Y’all swear mental health challenges exist in a fuckin vacuum. People are poor, they’re fuckin starving, having to withstand extreme conditions, relationships & interactions, often through abuse just to survive. This is trauma. Stop pretending like mental health support is enough
Headlines to the Bronx fire should read “Negligent landlord caused fire that claimed 19 lives”. Space heaters caused the fire but the lack of heat is the reason why the space heater was there in the first place.
Yesterday students from my high school, Long Island City, protested the racist principals policies by staging a walk out. They reached out to Eric Adam’s & he condescendingly told em’ that walking out would do nothing & “children should stay in school” instead of supporting em’.
NYCHA was originally built for white middle class folks & it was considered state of the art housing at the time & it was well maintained. When the majority of tenants in NYCHA became black & brown, they aggressively started defunding it. Publicly funding NYCHA is racial justice.
Hochul evoking MLKs spirit in justification of a Chief Judge nominee who has egregiously closed the doors of Justice to the labor rights of workers, civil rights of black people & women, & the rights of consumers against corporations is a gross injustice to his radical legacy.
Today I was charged $10 for a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel and I saw a one bedroom apt with no living room in Astoria for $2000 and it’s not even noon yet.
The country is savage. Landlord evicted a 78 yr old man who lived in a rent stabilized apt for 13 years. He lived in his truck for a month. Fortunately, I was able to get him back into his home. He told me that before my representation he had no spirit, but after he did.
#RTC
Landlords just own titles. Tenants, we own and posses the buildings. That’s our power, and when we exude that militantly - there’s nothing they can do to us.
Eric Adam’s fascist ass thought he was going to go to my law school and be received well by my colleagues? Absolutely the fuck not. FOH. Proud of my people in the current class to boo his ass.
After doing voter protection for
@CabanForQueens
, I can tell you first hand I saw some shady business when affirming the affidavits. I saw the same handwriting on several affidavits for different people. I wouldn’t trust this up 20 votes nonsense at all.

Took my Oath for admission into NYS Bar yesterday. Took em forever to admit me even though I passed the bar almost 2 yrs ago first try. This one’s for the hood. This one’s for QUEENS. This one’s for MY PEOPLE. I promise to discharge my duties for our our liberation BY ANY MEANS!
Landlord: so the apt is $2500 a month.
Me: negotiable?
Landlord: no, same units in the area in new buildings going for $3.5k
The conversations not captured by data purporting to support unfettered development as the answer for housing affordability.
The studies are classist
Like do y’all ever think “wow, we really gotta pay 2,000 a month to live on the planet”? Shit is wild to me, and the fact that we ain’t thinking outside that box is beyond me.
Been on hold with
#HRA
for three hours for a client. Imagine the desperation of New Yorkers trying to get emergency cash assistance for rental arrears and other necessities having to do this. People have work, kids and lives to get to. This is absurdly unacceptable.
Just consulted with a group of tenants in Corona where a new building owner jacked everyone’s rent up from 1300 to 3000 for one bedroom apartments in a 50 year old building. Y’all really think it’s a supply issue is JOKES. This is constructive eviction.
Increasing the supply of market rate units now won’t do shit for affordability now. Decommodifying housing & building deeply affordable public housing will. This is a question of political will. If electeds stand against the real estate lobby it can happen.
Public housing has good cause. Public housing has deeply affordable housing. Public housing is decommodified housing. Public housing is rent stabilized.
And no one wants to invest in it, build it, expand it. Just new shiny bills trying to reinvent a wheel that’s been built.
They have a first amendment constitutional right to protest injustice just like anybody else. This is a public school, a public forum, & dealing with matters inextricably concerning the public. A principal forcing her black assistant principal to resign is good reason to protest.
Sorry
@CMChiOsse
it’s not as simple as supply & demand & build more housing. These are the talking points of YIMBY’s that have long seized housing policy in NYC & have caused gentrification of our black & brown communities. It matters what TYPE of housing we build.
#PublicHousing
Another day of intake in housing court and every single tenant in court is black and/or brown. The line outside of court went down the block and across the street. The court is a vestige of chattel slavery and we have a legislature bought, paid & “organized” by white liberals.
Proud to be an Alumni of Long Island City High School. These students are about it! We will not accept racism in any of its forms, from policing, to schools, to housing.
@CUNYLaw
this is unacceptable. As an alumni, I am deeply appalled that you would invite this fascist cop mayor to speak at graduation. He is the antithesis of what our student body stands for. This is beyond tone deaf & the fact it wasn’t disclosed to students is a red flag.
Today we filed a collective lawsuit against
#NYCHA
for failure to make repairs on behalf of a dozen
#Queensbridge
Residents. NYCHA has been grossly negligent in securing the dignified living of tenants & have breached the warranty of habitability. It’s time to make the repairs.
I’ll take white people supporting black organizers over black politicians that are taking
@REBNY
money to gentrify our hoods.
