My mom was a single parent (RN) and finally got to move away after my brother and I graduated high school because of this. She finished her bachelor's while I was in elementary school and it was HARD. She doesn't have a PhD, just I can really imagine.

Imagine being a single parent as a postdoc. Not only can you not afford to relocate, but many cannot or should not physically relocate because of custody agreements, family/friend support systems, or school stability.

Early on, I delayed offers to automate my image analysis because I wanted to learn how things look and are analyzed by myself. Now that I know the basic biology, fixing bugs during automation is a piece of cake.
