My sagas with Discovery continue. My 82 year old mother needs surgery tomorrow.
@Discovery
don't want to pay for her to be admitted overnight. She is on Classic Core. They are a disgraceful organization. I will just pay myself. Her 20 years of membership mean nothing.
Edcon is very close to announcing a complete recapitalisation of the business that should endure for the next few years. We cannot comment on the details as it is not yet finalized. Speculation and sensationalism will harm not help the company.
@MmusiMaimane
Hi Musi. Actually we are in the final stages of completing a deal to recapitalize Edcon and continuing to restore it to its former glory. All stakeholders involved. We asked the
@SundayTimesZA
to wait to next weekend to announce the final deal. They refused.
I am amazed at the confidence with which commentors on the Crisis speak ... the certainty with which they express their opinion. It's a 1 in 100 year event. How do they know so much? Time travelers? Clairvoyants?
#Covid19inSA
Edcon comments that parts of the Sunday Times article of 16 December 2018, and specifically its headline, are unfortunately speculative, misleading and sensationalist.Edcon has not ‘crashed’.The Group had a great sales day yesterday (15 December 2018) with sales up on last year.
I have been visiting stores all round the Eastern Cape this week. No sign of an impending Economic Collapse here. Road building everywhere. Good quality roads. Towns and Cities incredibly busy. Malls busy. Stores doing well ... just in need of some revamping. Employees upbeat.
@SundayTimesZA
Rather than report that the Stakeholders of Edcon on working on a deal, close to completion, to keep Edcon going and restore it to its former glory, the Sunday Times continue it campaign to damage the company. Sensationalism at it worst.
For the record when
@SundayTimesZA
asked us on comment late Friday, as they like to do, we said we can't comment because the deal is not finalized. We ask them to wait a week so we could announce the signed deal. They refused.
It's really unfair to regulate that a driving license is required, and then not provide an efficient way to get or renew a license.
@OUTASA
can you help?
The imbalance in any fight between the forces of good versus evil, is that the forces of good need to follow the rules, while evil will do anything it wants to win.
Further enquiry has revealed that because 'core' doesn't have a savings account, means they don't have an account to charge the night to. You give money to a savings account and then have to ask for it back. They then use the savings it to subsidize the hospital plan.
A big thanks to all Edcon team members for a record
#Blackfriday
. Stores, systems, website all had to deal with record volumes. It was an exhausting day and we have to get up today and start again; you guys are brilliant.

The way to test whether your planned behavior is acceptable is to ask ... "what would the consequence be of everyone doing what I want to do at the same time"?

On my journey to get an electricity and water connection from COJ, I have sat for days in walk-in centers. Chatting to other residents, there is a crisis. Between rates increases and electricity increases, people's bills have doubled, even tripled.

I hear the police are being tough on Essential Workers. To our wonderful call-center team members. If you are trying to get to work go home. If you are at the call center stay there and travel back at 4pm when you are allowed to travel.

Just want to thank the Department of Labour and SAPS for agreeing to come and inspect our 'essential services' call centers in Jhb and Durban. We are grateful that you are also working at this time to serve citizens.

They have tried to reach out tonight. I told them to stuff-off. They are not doctors. They are not a hospital. They are an insurance company and need only approve the payments or not. Netcare, the doctors and hospital staff are taking wonderful care of my mother: not Discovery.
@GrantPattison
I went to a store yesterday and it had very little customers.Good luck not sure what else can be done. - Edgars could close 1,300 stores and cut 40,000 jobs
The choice is not between a messed-up economy with lock-down and a great economy without lockdown. The economy can't run normally while people do not trust being in others presence.
#strategicchoicestructuring
Because
#BlackFriday
is American and defined by
#Thanksgiving
it's not really transferable to South Africa. It will inevitably descend into chaos as retailers start earlier and nonsensically make it last a week or a month. We really need our own South African tradition.
"If you have the facts, you argue the facts; if you have the law, you argue the law; if you have neither you just argue" ... most of the stuff I read on Twitter is just arguing.
I think I have reached that inflection point where I don't trust that a physical-store will be in-stock of the item I need anymore, so I'd rather order online and wait ... and I am a really loyal shopper. It's a slippery slope when a store manages their stock levels down too low.
@EdgarsFashion
We have to work with 1/3 staff levels in the DC and no ability to work night shift. These are the regulations. You are right ... we are lucky to have business ... and grateful.
We need to 'stay the course' with Eskom. It takes great discipline to continue with pre-planned maintenance, which will worsen load-shedding in the short-term. This discipline has been lacking in the past.
@Theholisticpsyc
Or ... the latest generation of psychologists over-diagnose trauma, which used to be limited to a life threatening experience, but is now ascribed to almost any negative emotion, creating a generation of victims.
@JamesPrestonZA
Thanks James. It's sad for us too. Unfortunately in that mall, the landlord wanted to renew the rent at R340 per m2, and we normally pay half that in similar mall. We can not run stores at a loss. Most of our CNA stores run at a profit.
Over R6000 deducted unauthorized off my credit card.
@absa
fraud phones to check, I tell them it's unauthorized. They say it's too late it's gone, go report it to police, it the merchants job to get the authorisation not theirs???

