:
Canada can DOUBLE public transit ridership by 2035 & cut emissions by 65 million tonnes.
But it will take:
💸operations funding
🚊dedicated transit lanes
🚎fleet electrification
🌇more homes near transit
It’s not cars, it’s not gas and oil, it’s not heavy industry that’s challenging our planet…it is the choices each one of us make every day. Let’s make good choices! Happy Earth Day!
“Imagine being faced with one of the gravest crises of all times, with accelerating impacts on the population you are running to serve, and saying: I'm going to do less. That is the gist of Mr. Poilievre's climate proposition." -
@carobrouillette
I have to admit, the use of this photo of a now shuttered abortion clinic in my home town of Fredericton, after the federal govt did not lift a finger to save it once it was defunded by the province, (after repeatedly promising to save it during elections) is a bit insulting.
2/2 In Canada, I will always stand up for the rights of women to control their own bodies. Full of stop. Because control of our reproductive choice is the foundation of women’s rights.

82% of dealerships in Canada have no ZEVs in stock. What an incredibly biased hit piece. It relies entirely on Cox automotive reporting of inventory denied by the automakers themselves as inaccurate when asked by Reuters journalists.
I really can’t state enough how awful an idea allowing electric cars to drive in bus lanes is. You’re undermining one form of sustainable mobility (that is carrying far more people BTW) with another. As EVs come to dominate the roads good luck ever reclaiming that lost city space
"We have the GTA – a population of around 7 mil. people trying to get around by car. Tokyo hit 7 mil. in the mid-1970s. They realized that past 2 mil. people, if most of the trips are being made by car, then you are in big trouble. It stops working.”

@GovTimWalz
as a VP pick is great news for Public Transit.
As Governor of Minnesota, he delivered a game-changing investment in public transit operations by signing a bill to create a transit-dedicated 0.75% sales tax in the Twin Cities.
Great to see
@JoshMatlow
pledge to reverse TTC cuts and get back to 100% service levels.
It is absolutely correct that better transit service brings back riders and makes transit finances more sustainable.
A pledge like this is the price of entry for credibility on transit.
Matlow promising to improve TTC service, in his first year using $50 million from his City Works Fund, which would be funded by a 2 per cent property tax
US spends billions on roads rather than public transport in ‘climate time bomb.’
New analysis finds money from Biden’s $1.2tn infrastructure bill has overwhelmingly been spent on widening highways for cars.
When faced with deficits in the 1990s, the TTC had the same playbook: cut service & hike fares. Ridership dramatically declined. It took 17 years for ridership to return to 1990 levels, and only after a ridership growth strategy with investment in service.
Low-priced Chinese EVs are only a significant economic threat because legacy automakers have refused to bring affordable EV models to market. If Canada plans on shutting out competition, we need alternative policy pressure to ensure Canadians can get affordable electric vehicles.
The costs of building transit is rising rapidly in the English-speaking world. One thing in common - lack of in-house expertise and excessive reliance on the P3 model, among other issues.
We need to learn best practices from low-cost countries.
Saying 'no' to funding transit because ridership needs to grow first has everything backwards. Ridership will never grow as a result of cuts and under-funding of the system. It reinforces a downward spiral.
No further funding is coming to OC Transpo out of todays announcement. Premier Doug Ford said ridership needs to go up first. He noted previous investments in LRT. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said we need to boost the downtown core
#ottnews
Priority lanes make transit faster, help bring back transit riders, and makes operating the system more cost-efficient.
With the TTC in a fiscal crisis, anything less than accelerating the implementation of RapidTO is simply fiscally irresponsible.
TransLink is moving forward with a plan to increase bus service by 130 percent over the next 10 years.
This is a real vision for a post-pandemic transit recovery that addresses the urgency of the climate crisis. Every City should be following their lead
Huge cut to Ottawa transit budget. Less frequent, less reliable bus network incoming.
If the Mayor is trying to destroy any potential for ridership recovery - this is the way to do it.
#OttPoli
The 2023 city of Ottawa budget includes $53 million in efficiencies - $47 million from transit.
$42.7 million from Transit capital program alignment.
$4.3 million from OC Transpo bus fleet optimization.
Privatizing the operation of VIA Rail’s high frequency rail project and potentially handing it over to their direct competitor - Air Canada is extremely concerning.
The idea that rail service is multimodal with air travel makes a joke out of its potential to reduce emissions.
After contacting Public Services and Procurement Canada for clarification, we still have concerns about fairness and transparency. We are urge

@s_guilbeault
is absolutely right - EVs alone are not a panacea for solving transport emissions. We also need a shift towards public and active transportation - and that means not building new highways.