@cmlauriecumbo
It aint just about race, it’s about class. If you taking
@REBNY
$ then you cant say
#BlackLivesMatter
because they are the true gentrifiers
On FB, Council Member Laurie Cumbo says insurgents' primary wins are part of the "gentrification movement." She endorsed Mosley and Wright who lost to DSA-backed Souffrant Forrest and Brisport.
But her "75% out-of-state, mostly Seattle" is clearly false.
What’s touted as “strategic” is often anti-black and anti-poor. It reverberates the sentiments of the white liberal that told Martin “not yet” when it came to black liberation.
The Bronx building fire had 174 violations. The city ignored it. The landlords ignored it & black & brown people died. This is not an anomaly. Countless buildings in our hoods have this problem. It doesn’t get fixed because the owners also own the politicians, including the mayor
Disagreeing with his conservative decisions does not mean one doesn’t want a Puerto Rican chief Justice. Neoliberals utilizing identity politics as a shield for a judges conservative jurisprudence is crazy.
I’m in the Bronx with leaders and advocates to make clear: The Honorable Hector D. LaSalle is the best person to serve as Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals. Watch live:
Claims that stopping development leads to housing scarcity is BS b/c 1. There isn’t scarcity of housing, there’s scarcity of deeply affordable housing since they only build luxury & 2. They’ve built in Astoria all my life & the only things going up are luxury building & the rent!
Mutual Aid is harm reduction. Social programs are harm reduction. Public benefits are harm reduction. Luxury up-zonings with minimal faux affordability IS NOT HARM REDUCTION.
Just so bizarre [classist] to me that the folks dictating housing policy and affordability likely have never been able to not afford a place or have never been evicted from their home. Of course you’re going to be a YIMBY you always have had a backyard.
So called organizers and activists become elected, join the political class and lose the sense of urgency required to be a true conduit of the people. Perhaps they never had the sense of urgency to begin with, outside their lust for power.
I got a phone call yesterday from tenants at Jacob Riis Houses because
@NYCHA
advised them not to use water in their apts because they were poisoned with arsenic. Why the FUCK is this happening to black & brown people? We need this assessed immediately
@HarveyforNY
@bradhoylman
.
I’ve been a
#NYCLifeguard
for over 10 years. I’ve lifeguarded at Betsy Head, Howard, Fort Totten and Astoria Pool. There has always been a lifeguard shortage & these programs have been staffed. This cutting is due to the austerity budget pushed by the mayor to fund more cops.
Due to the national lifeguard shortage, unfortunately we will not be hosting swim programs, including lap swim, senior swim, and Learn to Swim, at our outdoor pools this summer. Outdoor pools will remain open each day for general swim from 11am-3pm and from 4pm–7pm.
After a pandemic, where countless folks lost their work, landlords want 40x the rent & 700 credit score to rent an apt. Who do you think can afford that? This is an assault on the working class & poor. I can’t imagine how many people will be houseless because of this.
Every single elected official in this city needs to step into housing court to see first hand how they have absolutely failed every single tenant in New York City after the Pandemic. It’s an absolute zoo in here. All these evictions will be in your hands.
Landlords are discriminating against retail workers because the jobs allegedly aren’t secure. We really need to do something about class based discrimination, it’s a cover for race based discrimination in NYC especially.
Yerrrrrrr, yo New York Legislature, don’t talk to me about legalizing marijuana without getting all the black people, who have been incarcerated for its sale and consumption, out of jail too. PERIODT. Miss me with that talk

They have effectively made the right to counsel a lottery to counsel by failing to adequately fund RTC. I’m in housing court daily, and my colleagues are taking up as many cases as we can and it’s not even remotely enough. The city is acting like they want evictions.
Tenant eviction lawyers receive millions in new funding, but still far from the $350M needed for the Right to Counsel program to truly fulfill its purpose.

27k approved for my client to stay in his rent stabilized apt of 20 yrs. An elderly individual who lost work during the pandemic & went back to work DESPITE his age to try & pay. Dude deserves to never lift a finger ever again but back to work he goes. At least he has his home.
Another day in housing court and again every single tenant going through the eviction mill is black or brown. If you thought capitalism wasn’t racist because chattel slavery don’t exist just step into any trial court in nyc.
I’m a pillar in my hood. Reppin my hood in the courts for now but I promise Ima rep us in the legislature. They can only slow down the inevitable, they can’t stop it. In the meantime you can catch me serving landlords & pigs with lawsuits the way Beijing serving up these noodles.
HPD is short staffed by like 100 plus people, with only 200 or so inspectors for 1 million buildings. Buildings in our hood are in shambles, no heat, no hot water but we got 36,000 police officers wasting their time. Imagine we had 36,00 HPD inspectors and attorneys.
Housing Court today:
Landlord attorney (also child of rich developer): what do people think that they don’t have to work & pay rent?
