious.
I have sweet closure today. The ex-line manager who made my life hell, told me that students were more important than my 8 month old baby & refused to let me go on a free period to take her to the Drs (she ended up in hospital with RSV the same night!) has been made REDUNDANT
If you’re worrying about wearing a mask in the classroom & kids not hearing,don’t be,you can buy a mic headset from Amazon.
If you’re worrying about being cold because you’ve got all the windows open, don’t be. You can buy thermals from Primark.
PS this is teaching in Yemen.

Review your tweet ‘she didn’t have the guts’…do you know her mental health issues? Would she have felt bullied to stay home head if on the phone?

👆🏻this. My daughter first got called the n word when she was 5 years old by another kid who shouted it down the corridor at her. Thankfully her teacher heard the whole thing & reported it.
This is the craziest tweet I think I’ve ever read from an educator. Absolutely no way is my job in secondary harder. Hats off to all EYFS & reception teachers and thanks for all you do! I couldn’t do my job without you teaching them to read.
Today I received the best news in my teaching career. The girls that I teach from Afghanistan were repatriated back to Turkey. Relieved is an understatement
My timeline is FULL of teacher in England who are positive for COVID. Not 1 of my international teachers have reported the same. That just shows the shambles of teaching in England
Gender and geography is often missed out at Key Stage 3. Yes we teach about sport or coflicts but do we go into enough detail about how different genders are affected by the same events? Really excited to have produced a booklet, scheme of work and slides to share.
My Year 7 class are working on their alternative pages from Prisoners of Geography. Instead of Marshall’s ‘hindered by geography’ this student has decided to use the word ‘blessed’

Today was so weird. Got to school, given a massive Turkish breakfast, had my photo taken and…that was it. No review of results, no belittling by SLT…just time to get on with my planning.
Feel free to add to this thread but here are some things you can do to decolonize your geography curriculum:
1) stop teaching ‘Africa’ as an example. It’s a wide and varied place with excellent innovations and not your poverty hotspot!
Yesterday I tweeted about the need for students to have the opportunity of having resources in their first language for assessments at KS3 (as well as access to English). Here is a short video on how to translate your google docs

No. My mum has been a widow for nearly 30 years. My dad died of cancer at 39. She never remarried and has paid basic tax her whole life because of a naval pension (death in service). That winter fuel payment is the difference between keeping warm or not this winter.

I’m watching this tweet from Turkey - she’s about to go viral. EXCELLENT customer service from your Mum and it sounds like this could be branch of the month by the replies. Please do nice things for this lady

@Miss_Snuffy
Whilst I may not agree with you on everything I am whole heartedly behind you on this. As a mother of a black child living on a majority black island I don’t want my daughter listening to this type of music. Keep on doing what you believe in! You have a lot of support l.
@EnglandNetball
I think you will find it is the others that you need to work with. Stop expecting Black women to make you comfortable for your mistake (not once but twice). You all need some serious EDI training. Really, really disappointed your social media team.
@Samanth68350322
It gets easier when they can entertain themselves - so around 3 😂 but seriously there is an issue with your school if you are working after 6. Stop it. Single parent here. Meal prep. Get a cleaner. Don’t take work home. Your baby is more important than working in eve
@rebeccarosss
What I’ve really noticed about the responses from members of your school to the original tweet is the utter class you’re displaying. You’re doing better than most adults in how they respond (especially some teachers). Great kids, you should be proud of yourselves.
Eeek my baby starts school on Monday. The dress was 10 inches too long. Just massive. I took two to the tailor tonight at 7 pm. He took them in, up and moved the pockets up in an hour for £8!
@VickiYardley91
@lisaAmakeup
Did you have to @ her? Why do you care what she is doing in her personal life? We, as people not in her day to day life have absolutely no clue what she went through. We have the media fishing for titbits that they can spin any story and you bought in to it.
Paper from June 2023 from Cambridge. Q is ‘Explain why arrival of large number of migrants from LEDCS may cause problems for countries in Europe’…and here is said mark scheme. And we wonder why we have a problem with racism when we have to teach like this.
@ScottPughsley
You’re right they are the responsibility of the parents but in answer to your first question: probably at work!
A more important question would be: where are the organised activities for these kids to do? What happened to social clubs like I had in the 80s/90s?
@amyjeangraff
@itsbethbooker
Oh my goodness…this cannot be the tweet you’ve sent after she told you she is not available for interviews and she is worried about losing her mum. Have some bloody compassion
I love this revision game of connect 4. This one is for rivers. You can find resources here. Students have to answer the question correctly to place the counter.

First five lessons done for my gender and geography scheme of work for Year 9. I am just getting more dissapointed with the world everytime I create a new lesson...

Well thanks England…I’ve got my crumpets, cheddar, shredded wheat and a whole library of new books and Cadburys to take back…and a million and one ideas to take back from the conference
The GA conf was worth every $ spent. The conference was fantastic. If you came as an ECT please do apply next year to talk, us old timers would love to coach you(if needed) & free up the space for fresh voices.

@JujuliaGrace
My daughter wears a mask all day from 8.45 until 3pm. She’s 3 years old and has been doing it since 2.5. Here she is at school. No one in her class has refused to do this.
If anyone still uses 'fill in the missing blank' or wordsearch in their lessons (not afraid to admit I do ;) ) then chat gpt can do that for you also. I enered the transcript from a
@timeforgeog
video on drainage basins and voila

Do you remember that collaborative planning last week that I did with another member of
@DecoloniseGeog
well here is the finished scheme of work with an end of topic assessment which asks students to critically evaluate Prisoners of Geography.
@MissNS_Eng
I think that’s the reality though. It certainly was for me as a PGCE student - when we used to have to write lesson plans used to take me about 3 hours to write just one 😂😂😂

Because Iranians always sing the anthem. This anthem does not represent Iran but the Iranian regime. They are showing silent solidarity for the women at home

Meeting up with a friend from Australia in New York and she’s bringing me a new map. I first discovered these when I went to Oz in 2017 and have wanted one ever since.