@mtlgazette
What’s the point of buying transit capacity we don’t use?
The entire troubled project was designed to meet the unique demands from the City for a light rail system with metro capacity (which didn’t exist anywhere).
Now, we’re cutting service in half for most of the day?
"Canada is one of the most auto-dependent countries on Earth. We have almost as many motor vehicles as people, and we have given over an inordinate amount of public space to accommodate them, leaving mere scraps to everyone else.” -
@picardonhealth
Some cities are faring FAR BETTER at ridership recovery than Ottawa. That’s because they didn’t cut service and have instead focused on improving reliability to bring riders back. The last thing OC should do is make further cuts and drive more riders away
The province of New Brunswick is currently being sued by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association for restricting abortion access in the province. The federal government should be suing, too.
This is not true in New Brunswick - 90% of New Brunswickers do not have adequate access to abortion services. NB's gov has restricted abortion services to three hospitals in two cities - CCLA is currently in court to restore access to abortion services to all New Brunswickers.
Cutting LRT service is the worst way to deal with an operating deficit. You do not rebuild ridership by making service worse. It is only one step further down the downward spiral OC Transpo is currently in.
Every park and ride is a policy failure. Both a failure of land use planning - creating a dead zone near a transit hub where people could live or attractive destinations could be clustered. And a testament to failure to solve the last mile problem with an effective bus network.
Whether you’re back at the office full-time or once a week, finding parking can be difficult & expensive. Save yourself the headache and ride with us instead. We’ve got thousands of free parking spaces at Park & Ride lots across Ottawa. More info:
We have a Premier who is in clear violation of the Canada Health Act, openly speaks at anti-choice rallies, and the federal govt only clawed back a measly sum from the Health transfer only to give the money back. No backbone to stand up to this man restricting abortion access.
Blaine Higgs speaking to an anti-abortion rally:
He states that anti abortion campaigners “have a conviction that I too, agree with”.
He is then joined by most of his cabinet ministers behind the microphone, including the Minister of Health.

Hate that this still has to be said, but expanding highways does not reduce gridlock. Highway 413 will add 17 million tonnes of GHG emissions to the atmosphere and is a climate bomb waiting to happen.
#OnPoli
Asked what he's doing to prevent climate change, Doug Ford mentions electric vehicle production & transit, but also claims building highways is a climate change solution "to get people home quicker, that they don't have to sit in gridlock and smell someone else's fumes."
#onpoli
A bit rich to hear this from a candidate that has two city councillors that voted against holding a public inquiry into the LRT debacle as his campaign co-chairs (El-Chantiry & Cloutier).
#OttPoli
As Mayor, I’ll work to make Ottawa more affordable, reliable and safe for everyone, while keeping taxes low. That includes fixing LRT and improving bus service – but it will not include free transit for all. /9

Big News: Today, President Biden announced funding to build the first high-speed rail projects in our nation’s history.
These investments will get people and goods where they need to go more quickly, reduce emissions, increase passenger safety, and create good-paying union jobs.
Premier Doug Ford is clarifying his comments on fourplexes across the province, even as his government shuts down the idea of allowing four-storey buildings to be constructed in residential neighbourhoods without prior municipal approval.
#onpoli
Trading 413 for the battery plant while letting transit systems fall into a death spiral would signal that the federal govt has signed onto the Ford govt’s car dependent sprawl agenda & further blow up chances of meeting 2030 transport sector GHG targets.
When higher orders of government download services without giving cities the revenue tools they need, they eat a free lunch.
They shouldn’t be surprised when cities start handing them the bill.
Will the 2024 Federal Budget leave public transit behind? Read our Backgrounder by
@ClimateNate
, Clean Transportation Program Manager, to learn why this matters and what we need in the Federal Budget to unlock public transit as a climate solution. 🔗
It doesn’t matter if a bus is electric if nobody is riding it, because operating budget shortfalls forced deep service cutbacks.
The federal govt. must stop ignoring the transit operating budget crisis. A transit death spiral puts climate goals at risk.
This clip is incredible.
A 16 foot blind spot in front of an SUV where you can’t see children.
We need to seriously address how much car sizes have grown in recent decades. It’s not just bad for the planet - but for street safety too.

What’s even worse is that R1 service is only being run every 20 minutes.
That is a HORRENDOUS headway time for something supposed to replace ~5 minute LRT frequency.
It’s time to start asking - did the decision to scrap 117 buses from the fleet have something to do with it?
All the crisis comms in the world can’t fix a system that doesn’t work.
Imagine being reliant on transit because you work in a job where you don’t have the luxury of work from home and can’t afford to drive.
Today was horrendous for you. And who was there for you?
#ottnews
We support the idea of establishing a level playing field. But setting tariffs at 100% without any investigation or evidence is not about levelling the playing field - it’s about shutting out competition entirely. So incumbents can keep EV prices high and sell gas cars instead.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada will impose punitive tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles — copying a similar initiative that the U.S. is already pursuing. .
Transit systems across the country are facing significant operating deficits and the threat of a downward spiral is real. Not a single cent of the $30 billion dollars announced today is going towards solving this problem.
The Canada Public Transit Fund is the biggest investment in public transit Canada’s ever seen.
We’re building up subways, light rail, and bus routes across the country — getting people where they need to go, faster. It’s a game changer.
Maybe it’s time we started a conversation about a frequent flyers tax here in Canada.
When it comes to highly-polluting air travel, the planet can’t afford the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