Me: yea, it’s a big issue, with a simple solution.
Them: what?
Me: abolish rent.
Them: no way! Housing isn’t a right.
2010 4k black residents left Harlem, 10k white folks entered
23k in BK left vs 40k white folks that moved in
And Stuyvesant HS only accepted 11 black students this upcoming freshman year out of 544.
Tell me more about how these new buildings are helping black & brown people.
ERAP is treating
#NYCHA
tenants like second class citizens and no one in the state legislature is batting an eye about. We fought to Cancel Rent and NYCHA gets left out, and then we wonder about NYCHA's apathy for politics.
A landlord stopped me in housing court today because she loved my testimony before the Office of Civil Justice advocating for the Right to Counsel and stated “I’m a landlord but that speech was really enthusiastic and good!” Btw - I ended the speech with “Abolish Landlords” 😂
The amount of dusty ass one bedroom apartments in Astoria for 2k plus is fucking sickening. Like y’all really have the audacity to try and charge this much for dated ass apartments. They’re allowed to do this because the new shoe box size apts are going 3k or better. Tired y’all.
DSA called me twice to renew my membership. I wish they called that many times to speak out against Innovation QNS or against the Blueprint for NYCHA. I have not renewed my membership because their housing stance. The member on the phone agreed. Lol
NYCHA Trust advocates be like “we can’t depend on federal funds/govt” and instead of attempting to fully fund NYCHA they pass a bill that depends on Section 8 FEDERAL FUNDS. Cut the antics and cut the check instead. Y’all playin.
All this squatter propaganda is an assault on tenants rights period. The incident of these squatters is extremely rare and the media is sensationalizing the hell out of it. The media is the 4th branch of government for the capitalist state.
If you can, try not to ignore the homeless. I know it’s hard being empathetic in the midst of the rush of capitalism. Whatever it is, do what you can. Whether it’s to say hello, give money, give food, or whatever. This won’t fix the systemic problem of homelessness but
They really tried to erase Puerto Ricans on Graham ave. Fuck all you shark ass predator developers and DOT folks who pushed for this shit. This Astroturf YIMBYISM is modern day settler colonialism. Watch when we tap into the political power in the hood, it’s over for y’all.
My mother’s who has serious health issues & many other tenants at 26-45 9th St. Astoria Queens are without hot water for 24 hrs due to the negligence of Wavecrest Management. How is this acceptable in the 21st century & amidst this Corona virus pandemic?
@NYCHousing
@HealthNYGov
Lol I got denied being placed on Community Board 1 again. For a body that is often told to be apolitical, the decision to appoint folks on it seems quite political.
To improve living conditions + the sustainability of public housing, I am proposing a program to move
@NYCHA
residents into new public housing within a new, adjacent building to create additional housing units to address the citywide crisis.
#PeopleOverEverything
32BJ be supporting developments that their laborers can’t even afford. We need to have a serious conversation about unions and what the working class/poor means.
Here you go, for $2800 dollars a month you too can have your living room in the kitchen! Is this what y’all want? Is this the YIMBY solution to the housing crisis for FAMILIES with one, maybe two incomes and 5 household members? For one person on 40k a year? Miss me with the BS!
I don’t think being DSA is the benchmark for being socialist, lord knows there’s mad liberals here but if you a democratic socialist and voting yes on a budget that increases funding for the police and decreases everything else then idk what a democratic socialist is.
Somewhat surprising aye vote from
@ShahanaFromBK
Hanif, who does so "with complicated feelings.” She's a democratic socialist (though didn't get NYC-DSA's support in the primary), but also a former council staffer.
Aviles, Barron and Cabán have voted no, so far.
money is fake, we can print it let’s guarantee decommodified housing for all and have a funding floor at the maintenance minimum for all developments and make that part of each city charter.
That moment when you swipe your metrocard, it reads ‘insufficient fare’ and a patron New Yorker coming out asks, “you need a swipe”? New Yorkers believe the MTA should be free but why doesn’t the state?
#FreeMTA
It’s pretty telling of your politics when negotiation tactics require a hard stance in order to get a better deal & you, as a politician instead pander to developers as though they make the political choice. It also signals who owns you. Posturing is power.
#InnovationQNS
Since we’re talking about violence. Houselessness is violent. Deplorable housing conditions is violent. Poverty is violent. Hunger is violent. Don’t let white supremacy dictate violence. We’re so caught up with abiding by social norms we ignore what shouldn’t be normal.
Makes me sad to think that my parents & elders alike having worked for 30 plus years, still struggle to pay rent to date. Few things pierce my spirit more. This nation and world have sold us all a lie. The American Dream is just that, a dream. The chicken will come home to roost.
Our statement at the NYCHA Solidarity Working Group. Stop the NYCHA Trust Bill now.

. If you would like our analysis on this bill send me a dm. This bills steps toward privatization of NYCHA through financialization. Keep public housing FULLY public.
