Why are people being so mean about JK Rowling, the first woman to ever learn to write?
One day a little girl came to one of JK's signings and said she'd been inspired to try and do words and stuff herself. That girl's name...? JANE AUSTEN.
Makes you think.
On this
#NationalWritingDay
, remember:
- You are still a writer on the days you don't write anything
- You are still a writer when all your words look like garbage
- You are still a writer when you're not being read
Be kind to yourself. The words will come.
Sky's Edge will be back. This isn't an announcement, just a feeling in my bones. Still, today marks the end of something very special. Now we hold our breaths, because this moment will never come again.
Onwards.
If pursuing the arts ever starts to feel pointless or futile, I think of this picture from the Pericles rehearsal room.
Today things feel a little brighter than the day before, and some days that's enough. Onwards.

As I hang up my new pink cord dungarees next to my pink cord double breasted jacket I ask myself how *will* the world know I'm a professional theatre lesbian?
I think the fact that I've been snubbed for an Olivier (again) just because I haven't made any work eligible for an Olivier speaks volumes about the toxicity of our industry.

A love letter to Sheffield and the Park Hill Estate in an award-winning musical.

The fact that J K Rowling, a straight, cis white woman, is choosing Pride month, a pandemic and global Black Lives Matter protests to go on a multi-thread transphobic rant and hawk her new book just says it all really.
I would just like to live in a very beautiful and homely cabin in the woods with excellent WiFi and within walking distance of world class theatre and restaurants is that too much to ask?
I don't quite have the words for tonight. To see a capacity crowd in the Olivier leap to their feet for these stories and this company is a very special thing indeed. All I'll say is don't hang around to book.
#StandingAtTheSkysEdge
Missed this being publicly announced earlier...! I'm beyond thrilled to be taking up an official role
@crucibletheatre
. It's not just the best theatre in the world, it's also home. Over the moon about this one.
Something something would Ian Wright and Alan Shearer's show of solidarity happen in the arts, and if not, does this demonstrate how the world of professional sport still has a sense of working class consciousness that theatre lacks? I could do 500 words for the Stage no bother.
🌟 OPPORTUNITY 🌟
We’re on the hunt for a real person to star in our new ad campaign. We need a MAN 50+ years old with a huge smile and big, sparkly eyes. You don’t need to be a Specsavers customer to get involved, this is open to all!
Who wants my queer rom-com where two lesbians decide to propose to each other on February 29th and consistently accidentally foil each others plans?
They will be played by Kristen Stewart and Janelle Monáe and it will be wholesome but also extremely hot.
I really love finding out by Twitter announcement that a theatre hasn't programmed my show! It's just my favourite thing!! This industry is complete garbage!!!!
I reckon there's not a single new writing theatre in the UK that hasn't rejected one or more of my scripts at some point. Currently sat in
@NationalTheatre
rehearsal room, 8 days away from my Olivier debut. Worth sticking it out.
#ShareYourRejections
Still slightly dazed from yesterday's Olivier nominations. So hugely proud of every single person involved in our big brutalist beast of a show. Although a lot of these awards recognise individual excellence, this is for all of us. Vive
@crucibletheatre
, vive Sheffield. Ta ducks.
Exactly four years ago today, we started rehearsals for a little show called Standing at the Sky's Edge.
Today, we go into tech in the Olivier
@NationalTheatre
. It's been quite a ride.
My hot take: if you think it's implausible that two years in a row you take a show to Edinburgh, barely anyone shows up and you have a cry about it, you really don't know the fringe.
I love the National Theatre, I really, really do. They've been great to me and I'd chew my arm off to keep working there. But this morning's announcement really is dispiriting. Not a single female playwright. One (brilliant) female director.
WE'RE BACK BABY!!!
- STANDING AT THE SKY'S EDGE RETURNS CHRISTMAS 2022, THEN ON TO THE OLIVIER!!
- ROCK/PAPER/SCISSORS - THREE NEW PLAYS THAT RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY ACROSS ALL THREE THEATRES NEXT SUMMER!!!
- WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!!!!
Sheffield Theatres will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a "theatrical experiment" featuring a trilogy of plays running simultaneously across its three venues, with a single company of actors

Russell T Davies going back to Doctor Who can only mean one thing - someone's found a saved game of the Earth from 2005 and we're going for a full system reset. It's about time.
That feeling when you really just need them to FOLLOW THE FUCKING STAGE DIRECTIONS.
(This is from Annie Baker's Circle Mirror Transformation and I love it)
So apparently Gr*h*m L*n*h*n is getting his knickers in a twist about gender neutral toilets

Too many students are being sold a university education that won't get them a decent job at the end of it.