David, can you tell me what percentage of city space is currently allocated exclusively to cars? Include roads and surface parking lots.
Nonsense from the National Post using the discredited argument that Canada doesn't have the density for high-speed rail. Population density between Toronto and Quebec City is higher than many existing high-speed rail corridors in Spain, Germany & Sweden.
#CdnPoli
@TransportAction
Just truly classic NIMBY talking points coming out one after the other. It feels like the dam has finally broken.
The Premier is finally telling everyone exactly what he thinks about his own Housing Affordability Task Force’s recommendations. And it’s not pretty.
Ford says it would be a parking "disaster" if fourplexes were allowed as-of-right across the province.
Ford says the strong mayor powers gives municipalities direct say over 4 units as of right.
#onpoli
Great piece from the Globe and Mail's editorial board calling on federal & provincial governments to not just support transit capital - but operations too, while calling attention on the need to address rising construction costs relative to peer countries.
This is the first time I’ve seen a column so successfully translate the nerdy discussions from transit twitter onto the pages of the
@TorontoStar
.
Bottom line, the TTC performs MUCH better than US equivalents because its frequent bus network, why cut it?
"You are losing money because there aren’t enough fare-paying customers to fill the coffers. You need more riders to generate more revenue.
Your solution is to cut services and increase fares, potentially losing more riders?
How does that make sense?"
This is the major red flag in the Premier's announcement. Passenger rail is sorely needed. But experimenting with hydrogen is the wrong move. People need proven rail technology that works.
Premier Smith says she’s interested in the use of hydrogen powered trains, which is something the proposed Calgary-Banff rail project has been exploring.

: Ottawa is being forced to renegotiate with Stellantis amid concerns the auto giant will scrap a new EV battery plant unless the federal and provincial governments match hefty subsidies given to Volkswagen, the Star has learned.
Is it actually reckless to increase investment in transit operations when “the buses are empty”?
The evidence indicates that investing in public transit operations is actually the most effective policy tool to increase ridership.
Here is a study on it:
We're in an affordability crisis. Families are feeling the pinch of inflation. We can't be reckless with spending on expensive promises like $250M on bike lanes, free transit and ⬆️ spending on transit by 20% when buses drive through our neighbourhoods almost empty.
VIA Rail has never recovered from the axe that the Mulroney Govt took to it. Its constrained from delivering better service because the track it runs on is privatized. Privatizing the delivery and operation of the largest expansion project in decades (HFR) is not the solution.
Public transit fare increases have consistently outpaced general rises in the consumer price index.
This is a result of public transit operating funding not keeping pace with service needs, leaving riders to pay more of the bill.
(Statistics Canada Table 18-10-0005-01)
BREAKING: To secure the massive new VW battery plant, Canada signed an unprecedented contract with the company to offer up to $13 billion in production subsidies over 10 years, effectively matching the U.S. incentives on offer

For everyone losing their minds about this - there is a distinction between fed funding for new highways (which the federal government does not do), and local roads in urban and rural areas (which the feds are funding).
This has been the case since 2016.
I’m gobsmacked.
A federal minister said they won’t invest in new roads or highways.
He doesn’t care that you’re stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. I do. We’re building roads and highways, with or without a cent from the feds.
In my latest piece in the Hill Times, I wrote about how the federal government was once a leader on public transit, and why it needs to find that courage once again if we are to meet the challenge posed by the climate crisis.

We need to stop confusing car dependency created by urban sprawl and a lack of investment in alternatives like transit as a love affair that Canadians have with cars. There is a reason why we see limited behavioural changes from the increased cost of gas.

Gatineau-connected Tramway on Wellington, pedestrian, active and public modes only. Connect it to a Tram down Bank street all the way to Lansdowne, car traffic replaced by public and active modes. Turn Lansdowne and Somerset east of Bank into pedestrian malls.
@augustAP12
Why are there 7 flights of stairs to get up to an entirely useless secondary underground level? Is this a subway or a nuclear fallout shelter?
The response from the city of Ottawa misses the point of the criticism entirely. The point is that road safety rests on building SAFE SYSTEMS rather than focusing on personal responsibility.
OC Transpo buses suffer from bad on-time performance. This makes it very difficult to rebuild ridership when riders can’t count on their bus to show up on time. One simple cost effective solution is more dedicated bus lanes.

Truly heartbreaking what the Ottawa LRT has done to confidence in transit service in our nation’s capital.
Once the choice of taking transit becomes a consistent gamble of whether or not it will get you where you need to go on time, a death spiral soon follows.
#OttPoli
If I were regularly relying on this service to get to work I would be pulling my hair out and considering buying a car. This city is facing a transit crisis that, at this rate, will take a generation to fix.
The city of Ottawa’s transit plan: 1) Cut service, 2) Raise fares, 3) Raid reserves and 4) Count on permanently reduced payments to RTG for a permanent service reduction on light rail.
The system is bleeding riders. This is what a death spiral looks like.
