Political reporters everywhere just learned a lesson college football fans know well: Once the boosters start leaking that they want you out, you're done.
A scene from last night: Former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley quietly eating a container of spaghetti and meatballs in the corner as Vols fans celebrated right above his head.
Regardless of whether Brandon Miller legally did anything wrong, bringing a gun that resulted in the death of a human being isn't "wrong spot at the wrong time." I'm still flabbergasted Nate Oats actually used those words to describe the situation.
Went up to the guy wearing the “Killing our way through the SEC shirt” and he told me to “Get the fuck out of my face.”
Claimed that he was, in fact, a Bama fan and would be back for tomorrow’s game.
With Jeremy Pruitt back in the news, it reminds me of a favorite Nick Saban anecdote that didn't make the book.
One night out recruiting, Pruitt and Saban are looking to get some food. Pruitt suggests Zaxby's.
Saban looks at Pruitt and says, "What the fuck is a Zaxby's?"
During a disagreement, Derek Mason told Bryan Harsin, "I've been a head coach in this league longer than you have."
Harsin replied, "Oh, you mean at Vanderbilt?"

story on Bryan Harsin's short time in Auburn full of drama:
BREAKING: Georgia QB Jaden Rashada is suing Florida head coach Billy Napier and top Gators booster Hugh Hathcock for fraud, among other allegations, over failed $13.85 million NIL deal.

The SEC just told me these fans will not be allowed in again on Sunday with these shirts and if they are found wearing them will be asked to leave.
Here's our story:
"I guess the best thing to do would have been to play less games because you seem to get rewarded for not playing this year in college football."
After his first loss, Dan tried to shift blame to having a packed stadium. After this one, Dan tries to whine about playing 10 games.
The "SEC is overrated" takes were flowing widely on this here app when Georgia went down early to Cincinnati. Since then
--Georgia beat best G5 team
--Alabama crushed Notre Dame
--4-5 Ole Miss beat B10's No. 2 team
--4-5 UK beat No. 23 NC St
Former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, now a co-OC at Maryland, arrested for DUI over the weekend in Hillsborough County, Fla. (First reported by
@taylorjlyons
). Maryland had a bye last weekend.
Auburn AD John Cohen is a well-respected, thoughtful AD who should be capable of answering questions about why he hired Hugh Freeze.
Auburn not letting a reporter ask Cohen a single question is telling.
As part of a search that AD John Cohen described as "thoughtful, thorough and well-vetted," Auburn never reached out to former Liberty student Chelsea Andrews, the recipient of multiple unsolicited DMs from Hugh Freeze.
Story:
Alabama already had a strong signing day but landing LSU transfer DB Eli Ricks is the cherry on top. Should be an immediate starter when he joins next year.
With the Big Ten inching closer to canceling a fall season and others like the Pac-12 expected to join, the SEC is holding firm and not moving in the same direction:
The Alabama team was told Wednesday that the school hoped to have Saban's replacement in place in the next 72 hours, sources told
@mzenitz
@mikerodak
and I for
@247Sports
:
@MarkJuang
I didn't do that. I walked up to introduce myself and asked if I could talk to him about his shirt. He started yelling at me and after a few back and forth a Vandy fan next to him started yelling back at the guy and I took my phone out to record.
After a dominant season and now a dominant title game performance, there's a real argument to be made this is not only Nick Saban's best team ever but the best college football team, period.
Are we really going to say this is the darkest day of a conference that has had to grapple with the disgusting Sandusky and Nassar scandals? C'mon now. This is an absurd take.
Note the date: 9/16/20, the day the vaunted Big Ten became the SEC. It choked. It got scared. It sold its soul for football. My
@usatodaysports
column on the darkest day in Big Ten history:
Jim Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan:
Year 1- Paid $7 mil, finishes 3rd in B10 East
Year 2 - Paid $9 mil, finishes 3rd in B10 East
Year 3 -- Paid $7 mil, likely going to finish 4th in B10 East
Even before Gus Malzahn was fired, the battle over who'd get to pick the next Auburn head coach had begun.
After talking to numerous sources, here's the story on the push to fire Malzahn and quickly promote Kevin Steele, and why it didn't work.
