Met new team in person. “Ma’am.” “Sir, actually works better for me.” Rest of day, it was “sir”. It wasn’t a discussion or fight. I didn’t get a million awkward questions or weird looks. It just was. Sometimes, it’s easy and I’ll never take for granted when it is.

If anyone wants an example of how to ask a person’s pronouns correctly: This week while I was getting scrubs with a new med student they asked me if they could ask what pronouns I used. It was done in private and asked simply. It’s really that simple.

Apparently folks have forgotten you can measure a BP by palpation (at least a systolic). This way you can assess a BP in the field, in a noisy environment, on a plane, with just a BP cuff. No stethoscope required. How to, in the next tweet.

I will never understand. Calling someone by their correct pronouns costs nothing. But the person whose pronouns get ignored faces all the potential pain and hurt. If you have the ability to save a person pain with a simple word change, which costs nothing to do, why don’t you?

A Pride flag is more than a visible symbol of identity. On a doorway, it’s knowing a safe haven in unknown place. On a classroom wall, it’s an offer of guidance. On a white coat, it’s the understanding a doctor will listen.

People tell me they won’t wear pronouns pins because they don’t want to risk alienating others. It’s funny because: 1) Everyone has pronouns 2) If they don’t care they won’t notice the pin 3) It means more to the people who do care, and it’s time to make them a priority
