Sheikh Hamid Saleh Suleiman passed away this year. An Eritrean who played a leading role in ELF. He was of Saho origin and studied at Al-Azhar university and spoke Saho, Arabic, Tigrinya, and Tigre fluently. In 1960, he participated in establishing ELF in Cario.

Ali Ibrahim was originally from Adi-Kehi but was raised in Mendefera. He was the first cousin of Ahmed Nasser (Head of ELF). He is Saho, from the Asawartu clan. Ali Ibrahim is regarded as a great leader and was martyred in August 1988. His death was kept quiet for two weeks.

Mohamed Idris Ali led the first battle of the Eritrean War of Independence, the Battle of Togoruba, which involved the Ethiopian army. They defeated the Ethiopian army and was a huge moral boost for the freedom fighters and sent a seismic shock to the Ethiopian government.