Jermaine Burton, who had 197 yards and 2 TDs, told his teammates before the game: "We have to come out there and attack. How bad do you want it? They want to storm the field."
Believed A&M fans were going to storm the field if they won and he would not let that happen.
To sum up Alabama's day so far:
--SEC freshman of the year and star safety Caleb Downs expected to enter portal
--Starting left tackle and former 5-star Kadyn Proctor intends to go into portal
--5-star Zion Grady decommits
Welcome to the SEC in 2024, Kalen DeBoer.
I hate this argument. It’s an overrated stadium in a part of the country that barely cares about CFB.
Put it in Atlanta or New Orleans every year so it’s easier for Georgia/Bama/LSU fans to get to.
So now Pruitt, a man who famously didn't know what asparagus was on national TV, has to explain to Nick Saban what a Zaxby's is.
He decides on, "It's like a classier Chick-fil-A, Coach."
Which, no disrespect to Zaxby's, is not the description I would have gone with.
Thought Sam Pittman did a really nice job putting together his first staff but I might be even more impressed he's been able to retain so many of them. Keeping Odom + Briles speaks to culture Pittman has built and school's willingness to invest in program.
Kendal Briles will remain at
@RazorbackFB
as offensive coordinator, sources tell ESPN. Briles was a candidate for the
@CanesFootball
OC job. He’s been with Sam Pittman the last two years at Arkansas, and the Hogs led the SEC in rushing last season.
Georgia is the clear favorite to land Alabama star safety Caleb Downs, multiple sources told
@mzenitz
and I for
@247Sports
. Downs intends to enter the transfer portal but has not gone in yet.
The
@finebaum
show has turned into a remembrance of Cecil Hurt. It is sad but also uplifting to hear all the memories of him. For Paul to carry on his show after losing a close friend and turn it into a way to fondly remember him is pretty incredible.
Deion Sanders couldn't be more inaccurate. Nick Saban doesn't "cuss out" reporters who call him "Nick" like Deion says. What a clown move to walk out of media days over that.
Talking season apparently abruptly ended at SWAC Media Days as Jackson State coach Deion Sanders walks out of SWAC Media Day event after being called 'Deion'.
Here's what I'm comfortable saying: There's been a concerted effort to ramp up pressure and make it untenable for Bryan Harsin to return for Year 2. And Harsin has provided plenty of ammo from coaching departures to transfer portal exodus. Situation moving fast.
SMU fires Rob Lanier after 2 years which prompts:
Andy Enfield leaves USC for SMU
Eric Musselman leaves Arkansas for USC
And now John Calipari leaving Kentucky for Arkansas, according to multiple reports.
Dominos aren't done falling. Wild that SMU set off this crazy carousel.
I was very skeptical of Arkansas hiring Sam Pittman but he should easily be the early frontrunner for SEC Coach of the Year. Remarkable turnaround for the Razorbacks.
NIL attorney Mike Caspino: "Having worked with (A&M's collective), everything Jimbo Fisher said is 100 percent correct and true. He didn’t violate any bylaws if you keep the collective separate (from the school). A&M and their collective are just very good at what they do."
The Saban playbook at this point is I think this is bad for CFB but if this is what you want, I’ll do it better than any of you. That last sentence is a warning.
Saban: We were 2nd in recruiting last year. A&M was first. A&M bought every player on their team. Made a deal for name, image and likeness. We didn’t buy one player. But I don’t know if we’re going to be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it
Been trending this way for weeks. Jeremy Pruitt has told those around him this year if he gets fired, he'll just go back to Alabama and work for Saban again.
From
@mzenitz
and me, per sources: There are COVID-19 issues at Ohio State that have led to discussions about possibly having to push back the national title game to a later date
Alabama is expected to hire Buffalo head coach Maurice Linguist as a defensive assistant, likely working with the secondary, sources tell
@ClowESPN
and me. Linguist, who finished his third season at UB, is the second sitting FBS head coach to join Kalen DeBoer's defensive staff.
Amid a panic over myocarditis risks at the college level, Mayo Clinic cardiologist Dr. Ackerman told the Big 12 and CUSA that shouldn't be the reason to cancel the CFB season.
