I think it speaks to the deterioration of modern blockbuster filmmaking that we so rarely recognize the performances of the actors in popular media anymore. They usually fade into the background, acting only in service of the brand. Genuine emotion like this is startling.

People are gonna undervalue Dano’s performance in this movie because he’s not doing his usual “crazy sicko gets beat up” schtuck, but goddamn, the way he subtly and internally navigates so many complicated emotions in this movie is stunning. Love this movie with my whole heart.

One thing I really like about all the Guardians movies is their spin on the usual MCU snarky protagonist. All the pop culture Peter Quill grew up on only served as escapes from reality, and the movies continually push the idea that he needs to mature.

Prime example of how to touch on something real in a superhero movie. Endgame doesn't do this very well. Far From Home definitely doesn't do it well. Shazam is the king of heartfelt, emotional superhero movies, and y'all have got to pay some more respect to this masta peece.

Hate to be that guy, but looking at those Oscar ballots, there does genuinely seem to be an antisemitic undercurrent to the Fabelmans backlash. I saw parts of myself and my Jewish family in that film, and I'm upset that it's been reduced to stereotypes by Academy voters.

Hot take, but I have never really gotten upset about “part one” movies. Most of them do a pretty good job of splitting the story evenly as its most logical point, and the tension of waiting for the continuation is part of what makes them fun.

I think the biggest strength of the GOTG movies is that they don’t really opt for realism. They’re the closest the MCU has gotten to looking and feeling like a comic book.
This is a real shot from a James Gunn movie with a $200m budget. Holy crap the guy is talentless.