Did my home solar install about 6 years ago. A total of 36MWHrs generated so far. My 12 x 240AH Gel Lead-acid batteries are now end-of-life.
@solar_renew
swopped out to 4 x Plylontech 3500s and upgraded the GX control. Awesome job.
Visited Cape Town recently. The driving there has become very aggressive. Is this the new Cape Town culture, or the effect of all the Gautengers moving there?
Check out the beautiful new shop windows at

@SandtonCity
. We are in the process of simplifying the store layout in time for the Autumn and Winter stock. Go check it out.
Concluding the problem with Eskom is the Energy Availability Factor, is like concluding a business makes a loss because expenses exceed income ... a technically correct, trivial insight, that is useless in diagnosing the problem.
The choice is between a messed-up economy with lock down and a messed-up economy without a lock down. Tricky to figure out which one would be more messed up.
For the cynics. I visit wherever we have stores. Tiny rural towns, townships and large metro cities. Retailers go everywhere. I drive myself everywhere in between.
Questions like ... Does the Board have the authority to raise capital and retire debt? Can they hire, fire and incentives senior management? Do they have the authority to restructure and retrench?
Whilst we are examining the individuals appointed to the Eskom Board, it it worth reflecting on what the role of the Board is and how will their success or failure be measured.
Update on my Electric Car experience. I have now done 50,000 km in my Nissan Leaf. It consumes 15 kwh per 100km. The range has declined by 30 percent (was 150km now 100km). No parts have needed to be replaced yet.
@Ms_ZamaNdlovu
@SongezoZibi
I agree on the strategic mistakes and not keeping up with local tastes. Not sure about loyalty programs, they do work. Edgars mistakenly chased International Brands but has corrected in the last two years. I hope you can see the difference.
@Fin24
Hey
@ferialhaffajee
. Thanks for the feedback. We are really working hard to address your fair criticism. How about we do some store walks in January so we can show you what we are up to and see if we can win back your custom?
@OldManZack
Unlikely to be that. More likely the switchgear controlling your area has reached end-of-life and you can't be switched off and on often. Loadshhedding will resume once your switchgear is upgraded.
I am happy to pay the R900 monthly fee
@Eskom_SA
proposes. However I want a SLA. If they can't provide electricity for 100% of the month, then the charge gets dropped and I use the R900 to pay for my UPS.
Machine reliability is a statistical science. You can only talk in 'probabilities' and 'confidence levels'. With negative reserve capacity we we will be exposed to the randomness of reliability. Until we have significant reserve capacity again, to promise otherwise is dishonest.
Beyond mismanagement and corruption, the fundamental economic challenge for Eskom and the country is the replacement of old depreciated assets with new assets.
#Eskom
With an 81 year old mother with dementia, I am becoming acutely aware of the challenges older people have with the modern world of banking, cell phones, watching TV, e-commerce etc. We mustn't forget them when we design modern systems.

, "comprehensive"??? You sure? I feel like, by definition, short-term insurance can't be comprehensive, as you have dozens of exclusions? Do we need to do this again?
The returns on my investment in a Nissan Leaf and Rooftop PV and Solar Water Heating is increasing every year. I am probably over 20% Return-on-Capital-Invested per year.

It is true that we have much work to do in this respect. I understand that our customers will only get great service when employees feels respected, respect themselves and feel proud of the company.
@Moneyweb
Also no need to speculate how we we doing before the President's annoucement on the 15th, you just had to ask. In January/Feb we increased sales relative to space by over 6 percent. In March we were doing even better before the annoucement.