His perspective prompted a "wave of relief," according to one AD.
Alabama and Ohio State did their final COVID-19 testing on Friday and the results that came back ensured the game will be played as scheduled, according to sources.
Monday's national title game is a go:
It was a simple gesture but watching Nick Saban, a man who does nothing by happenstance, break from his routine to run over to thank the fans was notable.
My column on an Alabama crowd so good Saban wanted to personally thank every fan:
A challenge Twitter has brought to journalism: You can't claim you are "just reporting the facts" when you then offer opinions on every story that pops up that clearly shows where you stand on the issues. Rather than pretending to be an impartial observer, own your bias.
This is clear tampering publicly admitted. You really don't see the problem with a school communicating with a player on another team and then he just *magically* ends up transferring there?
Tampering happens everywhere but it's usually not this sloppy and said out loud
What’s wrong with Iowa telling a player it recruited, ‘keep your head up’ amidst freshman year struggles?
If that’s tampering, let’s all agree CFB needs substantial changes, now.
“I (was here) for four years and I’ve never seen the guy cough, use a throat lozenge, blow his nose, anything,” says Hale Hentges. “He’s never been sick; he doesn’t get sick.”
I wrote about the legend of Nick Saban never getting sick.
Just a pathetic coaching performance from Bryan Harsin today. He won't go down as bad a hire as Chad Morris, but could easily be one of the worst SEC hires of the last decade.
I know everything with Alabama is inevitable, but this really feels like one of, if not the, most unlikely title game appearance of the Nick Saban era.
As the best teams do, this team has peaked at the right time after looking vulnerable for most of the season.
At times it looked like Taulia Tagovailoa might leave Maryland for Auburn.
Until Tua stepped in. "We're an Alabama family," he told his brother.
In latest excerpt from "The Price," a look at Maryland's fight to keep its QB in high-stakes NIL battle:
What I can add to the Houston Chronicle report: The belief is Texas and Oklahoma have already taken steps to facilitate a move out of the Big 12 and the SEC is the desired landing place:
Undoubtedly a tough night for Auburn fans but it can always be worse. Apparently my 4 y/o discovered Caillou tonight and is already a big fan. This is my worst nightmare.
Breaking: Alabama is expected to hire Maryland baseball coach Rob Vaughn as its next head coach, sources tell

Not going after Tyler when I say this, but if your team can't get up for a big game like Texas and took winning it "for granted," you've got major issues. Not like this team snuck up on them, it was the biggest game on the schedule.
Tyler Booker told
@NextRoundLive
on Tuesday that Alabama 'didn't practice the best by any means' before its loss to Texas and needs more energy this week.
"I feel like we probably just took winning for granted, like we did last year."
Multiple sources have told me the report of Georgia DC Dan Lanning being the next Oregon coach is inaccurate. The
@ajc
reported that news earlier today.
Tosh Lupoi was a tremendous recruiter for Alabama but was in over his head the minute Saban promoted him to DC. Moving to the NFL as a position coach makes sense for him and Alabama.
From me and
@mzenitz
, per sources: Kevin Steele has emerged as a serious candidate for the Auburn head coaching job, potentially even the lead candidate now.
Multiple sources have also said they don’t expect Hugh Freeze to get the job.
Auburn paid $21.5 million to fire Gus Malzahn after a 6-4 season in a 10-game SEC schedule.
After losing to South Carolina, Bryan Harsin will finish with at least five losses in his first season. The Tigers still have to play Alabama, too.
A powerful set of Auburn boosters tried to intimidate search committee members. They told AD Allen Greene if he went against their wishes, they'd try to run him out of town. But Greene never backed down from wanting to do a national search:
Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team until Alabama gathers more information about the situation. "Everybody's got an opportunity to make choices and decisions. There's no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Good story from
@ByCasagrande
on what happened on Alabama's last-second defensive stop against Texas A&M. Bama DB says he read Jimbo Fisher's lips saying "Evan, Evan, Evan" and knew it was going to Stewart:
After the Kick Six loss, Nick Saban was at an inflection point. Reported for the first time in my upcoming book, Saban considered leaving Alabama for a College GameDay role at ESPN.
