In 1971, when my mother lost a pregnancy at 22 - 23 weeks, as she was bleeding out & in terrible pain, it was a Massachusetts judge without any medical training who decreed she wasn't "close enough to death" to qualify for a simple medical procedure to end her suffering.

My Ma taught for more than 35 years, nearly up to the day she finally lost the cancer battle. In her darker moments she wondered if she made an impact. At her wake, we had representatives of every class she taught, and my Dad, sister & I were comforting them. She made an impact.

One piece of advice for anyone facing this kind of nightmare - "bystander effect" is real. The more people around, the less likely anyone will intervene. However, single someone out & directly ask or instruct them to assist you, they likely will, and that can break the effect.

My Dad had to sell the house when Ma died and he went through bankruptcy. It's been 22 years and when I'm back visiting my sister, I'll sometimes just drive by the old house and lament that the new owners pulled out the rose bush Ma spent years cultivating.

Ma volunteered at a DV shelter. She assisted a lot of women trying to disappear from abusers. She'd send me addressed/stamped letters the women wrote to family back home & I'd mail them from various US locations while on business trips, so the post mark couldn't pinpoint them.

When my mother passed in 1997 from cancer, at age 58, there were women literally hitting on my father in the line at the wake. He waited 6 months before beginning to date again, and my sister & I were fine with it.

There were 2 "spinster" great-aunts via marriage in my family. One was tall & blonde, the other short & dark. They died when I was a kid, the tall one first. At the short aunt's funeral, there were strange people in the family pew. That's when Ma explained they weren't sisters.