As an publicist, you should carry the following at all times:

• A slightly unhealthy need for control
No, YOU were just eating vegetable crisps under a tree and a leaf fell on you and you ate the leaf because you thought it was a stray crisp. WHAT A GREEDY FOOL YOU ARE.
SHEFFIELD IS ACTUALLY THE FIFTH LARGEST CITY IN THE UK BY POPULATION IT'S BIGGER THAN MANCHESTER ACTUALLY IT'S JUST THAT IT SPRAWLS IN MORE OF A RURAL WAY THAN AN URBAN ONE IT'S QUITE SELF CONTAINED BECAUSE OF THE HILLS THERE ARE SEVEN OF THEM LIKE IN ROME
Catastrophically bad take, this. Full sympathy for anyone struggling in this hugely competitive industry, but anyone suggesting they're not 'diverse enough' to work should be vigorously disabused of this idea immediately, not indulged. Do better, guys.
My sweetest, bravest boy, my Stranger, passed away this afternoon. He had a seizure two days ago and he fought so well, but in the end it was too much for his little heart. He made my life immeasurably better and I'm completely devastated. Sleep well, my handsome prince.
Hard to express just how much this means to me. I had such an incredible time making this show, and am beyond thrilled to be heading back to the Olivier (for more than 3 nights this time). Huge thanks to Rufus and all
@NationalTheatre
for seeing the universal in the local.
Eve Leigh is a phenomenal human and one of the greatest contemporary playwrights working in the UK (husband seems lovely too). They have nothing but my unconditional love and admiration.
Obviously, OBVIOUSLY always call the police if you suspect domestic violence. Fuck's sake.
It's no secret that I adore our
@SkysEdgeMusical
company with every fibre of my being. Particularly impressed with them for getting through last night's show (lights, who needs them?). Only two and a half weeks left
@NationalTheatre
and I'm already bereft.
And so it goes...
Two days and four performances left of
@SkysEdgeMusical
in the West End. Probably another soppy thread from me tomorrow. Massively grateful to our incredible cast, crew and everyone who got us here. If you came to see us, thank you so much. It means the world.
I'm so inordinately proud of our entire
@SkysEdgeMusical
team, who absolutely smashed it last night. Feeling a bit odd today in that post-opening melancholy as the adrenaline dies down, but hey, we're currently booking until August, so no farewells for a while...
We can't really be calling it "seat out to help out", can we? I suggest:
"Patronise the Arts so our economy restarts."
"Buy a ticket to tell recession to stick it."
"Take a chair so our industry isn't damaged beyond all hope of repair."
Needs work. We'll fix it in tech.
This isn't about tidying up language. This is, without exaggeration, a deliberate step towards banning trans people from any kind of public existence. This is evil, plain and simple, and must be opposed.
We have provided advice to the Minister for Women and Equalities on the definition of the protected characteristic of 'sex' in the Equality Act 2010.

Well, yesterday was just extraordinary. One cast, three sittings, nine audiences. Never experienced anything like it. What a remarkable group of humans we've put together. Forever grateful. Come see us, if you haven't already.

I think all shows should have to perform for a solid 24 hours at the very end of their run. I want to see David Tennant get through Macbeth twelve times. I want avant garde durational Mousetrap. I want to watch the cast of
@mincemeatlive
descend further and further into madness.
There is no one in this industry I love, respect or admire more than Rob Hastie. The most important professional relationship of my career. The kindest, most brilliant man in British theatre.
@crucibletheatre
have been so lucky to have him. A proper hero.
Artistic Director Robert Hastie announces his final season, as he steps down after eight years.
“It has been an honour to lead this wonderful group of theatres. There is nowhere like it and it’s been a joy to work at its heart.”
Not sure I find this very convincing. So it's the famous actors' fault because they hate female playwrights, not you? Did McAvoy really say "yeah, I'll do Cyrano, but not if a lady translates it"? Seems unlikely...
Trying to wrap my head around a world where apparently the D**ly M**l entertainment correspondent knows my show is cancelled before I do?? I mean fuck this for so many reasons, but particularly this bit of it.
The S*n is hot flaming garbage, it's terrible that JKR has suffered abuse, and her abuser deserves no sort of platform.
Certain people are now framing the argument like this: are you with JKR, or are you with abusive men and trans people. This is dangerous disingenuous bullshit.
I genuinely don't think I'm emotionally prepared for the final night of
#StandingAtTheSkysEdge
@crucibletheatre
, but I can't wait to get back up there. This show means the world to me, and feels more timely than ever.
"I see you. Do you hear me? I see you. You are seen."
Hey kids
*spins cap around backwards*
it's your auntie Chris here

just reminding you that whatever A level results you get we're all slaves to capitalism, meritocracy is a myth and there are no good Tories.
